-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I made this between January 2015 and August 2015, on and off. Sometimes I'd go weeks without working on it, and sometimes
I'd go weeks when all I seemed to do was work on it.
I made it on my mid-range laptop using, mainly, Cinema 4d r15 and Adobe After Effects.
It should be stressed that my work on this film was NOT primarily as modeller. Most of the models used in this film were resourced
for free from around the internet. You'd be amazed and some of the brilliant stuff put out there by some very skilled individuals. Credit for the stuff I used goes to:
Lorenzo Mangogna
Reif Dietmar
Herminio Nieves
3dregenerator
Remco van der Meer
www.theforce.net/scifi3d
RU-vid channel: rroobboo 999
If you're interested in 3D animation but have trouble getting hold of motion capture data, then I absolutely recommend going to: RU-vid channel: rroobboo 999
Though this film is based heavily on 20th Century Fox's "Alien" film franchise, you may notice that a lot of elements and characters come from various video games. This is because I chose assets that I simply liked the look/feel of rather than assets that were true to the franchise.
In terms of the sound, I used freely available sound effects from all over the internet. I also used Video Copilot and Magix Music Maker to further the soundscape. But the works of James Horner, Joe Henson and Alexis Smith are where the music mainly comes from.
Making this film was a lot of fun and a lot of stress in almost equal measure, which I think is what everyone who makes short films (animated or live-action) experiences. And long may it continue, I guess.

There were times when making this animation kinda kicked my ass. I made it on my laptop in my spare time from stuff I found for free on the internet. It's taken me about 8 months, on and off, to do. This is my only real forum for showing my work, so it'd be really cool if you wanted to leave me some feedback - whether it is positive or negative is okay so long as it is honest. Thank you.

+SoftCelAnimation Go to RU-vid channel rroobboo 999. That channel is fantastic for animators (i got the facehugger and egg from there). Also, scifi3d.com is a great resource for Alien models and other models from sci-fi franchises.
@DarkusMarque

+SoftCelAnimation I gave your Ripley animation a 'like'. That strobe lighting is really effective and reminded of exactly the kind of thing you find in an actual Alien film. I think, now, that I shoulda had a strobe lit scene in my short film too. Ha ha, too late. Damn.

Please keep up the good work Maybe you can go on go fund me or pateron [sic] and maybe make a lil' $$ on the side ( who knows maybe a lot of $$ ) Any hoo thanks for the video I thought it was pretty good.

+BigBadBampa This is some high praise, and it is much appreciated. Despite the elements of the short film I didn't quite nail, comments like this show me that there are plenty of elements I did well enough that I can build on and take forward into my next short film, and hopefullly make it better. Thanks for taking the time to watch, and for making the effort to comment.

I'm a motion picture effects coordinator...if you did this alone on a laptop, you're quite good! i would be looking into a refined script to produce and get busy on a totally serious movie project. yes, of course this has some issues, but I've seen directors waste a million bucks on far far worse looking projects with all the right stuff at their disposal. You have some talent, go make movies!
@DarkusMarque

I can't believe it's taken me this long to reply to such an awesome comment. This surely aint the first time I'm reading it . . . . a YEAR after you posted it! Yes, I made this alone on a laptop with no money. And I agree that this has lead to some short-falls in the quality and competence in some areas; but I honestly did the very best that I could. All the hard-work, mistakes, disappointments, stress, compromises etc. have been worth it though. Some of the comments and supports, and just general good-heartedness that I've encountered simply by posting the animation (as opposed to just saving to disc and putting in a drawer, which is what I normally do with my work) has surprised and uplifted me in ways I didn't expect. Gary Roberts, your comment is a perfect example of this, which is why I'm a little embarrassed that I seem to have ignored or not seen it. I don't know if you're ever gonna read this reply, but if you do, know that I sincerely thank you and, despite that lateness of my reply, I genuinely appreciate you taking the time to comment.

I think anyone who's a fan of the franchise will like what you've done here. I've read the comments; character development, dialog, etc. But I think you mention that in this instance you wanted to focus on the animation and atmosphere. That was certainly evident and included some nice touches, claustrophobic and panicked dimly-lit installation; excellent creature depiction and dynamics. I think you did a good job. Wish I had your self-discipline to do my writing !
@DarkusMarque
@DarkusMarque 8 лет назад
Thanks. I honestly appreciated this comment. And I'm glad you got something out of the short film. Yeah, this project was more a technical exercise than a storytelling one, but even so, I acknowledge all the flaws and ways I could have done this better. Which I realise is cool I guess because this is all part of 'the learning curve'. The next one will be better, and the one after the better still (at least this is what I keep telling myself!). As for your problem: lack of discipline? Write a little bit at a time; try not to think about tackling the whole thing, just focus on the immediate paragragh, or next couple of lines of dialogue (this is easier said than done, i know). That's my two-penneth.

Holy Smack Darkus, I stumbled across this piece while looking at other videos. It is amazing. What EternalRoman commented, is absolutely true. You have captured the tense, on the edge moments that the franchise has lost. Brilliant work.

You made me go and re-read EternalRoman's comment, and both of your comments are high praise indeed. Oh, and thanks for introducing me to the term "Holy Smack". I've never heard that term. Is it a thing now? Did you just make it up? Do you live in the 1960's Batman TV show? I think I would still 'like'/thumbs up your comment if you'd have written just "Holy Smack" and nothing else! Setting aside some issues with the voice acting and animations that are no doubt due to the unavoidable technical limitations of such a small-scale solo project, this was really well done. In fact, in many respects it was more evocative of the Alien franchise and feel than Prometheus, and in large part, more enjoyable. Well done! Whatever its origin, the "15 minutes later" worked for me - as a dark humor. Can imagine our heroes having waited ever less patiently. A joke on us audients also - denying us the expected formula at that point.

Anyone who actually takes the time to leave a negative, non-constructive message like a couple of folks have done here...well...you can probably imagine what they do with their time...nothing! Keep doing your thing. Look forward to seeing more work from you. Nice job!

+George Stephenson Of all the comments that have been left here, you're the first person to bring this subject up. And I really do appreciate the supportive tone of it. Thank you for this comment. In fairness, I did ask people to feel free to comment however they like so long as it was honest, so if they hated it then I can't complain if they write that. HOWEVER, I agree with you about some comments going beyond this and seeming to revel in "tearing down" for the fun/sake/spite of it. The first couple of times it happened you do feel a bit bad, but the constructive comments (even the ones that found the work very flawed) soon out-weighed the destructive comments. People have been far more understanding of my efforts and failings than I ever imagined (and YOUR comment is great evidence of this), so all the destructive comments I get now I can easily put in perspective. Cheers.

If you take this to 20th Century Fox, they might be seriously interested in using it. I think you should not use their logo without permission, though. I think you should be a visual effects coordinator or something. You've got a lot of talent, please do us all a favor and make more of this! I would love to see you work with some longer script, if you can dedicate the time to this project. This is better IMO than the Star Trek Axenar short fan film. Thanks for sharing this. This 12 minute clip was time on RU-vid that was not deducted from my lifespan.

+Scott Forbes I'm really pleased that you found watching this animation so enjoyable. You're right about the Fox logo. Replicating the Fox opening so closely was a naive mistake (a mistake that was brought home to me, loud and clear, early on by previous commenters), it's a mistake that I won't be making again. I'm currently working on Part 2 of this animation, but it won't be finished for AGES! Oh, and I'm glad that the run-time didn't deduct from your lifespan (Hahah, that part of your comment made me laugh - I really liked the way you worded it). Thanks for the comment, it was very encouraging.

Thank you. The continuation is on its way. I started it in February and . . . well, I don't know if you've ever had your ass kicked, but that's what part 2 is doing to me right now. I thought I'd have it ready by September. Nope. Gotta few more months to go, I reckon. Pray for me! Nah, in all seriousness, comments like yours (and others) give me a little boost of energy for the project when I'm deflated and fatigued. Thanks again.

I can only imagine how hard this is. Just by what I have seen, ALOT of hard work,hours and love went into this. Keep it up man I am eager for the continuation. Haha on a sidenote I am dreading the near future when I have to look into CGI/Animation for my crossover fan film I am trying to get into the Comic Con...It involves "The Thing." :)
@DarkusMarque
@DarkusMarque 7 лет назад
A "The Thing" crossover fan-film? Okay, you successfully piqued my interest. What's it crossed-over with? If the film is live-action with CGI elements then I wouldn't dread it. However, the reason that "The Thing" is so good is not about the special effects really, it was the general film-making technique. Do you really need CGI, or just want it? Nevertheless, I hope you post the finished film on RU-vid at some point, so everyone can watch it. I, for one, would really be interested.

Sorry haven't logged into youtube in awhile... I have to keep the script sort of hush-hush until I get the "blessing" from the 2(3 actually) studios..Technically I don't need the blessing as long as I don't make money off of it, but I would still like the support. I will definitely keep you in the loop..i just haven't built up a social media presence and need to learn a bit more. I do handle Fate magazine's Facebook site, so that has helped as I am posting articles for them The CGI is more for background effects/title,etc..I am trying to duplicate what Carpenter did with his movie of sorts(puppets/animatronics/lighting/etc)...I want to create the psychological aspect..sadly i won't be able to come close..but i will create alot of anxiety and some "woh" moments from the cross-over aspect. I wish i could tell you the whole plot but until i get a handle on it..i can't say much more..I can say this though...there will be a facehugger(a 3rd aspect of the crossover) and other "species" of extraterrestrial DNA/samples on hand...It perfectly syncs with a series of movies and shows that have come out in the last 10 years so i am pretty darn excited.If you want..feel free to drop me an email and i will chat a bit more in a closed setting. Just put The Thing fan-film in the subject line since this email is very particular and filters everything :) jamieleeanderson@hushmail.com Talk to you later

Your enthusiasm and positivity for your project really comes through, and that is gonna come in really handy during the times when the project hits a rough patch (I'm not being negative - NO project is ever smooth sailing!). I honestly hope your plans come to fruition. It's kinda exciting to hear from someone in a similar position to myself speak with such energy about their film-making, or prospective film-making. Your wish to use puppets and animatronics sounds great. From one aspiring film-maker to another: I'm rooting for you, Jamie!

Just saw this. I can say for a fan made film and the resources you had, this was excellent. Very, very good. Now, you need to go ahead and do a kickstarter for a bigger budget, and have try outs for more voice actors because I can almost bet that you'd make an even greater film.
@DarkusMarque
@DarkusMarque 6 лет назад
Thank you. Yeah, the confidence gained by doing this animation, even with all its faults, inspires me to dream of maybe one day embarking on some kind of project (Kickstarted, or otherwise) that puts greater resources at me disposal. The fact that you can see beyond this film and what could possibly be achieved with a larger budget and additional staff leads to me to think others might too. So you never know: there may come a time when I get to put the potential to the test and see what I'm really made of.

Well done, very good effort I enjoyed the set up and felt like Aliens/Predator in the banter - I hope you do a bonus episode wher we see how the missing 15 minutes went... Perhaps you cut to this to show a reveal later on in the movie - it could show some mischief, bad decision making or plain old cowardice that gets them split up? Cant wait to see the next one.

+Roystone Szweda Thank you for this comment, it was like a written pat on the back. Just begun the long process of creating Part 2 (of what will be a three-part "saga"). I'm not altogether sure how it's gonna turn out, but I'm kinda looking forward to it too!

+Zackthetimelord Productions Much appreciated. I'm genuinely glad you liked it. The 20th Century Fox ident was an after-thought, to be honest, and more tricky to do than I thought it would be. It's not perfect, but it turned out to be one of my favourite parts of the project - and doing it gave me a new-found respect for that music too.
@DarkusMarque
@DarkusMarque 9 лет назад
+YoshiTwi BonnieHD It was mostly done in Cinema 4D. 1: I found a basic model of the Fox logo online. 2: I remade it to make it more like what I wanted. 3: I used Greyscale Gorilla's City Kit for the background, as well as an image of clouds and mountains I liked. 4: Still in Cinema 4D, I added the "gold" material and beams of light. 5: Watched the real Fox ident to copy the camera move closely. 6: Rendered it as PNGs and imported it into After Effects. 7: Added Lens Flares from Video Copilot. And added colour correction, text etc.
