The exact wording is "appearing on screen for little more than 16 minutes" which reasonable people take as how long he's in the movie for, and by my DVD copy that translates to 34 minutes 54 seconds including voice time as he enters then exits each of the ten scenes he is in. What makes the figure believable to be fair, other than how unfair it is to Hopkins by having reputable sites blindly repeat it without checking, is that Hannibal is completely absent for extended periods of the movie twice, once for almost 20 minutes and another for over 25 minutes. Also his first appearance isn't until almost 12 minutes in. Here's the breakdown from my DVD giving start - end timestamps = duration (running total): 11:55 - 18:38 = 6:43 (6:43) "May I see your credentials?" 26:54 - 30:20 = 3:26 (10:09) "Your bleeding has stopped." 50:03 - 55:20 = 5:17 (15:26) "Quid pro quo" 57:17 - 58:20 = 1:03 (16:29) "His first name is Louis" 58:49 - 1:02:10 = 3:21 (19:50) "Where will it tickle you?" 1:04:03 - 1:10:45 = 6:42 (26:32) "Good evening, Clarice." 1:11:23 - 1:15:10 = 3:47 (30:19) "Mind the drawings please." 1:16:52 - 1:19:31 = 2:39 (32:58) "Talk to him!" 1:21:13 - 1:21:33 = 0:20 (33:18) "Pulse 84." 1:47:26 - 1:49:02 = 1:36 (34:54) "I'm having an old friend for dinner."

Just FYI, that wasn't a bone he used to pick the lock. It was the spring mechanism from the ink pen he was eyeballing when they strapped him to the gurney earlier.

It was actually the outside clip at the top of the pen...like the part that holds it outside of your shirt pocket when pen is on the inside...just that thin strip.

Thanks, Grizz! 🐑 I saw this in a free midnight screening the night before it opened wide. The audience was very vocal. It's still a huge favorite. The other connected movies and tv series are enjoyable as well... but none quite as skillfully presented and performed as this one.

The story was inspired by the time when the FBI asked Ted Bundy to create a profile on the green river killer, when they finally caught him they realized that Bundys profile was pretty accurate. The “glass” of his cell is most likely thick plexiglass and not really glass, that would be too dangerous. The scene where bill kidnapped Catherine was also inspired by Bundy who would fake having a broken arm and pretend he was struggling to get something in his car to get the woman he wanted to help him, he would then hit her over the head and pushed her Into his car. The character of Buffalo Bill was inspired by a few killers like Ed Gein who besides killing 3 people he would also dig up recently buried bodies and use them to make things like a lampshade and a pair of gloves made out of skin and furniture made out of bones and skulls. Jodie foster recently said that Anthony Hopkins improvised the lines where he made fun of her accent and shoes, the accent line bugged Jodie because she had worked hard on the accent. She and Anthony also never spoke during filming. I also recently learned that the actors who played Buffalo Bill and Catherine actually dated during the filming of the movie. Precious the dog was also in the movies The burbs and Pee wees big adventure.

Been watching your reaction channel, and love your content. Your reactions are very insightful. For SOTL, the focus IS Buffalo Bill, the same as in the book. Lector is just there to move the plot. Back when it first came out this was obvious...you waiting many years to watch it, like you said, created something in your mind that was never part of the movie nor the book. In Manhunter (based on the book Red Dragon), and Red Dragon the movie, Lector also plays a secondary role, even less than SOTL.

I think what makes Lecter "scary" is the fact that he is portrayed as this "animal" because of what he did an who he is. A gentleman, who was a respected doctor, wirh profound knowledge of things, calm. However, he is something else underneath all that. He got the other guy ib prison to kill hilmself just by playing with his mind. You might have been underwhelmed because,maybe, you were expecting him to be the villain in the movie. The way I see it, he didn't help her catch Bill. He helped her overcome her past, as a doctor. And I agree, the actor who played Bill (don't know hos name) he deserved an Oscar in a supporting role. And Jodie, well, one of ...if not my favorite actress. She is great.

@@moon-moth1 well, catching bill is how she would find "peace of mind". It could have been something else. But that was the how. He liked her. As he said, the world is better (or more interesting , I can't remember) with her in it. He wasn't mean to her after she was attacked by the "body fluid" guy. We can compare his attitude towards the senator, to see the difference. Most people think it was disgusting when he touched Clarice's finger. I see it more as affection. Much different from the way other guys addressed her. Hahaha anyway, this movie gives room for so much discussion and interpretation. I guess this is why it's so good. Hahahaha

Just so you know: This is based on a series of books. The first book was called "Red Dragon" (and has been made into two movies (one called "Manhunter" and then another one called "Red Dragon" (the 2nd having Hopkins back as Lecter). The 2nd book is Silence of the Lambs. The third book is "Hannibal" and they really did a disservice with the movie adaptation of it. You really should see Red Dragon next as that was the first book. The movie is OK... but sadly, both the following movies that came after Silence of the Lambs don't have the brilliant subtlety of this movie. Silence of the Lambs absolutely is a crime thriller and not a horror movie. Too many stores and services list it as horror which I don't think it should be in.

@@nivekianI strongly disagree, Manhunter has a completely different cast and while Hannibal is represented as best as he could be, it is nothing like Anthony Hopkins. If he is trying to watch the trilogy, he should watch The Silence of the Lambs, Hannibal, and then the prequel Red Dragon. That is the order they were released in, and there is a large reason for that. It also maintains Hannibal as the same brilliant character actor throughout. I also don’t understand why everyone hates on Hannibal as a film. It truly makes me wonder the last time any of you watched it. It is not like this masterpiece at all, but the film is above and beyond 90% of drama films released today.

@@joshuacoldwater I have to say that having a different cast doesn't make it any better or worse, it is just different and I think both movies are good in their own unique way; there are different postures and points of view in this regard: One may argue that Manhunter is very inconsistent and choppy at certain points with the scene choice, but being different doesn't make it any worse. In fact there's a marked artistic value that people see in the movie's cinematography and narrative, which is totally valid. I think in some ways "Red Dragon" is a superior or better movie in the sense that the tone of "Manhunter" is entirely different and inconsistent with all the other on screen adaptations of the story, has some questionable acting choices and some questionable acting altogether, at points is very over-the-tok and gets to feel too camp for the general feel fot he movie, Manhunter is more of a "Miami Vice", noire crime mystery film than an action-suspense film, which doesn't sit right with some readings of the books and the other movies and series, while "Red Dragon" is a more raw, grittier tone, has the more cohesive cast, with some of the greatest actors of the last 30 or 40 years, where they tend to shine at times, it's more of a blockbuster film which speaks to the appeal of it, it's also consistent because of the cast of course. The ending for "Red Dragon" is remarkably better, a thousand times better than the original "Manhunter". Still, "Manhunter" is better in the sense that it is the better adaptation to the book, a bit more accurate to the book in some regards and the art in it is quite more developed, richer and better than "Red Dragon", some of the scenes are quite beautiful and has a much fuller feel and sense in what it conveys of the characters, like the intentions and story of Will Graham as a tortured former agent (which is much closer to the original book) and how the characters tend to interact, the tensions and awkward moments feel more authentic and real than "big screen" in a way. So there are many pros and cons to both but it boils down to each being their own entity, it's difficult to contrast them being a totally different adaptation with a different budget, tone and cast.

It's funny how movies have changed over the years. In 1991, this was almost revolutionary. The chilling psychological stuff, the glimpses of skinned people, the scene with Miggs. It wasn't as bloody as things like Nightmare on Elm Street or Friday the 13th, etc, but those were obviously fake and rather silly movie monsters. This felt real, it took us inside the minds of not one but two psychos in ways never really seen to this depth and with this sense of verisimilitude. Now, a few decades later, this kind of stuff is on TV. Times have changed. Audiences are desensitized. That's OK. Now we have The Boys and GOT and Dexter, among many others. it's probably a win. But when people see a movie like Silence of the Lambs for the first time in 2023, it seems pretty pedestrian, commonplace, rather than the ground breaking masterpiece it was.

To be fair, you have been overexposed to the unexpected talk/actions of Hannibal which watered them down, at least to a degree. You've had 30 years of casual, pop-culture references and exposure (which has often been mocking). Case in point: Dumb and Dumber (among many, many others).

If you want to learn more about the backstory of Hannibal Lecter, I highly recommend the TV show Hannibal with Mads Mikkelsen as Lecter. He does such a good job in the role, back when Hannibal is still free and is a licensed therapist.

Or read the books. The TV series is good for the first 2 seasons, then go off the script with the source material. The first book in the 4 book series is Red Dragon. The 2nd book is Silence of the Lambs, and the third book is Hannibal. The last book is Hannibal Rising. It is explained in both Red Dragon and Silence of the Lambs that Hannibal keeps up with modern psychiatric practices and during Red Dragon he was corresponding with masters and doctoral students as well as some other professors in the field. The events of Red Dragon make most of these go away, but he still subscribs to medical magazines. It these kind of details that get lost in translation to a visual medium.

TV skow is rubbish. I recommend watch movies based On Thomas Harris's books: 1) Hannibal Rising. 2) The Red Dragon. 3) Silent of the lambs. 4) Hannibal. Then you know what the story really is about it is not only about killing and cannibalism.

1. The lisping sound Hopkins makes after he says, 'I ate his liver with some fava beans and a nice chianti." is the first scene he and Foster did together and he wanted to freak her out, so her reaction is real. 2. Ted Levine/Buffalo Bill was so disturbing that he received death threats after this was released. 3. The FBI actually let them use their Quantico facility to film. 4. In the book Crawford did have a "thing" for Clarice. 5. "I'm coming to get you Murdock". The late Charles Napier/Lt. Boyle played Murdock in Rambo First Blood II. A great first time/share. 6. Everybody is hitting on Clarice but IRL hitting on Foster is a waste of time and effort. She doesn't fly that way. 🙄 She has been married to a woman since it became legal in Caliphony. 7. Dr. Lecter was treating Clarice 8. Others will pass this to you as well but: This movie won ALL 5 of the big Oscars.😎 Levine should have gotten best supporting.

This one is good, but the sequel is a masterpiece in (fictional) predatory psychology. And if you haven't seen the prequel series, HANNIBAL, it's super creepy and gives some insight into Hannibal's attitude Nd responses in this film. Mads did a great job portraying the villain.

Anthony Hopkins' Hannibal is very much an over the top caricature. You could just put a black cape on him and you basically have Count Dracula. It's delightful and fun, but it does kind of put a cap on just how scary the character makes you feel as an audience member.

Great reaction. Of all the times I have seen this movie, and watched other reactors watch it, I have never thought about who was in the bathtub. Your theory makes absolute perfect sense, and I never gave it a second thought. It might be something well known to book readers or researches of this movie, but just not something I expected to know, nor want to know.

I love some of the subtle things you have to really pay attention to notice. For instance, when he says "You won't find the answer on your shoes" to her, if you look at the framing, he has his back to her... so he doesn't see her look down at her shoes, but he KNOWS that's what she is doing. My all time favorite moment is a SECOND's worth of acting from Hopkins that I still think is one of the most impressive performances I have ever seen. After Clarice reveals the deep truth to him... after she has shown him all the respect he really wanted, he is ready to tell her what she wants to know... but Chilton comes in... and you see in a mere moment of time Hopkins give us anger that Chilton came in at such an inopportune time - frustration and even shame that he could not reward Clarice's honesty with the direct truth he felt she now deserved and further frustration at the whole situation into a cold emotionless stare. It all happens so fast, emotes so much... and it AMAZES me every time I watch it.

As popular as Hopkin’s portrayal of Hannibal is…I think Mads Mikkelson’s portrayal is the definitive version. The Hannibal series allowed him to create a version of Hannibal Lecter that is cold and calculated with a subtle charm and hidden monstrosity. Tiny facial ticks and glints in the eyes speaks volumes over Hopkins’ hammy over the top performance. Maybe you can find out for yourself sometime

I agree with you 100%. That same technique was used in the first Alien production. Very seldom is "The Creature" shown in full. Even when it is shown it is short-lived and segmented. That movie made me want to climb through a porthole and face frying on one side and freezing on the other in the depths of space as opposed to any confrontation with THAT! Our imaginations are filled with things writhing in the shadows and underneath rocks.

I feel like Hannibal as a character is this larger than life evil, while Buffalo Bill is more True Crime inspired. I've never found Lecter to be "scary", but I love watching him as a classic Movie Villain. I think if you keep that expectation you'll be able to enjoy Hopkin's performance even more. Either way, fun reaction 🙏.

Your assessment was, I think, correct: You were the unwitting victim of preconceived notions about Lector. And, your summation seemed at odds with itself. Was Hopkins pushing too hard or was it not enough for you? Ultimately, his was an incredible, nuanced, and career-defining performance that rightfully earned an Oscar for Best Actor.

I think Buffalo Bill is scarier because he's more human, being a composite of 3 different real life serial killers, including Ted Bundy. Lecter is far less psychotic, almost inhuman. The portrayal of the trans issue dates it quite a bit, though I'm not sure it's as offensive as a lot of people make it out to be, as the movie makes it clear that most trans people are NOT ax-crazy serial killers :D

Your point at 2:30 is why this movie is so great. It's a suspense thriller/horror movie. It knows exactly how much gore to show you. The problem with most horror movies like Saw is that they're just gore-fests. There's a psychological aspect to Silence of the Lambs and everything is as subtle as it can be. The director is leaving it up to you to fill in a lot of blanks, and it makes the movie a lot more effective, especially when they do show you some intense scenes. They hit harder and you never get desensitized to the violence. Everything has an impact because it's not excessive. The next movie, Hannibal, is the exact opposite. Ridley Scott is the director of that movie and he's very on the nose with everything, including the fact that everyone's misogynist against Clarice. Here, no one actually comes out and says that she's a piece of meat to them and they don't take her seriously. It's just implied. In Hannibal, it's flat out stated. Except for one scene that's really over the top and stands out for that reason, it's forgettable and pretentious. If you want to continue the series, I'd go to Red Dragon, the prequel. It's a terrific movie. Hannibal Rising, the origin story, isn't bad, but it's not great. I enjoyed some of it and the performance of the lead actor, Gaspard Ulliel, but it's cheesy and feels like a fantasy horror more than the realistic psychological horror that this movie is. As stated, Anthony Hopkins is amazing and his chemistry with Jodie Foster is great. Subbed!

I'm glad GW is watching the sequel Hannibal directed by Ridley Scott is in many ways like a classy Italian cuisine compared to this American classic dish. Also Red Dragon was great.

You might want to check out Manhunter from 1986. It's based off of Red Dragon, the first of the Lecter novels by Thomas Harris and it's fantastic. Also, you're right in that Buffalo Bill, just like Leatherface and Norman Bates, are all based off of the famous Mr. Wisconsin of 1957. The late, great Eddie G.

I agree this portrayal of Hannibal Lecter is a bit obvious and relies on us being told how terrible he is rather than seeing for ourselves.. My favorite portrayal is still Brian Cox in Manhunter, which is the first adaptation of Red Dragon made by Michael Mann. Cox's performance as Lecter is extremely understated yet deeply unsettling,

There Hannibal and Red Dragon that are in the same series! Hannibal has Gary Oldman, Julianne Moore (is Clarice in this movie), and Ray Liota and Red Dragon has Edward Norton and Ralph Fiennes (also has Harbey Keitel and Philip Seymour Hoffman as well!). Sir Anthony Hopkins is in both, though!

This is one of the few movies I can watch only like every 5 years or more. I always saw it on cable so it was edited. It was only a couple years where I streamed it and watched it unedited, freaked me out all over again. Its horror aspect to me is the psychological triller, kinda like the show Mindhunter, it just unsettling getting a look into these serial killers. Buffalo Bill for me is scarier too. But Hannibal can be scary though in terms of his intelligence (escape scene is just eeek). Despite being scared, I've enjoyed this world and have seen all the movies, Red Dragon being my favorite. I also got into the TV show too with Mads Mikkelsen. It's how I found out there's a 1980s movie that came out before Silence of the Lambs, called Manhunter that's an adaption of Red Dragon with Brian Cox as Hannibal. Great reaction and it was interesting to hear your commentary. I kinda can relate with feeling a little underwhelmed with Hannnibal's portrayal. I was like that when I saw Psycho for the first time as a teen in regards to a famous scene where I was like 'so that's the context' and was a little underwhelmed. Thankfully other things were not ruined for me, so the movie still caught me off guard.

As others have mentioned, you should check out Manhunter, which was based on the prequel novel Red Dragon. It gets somewhat overlooked, and it's very '80s lol, but it's a much better adaptation than the movie Red Dragon imo. Also, the TV show Hannibal is excellent. Those two couldn't be farther apart in style, but they're both well worth watching. This was a really great reaction. : )

You’re completely right seeing through Lecter. He knew from the start who Buffalo Bill was and just played to make himself look as a genius with a special insight. His profile about Starling completely wrong also. Still, he did excellent therapy onto Clarice.

While this is one of the best book to movie adaptations that exists, there are still so much that is missing from this movie. If you ever have the time to read/listen to the Hannibal book series I think you would find it entertaining. Thomas Harris studied with the FBI behavioral science unit in order to make his serial killers fill real and have the tactics used by the FBI profilers also feel real. Because they were based on real cases and real tactics to catch serial killers. Also the books are written in a way were each chapter follows one character. The character who you are following dose change. Your primary characters are your serial killer and the profiler hunting them. Then each book has supporting characters that occasionally get a chapter to themselves. It fills in the details missing in the adaptation.

Hannibal the tv show is excellent as well. Madds Mikkeleson plays a younger Dr. Lecter. If you think this Hannibal is trying too hard youll love Madds version.

Hi GW. I appreciate and enjoy your thoughtful commentary. But it's often quite long-winded considering you don't pause the movie in the background, and I feel like you end up talking over a lot of scenes. Would you consider pausing the movie while you make longer comments, so that you don't miss important dialog and atmosphere?

So my opinion probably doesn’t matter, but I prefer Red Dragon over Manhunter. Manhunter has a completely different cast and while Hannibal is represented as best as he could be, it is nothing like Anthony Hopkins. I also wouldn’t watch Red Dragon next. If you are trying to watch the trilogy, you should watch The Silence of the Lambs, Hannibal, and then the prequel Red Dragon. That is the order they were released in, and there is a large reason for that. It also maintains Hannibal as the same brilliant character actor throughout. I also don’t understand why everyone hates on Hannibal as a film. It truly makes me wonder the last time any of them watched it 😂. It is not like this masterpiece at all, but the film is above and beyond 90% of drama films released today. Anyways, just thought I’d share my opinion.

It's not mentioned in the movie but it is in the book that Lecter was still getting published regularly in medical journals. That was another cause of tension between him and his jailor, Dr. Chilton, because Chilton was still practicing and his writing got rejected on a regular basis. Professional jealousy, among other things.

I think Hannibal Lecter is not a serial killer. The people he killed murdered his little sister Masha and ate her and that spiraled into Hannibal's cannibalism. You must watch the first Hannibal movie: Hannibal Rising. it discribes Hannibal's childhood in WWII time Lithunia. Nazies found his family hiding in forest lodge and they slaughtered count and countess Lecter only Hannibal and his little sister Masha survived hiding until a group of Soviet vagabonds happen to wander their lodge and captured Hannibal and Masha. Later Soviets murder Masha and ate her. HannibaL was saved and put into in an orphanage where from he later manahed to escape and finaly he escaped over the Berlin wall to western Europe. He found his aunt living in Paris and there he had some normal life and he studied medicne there and later moved USA after he got to know that the last one of Soviets who slaughter his sister Masha live now in USA. Second movie is : The Red Dragon. This movie Hannibal Lecter is a famous psychiatric and hee cooperates with the police to find the serial killer Red Dragon. And by the way it wasn't Crawford who captured Hannibal finaly he was Will Graham. And then these the THIR MOVIE: SILENT OF THE LAM,BS what you happen to watch and you drew wrong conclusions from it. Detective Clarisse Starling remains Hannibal of his late little sister Masha who the Soviets ate. I say no more. Fourth movie is Hannibal: Hannibal returns to save Clarisse. Too bad the movie ends differently than Thomas Harris's book ends by the book Clarisse escapes with Hannibal and they live together some where in Sout America.

Try suspending disbelief instead of pointing our your issues of logic or plausibility while you're watching. IMO It makes the reaction less sincere somehow and feels sort of insulting to the filmmakers. Save it for the outro.

The reason for the in person meetingvis alecter insisted: "Ill the rest to the senator herself, but only in" whatever city is was. I guess part of your schtick is trying to tear the movie apart as you watch it, but such things can be overdone & become tedious.
