An Evening with Richard Dawkins & Brian Greene in NYC on Nov 1st 2018. The awe-inspiring Dawkins sits down with Theoretical Physicist Brian Greene to talk all things science. #aliens #god #richarddawkins #briangreene #atheism #atheist
I'm fascinated by Mr. Greene's ability to explain and describe complex ideas in wonderfully simple and eloquent terms. What a wonderful gift to humanity these two gentlemen are and we need more like them in the world communicating the wonders of science and rational inquiry to the general public.
I think they implicitly mentioned an important point that I have been thinking about for quite some time now - what if on other worlds some other highly complex entities exist that we wouldn't even call life forms because they would exhibit properties completely different from the properties of living organisms, and we can't even imagine them yet with our present knowledge of matter? Simply put, life is just an extreme form, expression or manifestation of chemistry - who knows what OTHER kinds of highly complex manifestations of matter exist out there? I wonder what their thoughts would be on that...
He founded a place for reason and science, not only is Richard Dawkins an agnostic, he's also a rationalist. I read quarter way his powerful book 'The God Delusion', it overwhelms with the religious antibelief of atheism. It's for atheists, I don't think it applies to a Muslim who's required not to believe in God if they become atheists.
@@DrVonRhein I've wondered about that too. It sounds highly plausible. We can't even comprehend the 4th dimension, who knows what's in the higher dimensions...
ł m His genome is copied and is in a hard disk. We can create an infinite copies of Richard Dawkins in the future if we apply the right environmental conditions for the genotype to express itself
@@pauljones4369 He was popular in the Biology community for a long time, ever since he published the selfish gene, but he came to mainstream attention for his talks on atheism.
Paid Russian Troll yes that’s right. but it’s now widely expected that’s his arguments for atheism is very weak.and not even taken seriously by true atheist thinkers
MrKritik77 yeah right a gentleman. People have been paying to come see him.. Been listening for two long hours..now they gonna buy his book..n instead of being humble and being a gentleman, he is making the rules and talks to the audience as if they were kids in kindergarten. dont do this dont do that "and please no selfies"
RED the very end of the video 1:57 he is making the rules to the people that gonna buy his book. No this no that n no selfies...they have been listening to him for two hours n he doesnt even wanna give them a few seconds each..also if u watch other debates he has a habit of shouting at the audience "how can u applaude this! " when they r applauding his opponent..also the way he always mimics n makes fun of that woman he debated a few years earlier "show me the evidence show me the evidence"...so, no, gentleman wouldn't be the best way to describe mr dawkin
nad omari He is a HIGHLY intelligent person A lot of what they talked about I didn't understand but I love learning and I wish I had brains like that He can come across a bit abrupt but ALL highly intelligent people have something odd about them and the smarter they are the more odd they can be. He probably finds it difficult speaking in public, you never know. I'm not a young person I may not be as smart as Dawkins but I am very good with people and I think some people can be threatened by intelligence and may take them the wrong way just because they are a little odd. I think he's amazing I wish there were more like him
I followed Brian Green's work for decades. I love the way as a scientist he's able to keep an open mind and stay genuinely curious about all ideas. Very intelligent and admirable fellow.
That's like saying because you watch a computer screen you invented the computer. These people have no relation to Darwin or Newton. They are spectators like you only have observed the program more closely.
It looks like they let the production crew have some fun with their nice cameras. The "Brian Greene and Richard Dawkins Adjust Their Headsets" music video!
I am so happy to see Professor Dawkins and sad at the same time to see him getting older. May you live long for the sake of humanity my dear professor.
How have I not heard of this Brian Greene as of yet ? Adding him to my list of heroes such as Dawkins, Hitchens..etc. Great discussion thanks all involved.. Someone please sign Dawkins up for another two hundred years as a thank you for his contributions to all humanity !!!
What an absolute joy it is to listen to these two great thinkers and world-famous scientists go at it in such an informal discussion of mind boggling ideas. This is the true value of the internet.
I was feeling like crap since a few days. I was really in need of some awesome data input and found this. The two people who's in the topmost list of my list of most amazing people and it made my day!!! 😍 Both the genius talking to each other are like two neutron stars. Thu emit so much light and energy that I was baffled.
I actually appreciate fundamentalist like Ken Ham. Sincerely, real talk. People like Ken Ham are honest about their convictions. Ham says "I begin with the Bible," and also that, for him, there is absolutely zero argument that can be presented that will change his mind. This is truly the power of organized religion generally and politicized religion in particular. In no other area of intellectual inquiry can one maintain such a dogmatic position, unflinchingly, and that is because religious propositions are neither testable nor falsifiable.
I love how a bit nervous and cautious they are at the beginning of talk and very absorbed, amused and relaxed in the middle and at the end of it. Fascinating talk!

It’s remarkably easier to have a pleasant and interesting discussion & keep the debates to a minimum) when both participants are rational & don’t enlist magical / supernatural claims in their arguments.
Brian Greene always does a great job as a mediator even if it’s just him and one other person. Richard Dawkins has so much knowledge and I love people who are honest in their convictions. I completely agree with him but if I didn’t , I would still have the upmost respect for him. His English Accent helps when he says certain things too. This was a great video which I knew it would be.
So fascinating to watch a scientist in one domain become excited to ask a question of the one in the other domain who then begins to explain but becomes too excited as he thinks about it leading him to ask a question he wants to know in the domain of the other scientist. THIS is the essence of science and the scientific mind and it is beautifully on display. Questions, questions, and more questions. What fun! A slight deviation from what you would see on a Theistic show.
Fantastic, so inspiring and special to have two heavyweights on two such critical fields in the same space. Well worth the full two hours. The discussions on the origin of life, of the origin of the universe, the nature of consciousness (and the honest brick wall feedback on the subject), considered in a dialogue between these two great minds, is very special indeed. Quite unique
For me, the best line was when Greene said that he believes that we're just "bags of particles following the laws of physics AND NOTHING ELSE". That is what I think. His story admits his irrational side, (I call it my reptile brain) which I also have. Sometimes I do 'pray' for a good outcome to something, even though I am completely convinced that prayer is meaningless. It's just that there's nothing else to do in some dire situations. It's like when Homer Simpson said, "I'm not a praying man, but if you're out there... save me, Superman!"
Superman? That's the ubermensch of America. I still think religion is not natural to get into, I think I'm getting tired of it, but religion is addictive, and it's getting boring. I'm not proud of my obsessions because I get bored with them. I'm getting tired of religion, and perhaps my cure of religion is getting closer and closer. I don't know what to believe, am I to be secular? I don't know. Religion is uninteresting if you think about it, and so is atheism, or maybe common religions are contemptible. Why can't people just do without prayer, God, souls, spirits and anything like that? I think maybe, just maybe, anything of religion is a disease, and atheists get laughed at. Atheism is a religion, and I'm so very bored, I don't know how to stop.

I thought this event will be released first as a teaser, then as a recap, and finally as a 240p (1080p with low bitrate) video in November 2019. But this is a pleasant surprise indeed. Thanks for the upload.
That is one of the greatest discussions I have ever had the good fortune of witnessing. Just amazing, and entertaining too. I'm not a scientist, but I was able to understand most of the conversation. Big thanks to all who were involved in the creation of this event/video.
The inspirational Richard Dawkins has created his own legacy that will influence many generations to come. One of the most critical thinkers of our time propagating truth, logic and reason 🙏
laurencefisher1 if we follow the money then we can also take a long hard look at evangelical preachers and pastors who enjoy their tax free status and exploit the system so far as the mega-churches that rake in millions of dollars from people’s hard earned wages just to sell them snake oil and a pipedream. Meanwhile these charlatans can be happy AF in their multi million dollar homes and travel in their private jets. Following the money brought me to this conclusion maybe you should practice what you preach.
What an enlightening conversation on profound mistry of life but wish Brian would let Dawkins speak more than himself. If you draw a list of most beautiful minds of humanity, Richard Dawkins and Carl Sagan will always be there.
There is no hell, only mortality. Loss of consciousness, decaying flesh, food for worms. The Truth and only the Truth shall free your soul in eternity. The lie shall be your final and deserving fate. This is the Truth revealed through humility and wisdom and love. :)
@@markanthonyk1504 It is true that we both do know the absolute truth. Fine tuning of the universe clearly shows that existence of life happening spontaneously is of extremely low probability. Therefore agnostic theism is better choice than atheism.
I am flabergasted by their patience answering idiotic questions about connection betweens dark energy and consciousness and other bs. Great talk though. Taught me patience.
i wouldn't dismiss this kind of "jedi-ism", it may turn out that entanglement does have more effect than we can now detect, never forget arthur clark, scientists can be wrong, even greene admits to trying a prayer, they don't "work" but maybe they influence. thought for the day : if you pray basically you're telling god you don't like his current plan and that you have a better idea.
Brian Greene's respect and admiration for Sir Richard Dawkins is so cool! Plus not too much muddy discussion about religion keeps it all clean about science for the first half.
His book of the same title settled my mind as well. I don't believe in God, Mars, Allah, or the Spaghetti Monster. I believe in human endeavor and the progression of knowledge.
Mark Anthony K I was confused about believing in God when I bumped into his speech. A couple of these later and I discovered I was actually an atheist and why it’s a logical choice to make.
How great is it that we live in a time where we are able to watch conversations between the great minds of our time. When I was a kid it was hard enough to find out facts let alone hear the opinions of the top minds in science. Growing up in the 80s/90s you either had to be in the room with an expert or hope there was a book at the library to answer your questions. It was also super easy for people to make sht up and you had no way of fact-checking what they told you. We live in a great time, make the most of how easy it is to educate your self nowadays. 💯
@laurencefisher1 You need to get smart! Tell me how we have Adam and Eve that popped out of fin air only 6000 years ago, and the dinosaurs of 65 million years ago and the prehistoric man just over a hundred thousand years ago.....waiting!
