Chariot of the Gods actually worked perfectly with the spores and Neomorph. It's the twist my players weren't expecting and it kept them on their toes a lot more to fight a variant of the Xeno they weren't as familiar with. Smart move on Free League's part imo!

I never hear of the Aliens rpg game. I grew up when aliens first came out and love those movies and the second movie being my favorite with the colonial marines. What a great review and much information you put into your video to help a new players to the game. When I was a kid I only played D&D and Gamma World. I’ll be checking out this game as well now.

Just finished Chariots and had fun. I hope these adventures don't get too deep into Scotts' "Engineers created humanity" thing. The Alien universe is far scarier with unknowns.

I'm a big fan of buying the pdf along with the physical product. That way I can just print up those pre-gen character sheets for use. Or the maps of the ship. Then the players and I are free to doodle to our hearts delight.

Free League actually has downloadable PDFs for characters, sheets, and maps right on their website. They come in the original versions and printer-friendly versions as well! They haven't included the Destroyer of Worlds maps yet, but hopefully they will add them.

I think one fun way to fix the "you've been infected by random spores and die :D" would be to give warning to your players that something on the ship is infectious and give hazmat suits. Kinda turns the spores from a gotcha to an environmental threat that the players have to keep in mind. Oh and swap abominations with the explodey guys that seems fun.

I think featuring neomorphs is smart, its peoples first experience and they're going to expect xenos. not very scary if they know what to expect.

I just got into running this for a couple groups of players. Hope's Last Day went well, so I also picked up the other adventures and am really looking forward to Destroyer of Worlds which as a story, I think is even better than Aliens. I agree it's clear from the outset that the module was created by someone with a lot of serious world writing experience and, to me, it's the most realistically and richly grounded Alien setting I've seen. I don't have quite the same problems with Prometheus and Covenant as lots of other fans, but would also agree the Abominations are lame. They would probably be fine if they stopped at Stage III and maintained enough agency to make consciously malicious decisions. That's a space disease you need to be afraid of. As is, they need more dimensions to be scary. My one criticism I had of the Hope's Last Day materials was about the map. It's really unclear which hallways are open at which levels, and where you need to go to get between sections of the complex. I just made it up as we went, but some of the halls are open on the second floor and look like sealed on the first. I'm not sure why, and if that is the case I'm not sure why anyone would build something like that. I also didn't like that every way up and down was listed as a ladder access when Hadley's Hope clearly had several major staircases. I just made them stairs and it played but I'm hoping the DOW maps are a little clearer.

Also, we use Tabletop Simulator for pandemic gaming and if anyone is looking to run this online, there is an excellent custom table built on the Workshop for each module with props, interactive character sheets, music and sound effects. The Hope's Last Day one even had private GM maps with all the items and enemies placed according to the text. Really streamlined my process and got my players into the mood and aesthetic. If you can't play in person, at least you can play in highly functional style.

I love the Alien world and all, but I'm wondering how far this RPG can expand and diversify itself from the movie franchise. It's hard to build a game of terror and suspense when you already know what is making that sound in the air ducts. I watched a few games of both campaigns and when you hear about a colony having issues and there is no comms and you must investigate... There's no surprise about the alien infestation and the possibility of a corporate traitor in your group. So I'm looking forward to seeing something beyond the typical movie troupes.

Agreed. I think the only logical next step, if staying within canon, is... battling against and alongside the Engineers!

Fair point. What I did/do is just kind of flesh out the world. Yes, everybody already knows about xenos. So don’t lean on Xenos. Have it be other humans more often then not. Mysterious murders and disappearances? All signs point to xeno? It’s just a space serial killer! Group of “company men” seem to put profit above morals to acquire xeno material? Have them be the good guys! There’s a point where your players just have to have suspension of disbelief and roll with the punches. Otherwise every DnD game you ever play it’s gonna be like “Lemme guess. Evil wizard? Needs a crystal to cement his power? Ragtag adventurers save the princess/village and mow down countless orcs and what not on the way while trying to loot and lvl? Most DND tropes are played out, so you just gotta think your way around them so the games don’t get stale.

I'm gearing towards the lovecraftian having my players fight a cult (in the form of a major company). The black goo (Draconis Strain) is discovered to originally be named Shub-Niggurath and is in fact not a substamce per se, but a deity.

I watched your Alien RPG review (heck knows how many times) and I've decided it's an RPG that I definitely want to get into (mainly because it expands the Universe). Then you hit with this (and amazingly this also looks really solid), I can't wait to see your review of the Colonial Marines Operations Manual says (good or bad).

@@DaveThaumavore YEAH! I really hope it offers new artwork and expands the Xenomorphs. Whilst I like Alien more than Aliens I still LOVE the universe. I could easily get lost in that lore.

Leaving the character building out of the starter set is disappointing, but perhaps understandable as they want to sell the big hardcover. I own both, but still I'd love to have all the non-fluff stuff in a compact form.

one thing I didn’t like about Alien RPG that the attack move from Alien is so unbalanced. Those attack moves basically unable to dodge or counter.

I've been thinking about this game for a while and will probably get it based on this review. The modularity of the mandatory and optional events makes me think it would be pretty easy to create entirely new scenarios using the same maps. Does that seem legit, or are there a lot of story elements built into the room descriptions as well?

It's extremely modular. You can plug and play anything you want. In fact, I'd find it hard to run the scenarios exactly as they are in the book without a bit of improvisation and substitution.

Great review as always, Dave. A lot of my friends seem very interested in this Free League's ALIEN RPG and its step brother MOTHERSHIP. But Dave, i have a question, what do you think of Mutant Year Zero RPG? I'm planning to get that but what's your opinion about it?

Howdy! Love your review. I was wondering where you got the full scale artwork without text at 11:00; I can't seem to find it for the life of me, just what's in the book with the text and such. If anyone else has seen it, it'd be greatly appreciated!

I think I just clicked on the PDF page, which still had layers, and pasted the image into Photoshop, then exported it. It’s been a while though. Can’t imagine I did it any other way though.

Thanks for the response @DaveThaumavore! I didn't have photoshop so I ended up converting the PDF to word, editing the layers there, then changing it back to a PDF to display two pages at once; got the full picture with just a small line in the middle. Also, I actually won the Alien RPG box set from your contest some time ago. I managed to break it out for a new group and they loved it; it was one of my favorite RPG experiences ever. I'm planning on running DoW and your review convinced me to get Heart of Darkness. Thanks again for being one of the best RPG folks out there.

You would meet with various levels of success attempting each of these that you listed. The Alien RPG is tailored for a specific horror experience so you’d have to tweak rules in most cases here.

Ran Chariots last weekend. Loved it but I replaced the threats w/ facehuggers instead of spoors (because undetectable and unavoidable death is bullshit) and traditional xenomorphs Went great! Loved Prometheus but let's be real... people want their Alien fix, not Neomorphs. Not for the first session at least

Great review. I love Free League's stuff (Symbaroum, The One Ring etc. ) and as a huge fan of Alien, Alien Isolation and Aliens I was very interested in this RPG, but I think I will pass as I really hate the way the Alien franchise has gone (spores/black goo/neomorphs/abominations etc.). It's not Free League's fault but the inclusion of those rather than just the classic xenomorph castes from the first two films is a big negative for me. I do take your point that a GM should be able to choose, I just wish the other stuff wasn't even there. Really appreciate your review.

The 'Space Zombies' in Prometheus were terrible and ruined the movie. The Chariot of the Gods scenario isn't great, for the reasons you highlighted and were spot on with. Your assessment, as usual, was superb in it's detailing. Keep up the great work of increasing awareness of our hobby.
