Also Known As: Kampf im Wilden Westen - Collection 1
Filming Locations: Battleford, Saskatchewan, Canada
Storyline:
Based on an actual event, this is the tragic story of Saskatchewan fugitive Almighty Voice (Gordon Tootoosis), a Cree Indian who isarrested for stealing government livestock out of desperate hunger.
Reviews:
"ALIEN THUNDER is based on the true story of Almighty Voice, a Cree Indian fugitive that eluded the Mounties for over a year. Donald Sutherland plays Mounty Dan Candy who is obsessed with "getting his man". The film is alternately sympathetic towards the white police officers and the Native Americans. Two of the First Nation stars are Oscar nominated Chief Dan George who plays Sounding Sky and, in his screen debut, Gordon Tootoosis in the title role. It is Donald Sutherland who steals the show with his role as the tall tale telling, comforting, determined N.W.M.P.. The film is recommended not for its plot, which wears a bit thin, but for it's vivid capturing of early Canadian pioneer life and Northern Cree culture." Written by ram-30 on IMDb.com
"Donald Sutherland plays Mountie Dan Candy as if the character he knew he was in a movie and kept pushing it to be an action/adventure film, or a revenge movie, or a revisionist Western with a hero who could make a difference - but he's not. He's in an historical docudrama about a series of related domestic tragedies. Which means that the outcome is predetermined, and after insisting he has some power to effect matters for the better, he is left with the Indians to witness the end unfold.
This is the clue to the real strength of the film, which many would find its greatest fault. It is indeed slow, in order to accommodate an elegiac visual style. Tone and effect - essentially of sorrow, and of powerlessness over the historic inevitability of it all - form the real substance of the movie.
It's understandable that such is not to the taste of many audiences. But the film makers do deserve credit for attempting to approach their material in this fashion, rather than opt for something more profitably "exciting." That said, it must be admitted that a large scale production like this is operating on what appears to be a crash budget, and that doesn't help. It certainly didn't help in the preservation of the film, the available print on DVD is pretty bad. But occasionally the cinematography rises to the majesty that the script and director are calling for it, and eerie and beautiful moments pop up in the film, often when you least expect it.
Not really a success, but by no means simply a failure." Written by winner55 on IMDb.com

I saw this movie in a theatre when I was a teenager. I thought it was awesome and it was later the name was changed to Dan Candy's Law. I didn't see the reason for that. Alien Thunder was an appropriate name.... I felt. I always remembered it as Alien Thunder. Thank you very much for the upload.

Yes, June 20, 2024, was a heartbreaking day when Donald Sutherland passed. I've been watching all of his films ,TV shows, and interviews that he was in or gave every day since he died. Some films I'd see before but others like this I'd never heard of, but thank heaven's for algorithms. This film popped up this morning. Today is a rainy and chilly Saturday morning on the Canada Day long weekend 2024! I am so grateful to be making burgers for breakfast and NOT be soaked with all this rain at some campground with my young kids. Nope, I'm able to make my breakfast burger and jump back into bed dry and am warm indoors and able to tuck into this film, and Dr. Bethune film after. Whilst my adult children cope with camping with the grandchildren or at the cottage dealing with this rainy long weekend. Bwahahaha! I love getting older! My condolences go out to Donald's family and especially Kiefer as they deal with this loss. Rest in peace and love forever Donald Sutherland, aka Hawkeye, aka Odd Ball, aka Dr.Bethune and so many more iconic characters in fabulous films you had been in! Thanks to whomever uploaded this film, I'm truly grateful to get to watch another movie with our beloved great Canadian Donald Sutherland, aka President Snow! 🕊❤️🇨🇦🎞💫🙏🏼

Il est décédé il y a plusieurs années. Très bon acteur et il parlait de son experience avec Donald Sutherland. Très bonne entrevue. J'ai apprecier et aimée son commentaire. I have been hoping to see this movie for about 50 years! Thanks so much for uploading it. My grandparents used to have a farm in the Wakaw area of Saskatchewan. When I was a kid, my grandma drove me out to look at a set that was built for this movie. It was near Duck Lake, Saskatchewan. I recall being fascinated by the idea that people would actually build a set to make things look as they did in the past. I asked my grandma to take me back there a few months later so that I could look at it again but it had already been torn down. I was devastated. She told me that maybe I could see the movie one day and I would see the set in that film. I am looking forward to doing just that. Thanks again!

I will read other comments in a moment. First thoughts, loved the Movie as I had not seen this before now! Powerful is an Understatement in my humble opinion, a true gem of film making. Last thought the moral of the story, All these deaths over A cow to save People from starving to Death and the end result is many more died! I do not know if this is based on fact, the Film, however it does send a message, POWERFUL. John, Australia.

Apparently it is based on a true story. Claude Fournier, a Québec film producer, made this movie. Gordon Tootoosis plays Almithy Voice (a canadian actor). I liked that actor and this was is very first movie and later on worked on t.v. shows. Sadly, Gordon Tootosis died a few years ago. I agree, a whole mess over a cow Almithy Voice killed and it was THEIR HERD. And sure it was from Dear Queen Victoria (no direspect for the Queen). But still, that herd was for them. Very sad indeed that a whole lot of people were killed over a cow to feed a familly in need. Winters are brutal here in Canada. Espiacelly then stuck in reservation.

By Lee Pfeiffer While at the pinnacle of his success as a leading man, coming off of major starring roles in M*A*S*H, Kelly's Heroes and Don't Look Now, Donald Sutherland returned to his native Canada to film Alien Thunder (aka Dan Candy's Law). The story, loosely based on a true historical incident, finds Sutherland as Dan Candy, a stalwart Canadian Mountie, who patrols the wild Saskatchewan wilderness areas in the 1880s. There is a famine plaguing the area and the hardest hit are the local Indian tribes. One brave, Almighty Voice (Gordon Tootoosis) is frustrated at having to wait for meager rations from Canadian authorities while his family starves before his eyes. He slaughters a government-owned cow, an action that sets off a major legal problem. Candy and his partner are assigned to arrest Almighty Voice, who fears he will be hanged. Almighty Voice flees into the wilderness and in a confrontation with Candy's partner, shoots the Mountie dead. Candy becomes obsessed with revenge and the film takes on elements of The Searchers, as he engages in a relentless search for the fugitive. Almighty Voice not only has to avoid capture, but he must deal with the harsh elements and care for his wife and newborn child, who are with him. Almighty Voice and Candy's mano-a-mano grudge match extends over many miles and many months, which each man scoring victories and suffering losses. Almighty Voice turns the tables and attacks Candy's domain, burning his cabin to the ground. As the hunt continues, Candy develops a grudging respect for the man he is determined to bring to justice. He also objects when his strutting, martinet superior officer employs a virtual army, including field artillery, to hunt down Almighty Voice. The film is directed and photographed by Claude Fournier, and his measured style and leisurely pace may turn off some viewers weaned on contemporary action films. In fact, Alien Thunder is more a character study than an actual adventure, although the final sequence - a battle between the authorities and Almighty Voice and his few allies- is excitingly staged and has moments of grandeur that belie the film's somewhat modest budget. Sutherland gives a fine performance as an everyday man who finds himself on an extraordinary quest for vengeance. He makes for a most vulnerable hero, making misjudgments and mistakes throughout his mission. Most of the supporting cast are little-known actors with the exception of always-watchable old pros Chief Dan George and Kevin McCarthy.

All that to kill an Indian who butchered a cow so they didn't starve. Here I thought Americans treated the native population horribly. I don't know why white people have such hate for native peoples all over the world. My husband is white so I know not most are hateful. But I know that Donald Sutherland did an excellent job of making me hate his character who turned out to be a true SOB. Also there was a lot of using the Lord's name in vain, in fact so much that I actually skipped quite a lot of Dan Donald Sutherland's character in the beginning. But I was rooting for the indigenous tribe anyway.

The children were killed, By the State. You have strange notions of 'rescue'. And no. The balance of your comment shows you are informed by the popular narrative, not factual account as it emerged by eye witnesses. Asking why anybody says what they say, is a sign of intelligence, Samuel. So assuming intelligence on your side, kindly, go inform yourself of what emerged in court proceedings, and swept under the carpet. It was yet another instance of Federal Brutality, and retrofitted political lies afterward to assuage a dumb and ignorant population.

I don't think I've seen anything like that since the Black Robe movie. If there's any more gems like this hidden out there somewhere, perhaps Grjngo can find them. In the meantime, I'm quite amazed.

Most (white) Canadians grew up thinking the RCMP was early Canada at or near its finest. A better way to win the west. The various events of the past 20 years, not just events but also simple re-readings of the basic facts, have absolutely savaged that history for whatever it ever was worth. Now I discover this movie, filmed in 1974. Still can't get over how vastly more relevant it is today.

Donald Southerland is always good whether he plays a good or bad character. Here he plays evil well, the evil of the police mentality.

What's the man's name that plays sounding sky, He also played in Josey Wales movie ? By the time he was in Josey Wales he hadn't aged that much , he had some but not much, this movie was made in the 1970s Josey Wales was about 25 years later, not sure what year but just saying he looked a little weathered in both movies he was in Kung Fu episode with David carradine, playing a old Indian that come to town to die, under the big tree center of town ! He got a certain age and then didn't age any more or not much ! Wanted to know his name Thanks !

@@andrear.4864 Thanks for the information I really appreciate it, always liked him great actor , plus if Clint Eastwood had you in his movies you know you were the real deal ,! His skin had a kinda leather look, like Charles Bronson did , they both aged to a point and 25 yrs later they almost still looked the same, that's not a very good description but i tried, both very good actors ! Westerns are my favorites so I've seen them both in lots of movie films, for a while didn't think anyone was gonna tell me , thanks again !

American Indians treated other Indians bad. They also treated the white man bad. Resettlement is always about Conquest. No Nation has NOT experienced it. Read some books... if you can find any.

@@patricia8078 so true. I was living in Winnipeg from 1985 to 1991. And the native there are not that welcome and are badly treated. So true that too many younger and older women are missing and presumed dead and it seems so clear that no one cares. It truly is frustrating to see that no one is willing to do anything about it.

Whose got big balls! Whose got the biggest balls of all. Whole militia with cannons for three native trapped in small trees seems a bit overkill to me. Cowards fight this way. Just what is the penalty for trying to feed your family on reservations. Sick society who invaded native land. Now call it their own. Good acting :( very sad topic.

Just as a reminder, now that our Indigenous Scholars are rewriting a truer version of history, than what was written as, notes, flashbacks of events of tired Soldiers, that, "Almighty Voice" was killed, No, he was not, nor his Body ever found in the wooded area where he was surrounded by a Battalion of Soldiers, just to find one Indian, age 24. He was seen 10 years later after the shootout [where he supposedly was killed] at a Sundance in a nearby Reserve. That area has many ways in which people can get lost, even local Natives of the Area have difficulty of the land, looks the same, mile after mile. Almighty Voice, was killing their own cow, a Dry Cow, as the Actor who played Almighty Voice, told me. He had a mystique about him, a "Cree Thing." Like Bin Ladin, his body was never found, [oh yea, a Boy of 16 was killed running to his Mom], Obama said, he's buried at Sea. No public eye was to ever see Bin Ladin. Americans are fools, making people believe in their Agenda. US Lists at 11th place of places where Good Government Rules, Canada 7th.
