“In 1820, the great Northern War Chief Hongi Hika departed New Zealand for England. On his return, he brought with him the word of God and hundreds of muskets. Things would never be the same again …”
… so begins the video for Alien Weaponry’s new single, ‘Kai Tangata’.
The title literally translates to ‘Eat People’; and refers to the ancient Māori tradition of eating the flesh of their enemies after battle in order to insult them. It is also an ancient term for a war party.
In their epic 7-minute song, the thrash metal trio recreates the memory of the early 19th Century musket wars, where Ngapuhi (Northern) tribes, newly armed with muskets, attacked and decimated the de Jong brothers’ Te Arawa (Central North Island) ancestors, who at that time were still using traditional weaponry.
The driving riff that carries the song echoes the pounding footsteps of the war party, while the chorus traces the parts of the full body moko (tattoo) traditionally worn by Māori warriors. The images are of brutal hand-to-hand combat and the taking of slaves, with flashes of white teeth reminding us of the eventual fate of those unfortunate captives.
“Some people might find it a bit grisly,” says singer and lead guitarist Lewis de Jong. “But it’s stuff that actually happened and nobody ever talks about it. We’re not saying it’s right or wrong, it’s just a part of our history.”
The song refers to ‘nga tohu a Tūmatauenga’ (the symbols of Tūmatauenga - the Māori god of war), and it is from this deity that the band’s debut album, Tū, takes its name.
“Quite a few of the songs on the album are about battles or conflict,” says drummer Henry de Jong, who was largely responsible for the lyrics of Kai Tangata. “So we thought it was appropriate to name the album after Tūmatauenga. Tū also means to stand strong and proud, to stand for something; which we think is important as a band and as people.”
The video has special significance for the band due to the locations and people involved. Parts of the clip were filmed at the Waipu Caves, not far from where the band members live. The rest was filmed in the de Jong brothers’ Te Arawa tribal territory; and many of the people featured - including the kapa haka group Te Matarae i Orehu - are members of their Ngati Pikiao whanau (family) and their wider Te Arawa iwi (tribe).

So they are muskets. They only have one shot and then you would have to use it as a club. They are not over exaggerating the facial expressions. That is exactly how they would look to scare and be as intimidating as possible to the enemy. You have to understand their traditions back then. You will have more respect for their culture when you research a little. These are teenage kids in this band and they are trying to keep a dying language alive by writing most of their music in the Mauri tongue.

Mauri tongue? You mean Maori? Te Reo is the formal name for the Maori language.

When they poke their tongue's out like that they're telling their enemies that they want to eat them hence the name of the song Kai Tangata/people eater.

I understand you are ignorant of Maori culture, most Americans are. I am an American, too, and I only learned about it a few years ago, so I'm not trying to be critical. Take this as an opportunity to learn something new about another civilization! _Haka_ are ritual-type rhythmic performances utilized by both male and female Maori of New Zealand. It's most commonly associated with war but they use them for other social events, too, such as weddings, funerals, going-away parties, etc. The haka are deeply revered and sort of knit the community together. They are the ties that bind, if you know what I mean. In terms of aggression, haka were used in war, of course, but are commonly still used in sports. They are meant to instill fear in opponents. From the intense facial expressions and guttural grunts, to the unique sounds of slapping their skin in unison, to the gruff, tribal, almost primitive-sounding vocal chants, they are actually quite intimidating to face, even today. All members of the Maori culture take part in the haka, as all members of the Maori were equally fierce. So, the girl in the video would have been an equal threat to her enemies as the men. They were also known cannibals. These warriors were fierce and one did not want to be captured by a Maori. The Maori were (and are!) a proud people and an absolute force to be reckoned with, but then came the religious people who fucked it all up... just like they did here in the Americas to the natives. Swords, arrows, knives, hatchets, machetes, shields... none of them, combined, were a match against guns. By equipping some tribes with guns, the decimation of all other tribes was guaranteed. The missionaries brought diseases too, even more deadly than the guns... again, just like they had done to the native Americans. Anyway, I've linked a short video of a modern day haka for you to see. Enjoy! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-yiKFYTFJ_kw.html

These men would absolutely shit there pants if a real Maori looked them in the eye and showed them the haka. Like you said. It come with different meanings. But the haka for war. It is terrifying to play footy against. Let alone fight. Reach to the sky and pull the spirits of their warrior ancestors down to their body's. The tattoos are passed down as family's grow. These two men are ignorant clowns that will never understand culture of a warrior.

The Musket enabled a single shot at a time. Trench warfare in Aotearoa-NZ spread globally from here....but getting back to single shot, time waits for no man to reset his barrel fodder, so the but end of the gun became an immediate and effective weapon after the shot was fired. The wide eyes enabled more light to see. The jutted tongue is a genuine pledge to drink the blood of his enemy.. These were very real matters. Maori are the aboriginal peoples of Aotearoa-NZ. Cheers guys, nice!!!!

A musket makes a pretty good club melee weapon, especially if it's got a pointy end (bayonet) - just ask the guys of the 20th Maine men! hehe

The Facial Expressions are not exaggerated, the Maori - the indigenous people of New Zealand were a warring culture, they would often perform a war dance called the Haka. Its all about intimidation. The whole tongue thing...It's a sign that they are going to eat you after they kill you. It harkens back to the Maori warrior traditions. The rifles in the vid are just props used by the re enactment group. Not the actual muskets used. Fun fact: Some of the members of the band have relatives in the re-enactment group as well.
