The Power Loader effect was created in a couple of different ways. Some were a foam exoskeleton that was actually piloted by a very large & strong stuntman, who was enclosed in the chassis behind Sigourney. Some were rod-puppeted while balanced using a large lever. Sometimes it was held up using cables, marionette-style. For background shots, stop-motion and smaller rod-puppets were used. This movie uses no blue or greenscreen effects with actors in frame. All effects with the actors were done using a high-fidelity rear-projection screen with footage filmed using miniatures and puppetry, sort of a low-tech version of Disney's "Volume" used on the Star Wars & Marvel projects in recent years. This had the advantage of blending the lighting from the photography seamlessly and adding focal depth, making the effects look extremely realistic. Cameron, before becoming a director, was an extremely talented special effects technician and matte painter working for Roger Corman. He supervised all of the effects for Battle Beyond the Stars and Galaxy of Terror, and also did the matte paintings for Escape From New York. He re-used many of the techniques he developed on those films for this one, as well as The Terminator and The Abyss.

@@grizzledwizard7129 Other unrelated fun facts: Ripley's elderly daughter is actually played by Sigourney's mom. And Carrie Henn, who played Newt, had never acted before, not even in a school play. The casting director went to schools across the UK trying to cast the part but every kid who had acting experience would look at the camera and smile after saying their lines, which was inappropriate for a kid who was suffering from PTSD. Newt's brother was also played by Carrie's brother, who was often on-set with their mom during school breaks watching Carrie working, and James asked if he'd like a small part in the movie as well.

@@fusionaddict This is one of my favourite Fun Facts: No fewer than FOUR cast members from Aliens, were voice actors on Starfleet, a British English language dub of a Japanese Sci-Fi marionet show. Mark Rolston, who played Drake (The big, gruff blonde Marine) was the voice of the tubby comic relief character and Newt's dad is the hero. The series would also go on to inspire Queen guitarist Brian May to compose an album, with Eddie Van Halen, as a birthday present for May's son, since Starfleet was his favourite TV show.

The Xenomorph Queen is the largest puppet in the history of film. It's about 20 feet long and 14 tall, and is hung from a crane (part of the reason the head is so big is to hide the cables). It requires 12-16 people to operate the creature, a combination of rod puppetry, animatronics, and two stuntmen INSIDE the queen doing the arms.

I've always thought that silent exchange between Ripley and the queen was Ripley indicating "I have a flamethrower. I can incinerate all these eggs. Just let Newt and me back out of the room." The queen seems to agree and orders her drones to back off. It looks like they came to an understanding. But when the egg opens up, Ripley realized the queen went back on her word, hence that "You MF'er" look Ripley gives the queen. It will be interesting to see your reaction and insights about "Alien 3." To say that the film is polarizing is an understatement.

Ripley was undergoing company mandated psych evaluation at the time she was sent back. Burke went as far as to mention her nightmares to her face to try and send her back. She accepted after waking up in tear from the nightmares, and it's fairly safe to assume the company was conditioning her. On the other hand, Burke also mentions she works the docks to keep busy, which explains how she learn to operate the power loader. Small details, but it shows the finesse of the writing of this movie

@@ashscott6068 I can explain away the company’s being lackadaisical about what Ripley got up to by figuring someone at the top knew she was telling the truth about LV426. Two interesting anecdotes. Carrie Henn (Newt) enjoyed sliding down the chute that they shot the scene a number of times. The day before the shoot of the water scene, the Assistant Director had the water heated ready for the next day. When they came to do the scene Newt said the water was too warm, so her and the "Alien" sat on the side bathing their feet in the water till it cooled a little. Carrie went on to become a Primary School Teacher, though Sigourney and her remained close friends.

It wasn't simply that Carrie enjoyed sliding down so much that they shot it a number of times. Carrie loved the slide so much that she kept on deliberately messing up the takes, so that she could go down it again. Finally, James Cameron had to promise her that if she stopped sabotaging the shot, she could then play on it for as long as she wanted.

Two deleted scenes worth mentioning. When they are discussing on how to get the second dropship down, the Aliens banging on the door can still be heard. But, after Bishop volunteers to go outside, the banging then stops. The scene continues on with Vasquez being the first to realise they've broken through the door. Hicks utters the chilling line "Their in the complex". The other deleted scene is Ripley encountering Burke in the hive. Where he is already cocooned and has an alien inside him. She hands him a grenade before moving on. The scene was cut because not enough time had passed for Burke to already be impregnated and conscious. However, Burke using the grenade was what caused the explosion that forced Ripley and Newt to detour in to the Queen's lair.

"....and that a xenomorph may be involved." The word "xenomorph" is not some kind of official term Gorman is using for the alien-it simply means that they believe there's some kind of alien life-form involved in the colony's disappearance. The Colonial Marines have been called in to kill various kinds of aliens before, and they would have used the term "xenomorph" (literally, "strange form," and technically used for any non-terrestrial animal) to refer to whatever "bugs" they were stomping. The Aliens fandom has adopted the term "Xenomorph" to refer to the aliens themselves, but when Gorman used the word, he wasn't referring to our titular Alien aliens-he just meant that there was some kind of unknown alien life down on the planet.
@regulator18E
@regulator18E 6 месяцев назад
To add a little more to this: the line and term also add to Gormans character being a trope of pretentious military officers. There was already a divide between him and the grunts (chow scene "looks like the new LT is too good to eat with us") and him using xenomorph as a technical term was a way for him to appear smarter than the troops. You see right away Frost's reaction is "a what?" and Hicks has to clarify "it's a bug hunt." So the term xenomorph that we've all adopted as a species name was just a made up term by some cherry LT trying to look smarter than his troops 😂

As the late Bill Paxton (Hudson) said about this film; "Aliens is the film that keeps on giving." He was right! I've watched Aliens since roughly 1988, almost for as long as it has existed. I have surely seen it 200 times, easily, over the decades. Know it by heart. And it NEVER gets old! In fact, comparing it to the awfully bad stuff that gets produced today, Aliens puts modern films to absolute shame! This is a sci-fi horror & action movie that is highly emotional! Because it is character driven, by characters that are today legendary. A sequel that respects & honors the first film & gave it a very worthy continuation that makes sense. Everything is practical, very much so including the Queen herself. The only CGI that I know of was added decades later to cover up the hole in the floor in which Lance Henricsen (Bishop) was in when he moves to reach for Newt by the airlock. And they did this with 18 million dollars. Even with inflation over the decades, that is still pocket change compared to what modern films' budgets are & none of them look this realistic. Aliens also got 6 Oscar nomination, won 2. Sigourney was nominated for Best Actress! And this was at a time when sequels & sci-fi & horror flicks were not even considered art, the elites in Hollywood looked down on sequels in particular. But they couldn't ignore the brilliance of this. Still to this day you can't. Some things could get updated today but only a few cosmetic things, the rest you leave alone entirely. Because there's no need to fix this masterpiece. That you see so many other things from this film that came along later is all true, you did not imagine things. Aliens is the nr 1 reason why we have video games where you run around in corridors, armed to the teeth, gunning down monsters etc, was inspired by this. Would have happened eventually anyway but Aliens made sure it happened sooner. Aliens is considered one of the best sequels ever made, alongside TESB & T2 & Godfather 2. Now you know why.

When I was in college I had a roommate who owned a ton of laser tag guns, but only three of the target sensors. We invented an aliens tag game, where two people wore the sensors and were the aliens and everyone else carried a gun and was a Marine. We used one of the University buildings at night with all of the lights except the stairwell emergency lighting turned off. It was a treasure hunt, but there was a facehugger (third sensor) in a box that looked exactly like the prize

The dropship's entire purpose is atmospheric flight via orbital insertion. ... The Nostromo was a commercial towing vehicle, a giant tugboat, and landing on anything was rare. Anything other than a dedicated landing pad was way beyond its design tolerances. That's why all hell broke loose when they tried to land it on LV-426.

I've watched almost all reaction vids to Aliens that are out there. None of them prior to you made the hair on my body stand up as your reaction as when Ripley approaches the Queen inside the powerloader from behind that door! I had absolute chills in that moment because of you. I knew what was gonna happen, you didn't until you saw it. And your wonderful, happy surprise made it so special. You reacted exactly as Cameron intended.

"I can't wait to watch the sequels" 😬 Honestly, I'd advise just playing Alien Isolation and thinking of that as the '3rd movie'. Alien 3 (both versions) is a non-stop kick in the balls to everything Aliens sets up. 😥

Affirmative! - I have seen this movie DOZENS of times. It was my first Alien franchise film when I was a child (an adult took me when I was 9). I had never thought of Hudson's boasting on the drop as his way of re-assuring Ripley. It gives a whole new perspective and adds to the loss of his character. - If you notice, Hicks actually throws Drake's fire off when Newt is first encountered. If not for Hick's Newt would have been lit up by Drake. His weapon has auto-target and tracking assist via the articulated arm. His Helmet Display will be fed IR and other sensor data and actually outline a target. The articulated arms will guide the weapon on target, though will easily respond to you manually moving the weapon and it will retarget what you move towards. As badass as Drake was, he failed to verify the target as hostile before firing, which shows how on edge he must have been. He even got angry at Hicks for misdirecting his fire. However, he quickly realized his error. - Lieutenant Gorman is ultimately at fault for not prepping his units properly. All he had to do was explain why there could not be firing down there and trust his unit to sling the rifles with safeties on, without collecting magazines. Then there would not have been a bag full of magazines to explode. I would have likely withdrawn them and had them rearm with more flame units. Plus they could have put the rifles on single fire and CHECKED shots. Once they killed the chest burster and the movement began, they should have immediately fallen back. If he had explained to at least the Sergeant, then HE would have known to pull back to where the team COULD fire safely. Lieutenant Gorman is again responsible for the fatalities.

I feel like Gorman was "too green" to know he could lean on his noncoms. He seems to feel like any questions are undermining him even when they are just for clarification. He definitely wasn't seasoned enough to lead a team without oversight but the whole operation was FUBAR for jump since the company was in charge and not the Corps.

That could kind of sum-up why people don't like this movie. Alien: psycho-sexual cosmic horror Aliens: aforementioned horror..defeated decisively by a piece of industrial hardware supposed to be all epic, yet renders things strangely banal. Sums up James Cameron's technological fetish perfectly. The Terminator series he created suits his sensibilities much better since it's all ABOUT machines and their relationship to humanity, the very organic body-horror of Alien doesn't suit him

In the context of this film, both "bugs" and "xenomorphs" are generic terms for "nasty space critters". Given how things play out both in and out of story, "xenomorph" quickly became the term for these aliens specifically.

I'm sorry to say, it's all downhill from here. I wish this franchise kept up its amazingly high bar of excellence, but it just doesn't. The rest of the movies look pretty good, but they just fall short, some of them way short of Alien and Aliens. In their defense, that's a high bar to meet. If these two movies never existed, the rest of the franchise would be OK, maybe even slightly better than OK.

When some say that we don't appreciate female protagonist I always think of Ripley, Sarah Connor, Laurie and many others. We have so many amazing characters in SciFi, fantasy and horror. I love how when you first hear the name the plural doesn't seems like something special, but when you see the motion tracker screen and see all those signals, you realize why it was a plural, those weren't just a few.

Cool movie trivia: when James Cameron was casting for the role of Newt every child actor delivered their dialogue very bubbly and with a smile at the end. Carrie Henn not only nailed the dialogue, but gave a serious realistic portrayal of a child with severe PTSD..... Cameron hired her on the spot 👍

Amanda Ripley, daughter of Ellen Louise Ripley. The very same Amanda the Players encounter in Alien Isolation. By the way the photo was Sigourney's mom. That was told in the Making of. Clever, don't you think? Now if it comes to the subject of how all these colonists could live on that planet for such a long period without hostile encounters of the third kind? Well, my guess is that Weyland Yutani kept the exact location of the derelict classified. We can calmly assume that the company was monitoring the lifepod of the Nostromo closely until it was recovered. They knew Ripley was alive. Right after she was back in business the time had come to send out a small team - in this case a family of four - to the wreck in order to make contact with the Xenos. Once infected they sent in the Marines and Ripley as an advisor to deal with the entire colony. This was very well planned and executed as some kind of demonstration. A training ground. They not only wanted the species for their labs but also exclusive combat data from the fight with the soldiers and Ripley herself who had already proofed to be more than capable in such situations. This combat data would have been almost as vital for Weyland Yutani as the creatures because the ultimate goal was to sell them as bio weapons and for that you need to present something to the highest bidders. Something that would convinced them of the species potential.

Also, fun fact: The scene of them cutting through the door of the Narcissus (2:15) is referenced in the Clone Wars in "Eminence" when Death Watch recovers the escape pod with Maul and Savage inside. Edit: Also, I can't bring up Aliens references in TCW without also mentioning the Geonosian queen who, as you could probably guess, took heavy inspiration from the queen Xenomorph.

My theory on why Ripley didn't crush the queen with the pincer is that the power loaders have force sensors & safetys that prevent them from applying any more force than is necessary to hold an object in place.
