I freaking loved this movie! Great to have a new Alien movie in 2024 that captures the tone of the first two and blends with the rest of the franchise. Legacy sequels are hard and they absolutely nailed it.
This is a remake of the original for the people in their 20s-30s, for all other folks this is at best very questionable flick, don't know why Scott did agreed to mess with his masterpiece, another example here that money can buy anything even your mother...
Saw it in Dolby Cinema last night and as an OG fan that saw Alien and Aliens in their original theatrical runs as well as being a fan of Prometheus...this was an incredibly bad ass throwback styled instant classic !! 9/10 for me !!
New to the channel. I saw Alien Romulus yesterday, and my thoughts are that I need to rewarch it soon to fully decide how I feel about this movie. I liked that the director brought elements back from alien and aliens, and the technology did look and feel like it belonged between the worlds of those two movies. The problem for me was that I could not understand what the characters were saying to each other at the beginning of the film primarily because they spoke British English. Not that I have issues with it, because production wise the English have had a major role in the production of the original Alien films, but I just couldn't understand what they were saying to each other to get where the story was headed. When I rewatch this movie, maybe the issue will resolve itself now that I know where the story is going, and maybe the other bigger issue I had with the final act will make more sense. It was good, I just wasn't expecting to get Prometheus shoved so late into the movie. Liked the review, looking forward to seeing more.
Welcome. The dialogue was quite weak and never important, so I'd say you don't miss out on much if you don't hear words. IDK if any theaters do captioned dialogue showings, but I know some people love it while others hate it.
Dang fun summer popcorn flick. Not as good as first two films, and pays a bit too much homage to past films, but still worth it. Support your local theater and get out of the heat and have fun.
This movie is a master class on how to revive a franchise while making a brilliant sequel! First off, I’m a fanboy of the first two films… I actually saw the second movie “Aliens” in theaters. Also, coincidentally, I just finished playing the video game alien isolation last month without even knowing that this movie was made & soon to be released. I say all this because I had high hopes when I learned that this movie was made and coming to theatres. Well, I just finished watching the movie and I can tell you that it fulfilled and surpassed all my expectations! This movie is freaking awesome! I enjoyed every second except for the fan service (Spoiler alert *** CGI legacy character ***) It was unfortunate and necessary, and definitely a misstep. Other than that the world building of this alien film was faithful and stunningly beautiful plus it has the craziest surprise 3rd act that I was not expecting at all! The ensemble cast was top notch just like the original movie, especially the female lead and her “surrogate” brother. The movie was scary AF and at several times had me on the edge of my seat! It also has the most stunning imaginative action sequence that I’ve ever seen in the franchise! In my opinion, this is the only worthy sequel to the Alien franchise since the second film “Aliens.” 9 out of 10! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Oh and Please take my money, because I can’t wait to see the sequels to Romulus‼️😍 PS… can’t wait to watch this again next week!

I don't get why so many people say they enjoyed this movie, have they watched the same thing that I've watched?? So many times during the movie, I said to myself "this is so f****** stupid." I understand you'll have super fans protecting the movie because they want to protect franchise. I am a super fan of the first two alien movies, and I also think Alien 3 is great, Alien Romulus however, it's beautiful, but literally everything else is really bad it's really dumb, it's just a dumb Movie. I don't consider this cannon. It's just another alternative version/idea that I have no interest in. Thanks, Fede, for your attempt, but there's a lot here that you just don't get either..
I love your review. Spot on. I felt the same way. I think this movie is a fantastic fit within the franchise. And, I think history will look back and see this one as a classic part of the franchise!
As a massive fan of this franchise, I think it's the best since Aliens and about as good as Aliens with Alien being the GOAT. Gotta say I disagree about it not being scary or a little original. That third act was terrifying.
I thought the film was good up until the midpoint but I just watched Aliens after seeing this and now Aliens doesn't make any sense. Ripley is found 57 years after the events of the first film yet Romulus is 20 years later. Rooke explains that they've already found Ripley and the flight log (that's how they know about the alien she blew out of the airlock) but in Aliens Burk tells Ripley they just went through the log which collaborates some of her story, 57 years after the events of the first film.
Going to see it tomorrow! Considering Aliens is one of my favourite movies ever I can't wait. The last couple I wasn't as much of a fan of because they just didn't feel like an alien movie. From everything I've seen and heard so far, this seems to be more in line with the first two so can't wait!
It should been you and Johnny reviewing this one Vic ,or you should got Scott Jones dusted off for this review too .But it does look bad as Alien movie ,it just seems that on non review spots on RU-vid .They put a flamethrower to it ,and this movies ties all the other movies from series ,and it not getting a thumbs down .Then maybe Disney finally hit the ball park on this one .And I can still remember when you and Jones reviewed "Prometheus " .Which I think is great origin movie from the Alien movies .
Personally I haven't really had an issue with any de-aging that has been done. Sometimes it's a bit detectable but overall I don't care; it's still quite passable and never distracting to me. The movie itself was okay, but relatively predictable and typical Alien movie. Certainly nothing bad compared to some previous movies; probably sits as like #4 or #5 in an Alien movie ranking. I think I liked Prometheus a lot better than this, and the original two are kind of considered sacred classics to fans so those have to be above it. On more of an absolute scale, I'd say 7/10 for Sci-Fi fans, 7.5/10 specifically for Alien series fans, and 4-5/10 (don't watch unless it's to placate a sci-fi fan) for those who are not sci-fi fans or are not light-horror fans. My biggest criticism is that there felt like there was too much padding/bloat, and not enough mystery/intrigue except a tiny bit around the end. Like Prometheus had a lot of build-up but it was build-up "full" of mystery, drama, and intrigue. In this movie it just felt like basic introductory scenes that over-stayed it's welcome by a good margin. There's nothing alien in the movie until 40 minutes deep! (hopefully not a major spoiler for anyone) I never found the Alien movies to be horror (like scary, I guess), but they still had a lot of intrigue which can go a long way for entertainment.
I think Alvarez did a really fantastic job bringing the horror element back, but I still feel a little weird about the usage of Ian Holm in the movie, I feel like they could have done something different. Otherwise the movie definitely punched me in the face and knocked half a star off when they used that one line out of nowhere and stopped even stopped the movie to use it and it almost really made no sense why it was used outside of it just being a call back. 3 and half stars for me or a 7.5, right in line with you Vic.
Hi Vic great review,I saw the film last night.Built upto it by watching Alien -Alien Resurrection, I wasn't disappointed . Like many say not as good as Alien or Aliens but sits well with 3 and Resurrection. Was surprised to get a de aged Ian Holm , but wasn't he basically just a head by the end of Alien?
Awesome. Going to see it tomorrow. Aliens is my favorite film, so I’m glad it seems to take place near this time. Really like that they go back to the OG era similar to Rogue One in SW 🤘
Too low! Too low! Too low! Your score I mean. Ha ha, anyways, I absolutely loved this movie. I thought that they did a great blend of Alien horror, mixed with Aliens action, while still acknowledging the prequel movies. The only low points I’d give it are the sometimes questionable CGI version of Rook, plus the fact that it was pretty obvious who was going to survive from the get go. Otherwise, it’s a fantastic sequel that fits right in with the other movies. I want more.
Was totally going to skip this cause i'm tired of rehashes, and the constant revisiting to this franchise. Alien has been guilty on all counts! But you know what? I like Vic's taste in film, and his review at least will get me to give it a try.....on a cheap Tuesday at Cineplex :p LOL.
Did anyone else have that issue of not being able to understand what the characters were saying, or was it just me or my theater I saw it in? I'm genuinely curious.
Great review... I'm giving it the same score too :) I think the high notes are super high, but the lows are super low too. Great mood but yeah, after 7+ movies, it's hard to get surprised by Alien. Some scenes are sooo good but for me, some of the ending and some ----- from your spoiler part review---- didnt land very well. I looooooove some of the small touch taken directly from Alien: Isolation (one of my fav game ever).
Nothing in the film makes sense. Nostromo wreckage was vaporized because of the factory holding mineral ore. Big chap alien doesn't produce face huggers. The Droid is a dead actor that looks like shit. The woman injecting herself with a substance she doesn't know makes 0 sense. The ending is Ridley Scott forcing the black goo to retcon the Queen for the third time. The good is the xenos and acting. The rest is all aesthetics made to be the force awakens of the Alien franchise
This is a movie hampered by its own hype. No, the characters aren't as deep and layered as the original films. Yes, the movie does fall back on labored fan service and nostalgia. If you're an Alien fan and you just want a batsh1t insane, brutal AF space-thriller, you're in for a treat. Just know that things go off the rails in the climax and let yourself go with it. It's a good movie.
Not much chance of there being a break from the Alien universe, seeing as Noah Hawley's "Alien: Earth" TV show is on the horizon for 2025. Personally, I'm more intrigued at the prospect of something slower-paced with less callbacks to other entries in the franchise.
I really, really wanted to, but I just didn't love Alien Romulus. The first two acts were tense and tight and full of body-horror and terror. Act 3 was written by a committee. It fizzled badly, in my opinion.
You know why I never score a movie because if I ever criticize something that is unique why I don't do it myself people like to criticize but my question is if you don't like it why you watch it don't watch it and make one yourself get the hundreds of millions of dollars that he needs get the studies and cinematography get everything that you need to make a movie and do it yourself I love the movie I enjoyed it it was great I really loved it scared the shit out of me but me rating a movie nah man it requires a lot of work and I know all of us are keyboard Warriors
I smell (studio=Disney) messing with the script and direction... It happend to Alien 3 and probably this movie also. I appreciate the practical effects, the environments, music and feel. That does not make a good movie. Some good performances like the Android ok, but to copy scenes and dialogue? That's a red flag for me. Having an actor using the line that Ripley got famous for, is lazy and stupid. It would be if another actor than Arnold in [The Terminator] using the line (I'll be back) That line belongs to him! Why did Alien Romulus not make its own quotes ? Afraid to stand on its own two feet ?
LEast it's a tribute.. But, I wish they would stop trying to recreate Ellen Ripley in EVERY movie... but oh well. RIP Bill Paxton and the Blomkamp Aliens with Kyle Resse.. *ahem* Michael Biehn.
Too many nods to the old movies shoehorned in, and it cheapens the experience. When you’re watching a movie and you’re conscious of being manipulated, it leaves a bad taste.
The last few Alien films have been complete utter ass, stupid characters, stupid writing... we deserve better. It's a travesty, honestly. Ripley and everyone in Alien weren't absolute god damn morons every 4 seconds like in Prometheus and Covenant etc. Ahem anyway sorry.
No. There are too many member berries. Its fan service written by a 13 year old fan boy. The characters are forgettable. The dialogue and the acting is flat and very unoriginal at times.
wasnt very good lol. You guys are shilling this trash hard. That line by the android as he kills the alien was so cringe inducing. Absolute trash movie.
Alien is my favorite movie. I absolutely HATED this movie. I will never, ever watch this again-I could not WAIT for it to be over. I was bored out of my MIND. The action is terribly directed, it can’t even begin to compare to Alien and Aliens-those are GOOD MOVIES. This is not a good movie-I don’t care how many cool props and callbacks they made! The movie SUCKS.
