Impressive how with some few scenes James Cameron created chemistry between them without being forced or out of the blue. Also, the way he fleshed out the badass side of Ripley without ruining her vulnerable side as a human. She can wipeout an entire species, but she can still get hurt and is scared of things like all of us - that's how you write a great character.
I literally said this exact same thing in another video. Cameron made her a badass out of necessity. It wasn;t forced like Hollywood creating these overly badass heroine movies nowadays. Ripley had to be a badass for survival...not because it was cool, or because she was trying to prove herself to the space marines.
The look on Ripley’d face when Hicks pumps the grenade launcher. She shows that fear, and I believe it’s a very real reaction. Like Veronica Cartwright in the first movie during the Chestbursting scene. Despite her badass side, Sigourney wasn’t a fan of guns.
@@253jacksonrhoads1 Yeah, I remember reading Sigourney Weaver was a bit surprised when the movie was so violent and military driven. That reaction to the gun either real or not, it's a nice touch since Ripley (apparently, although has an officer in space I'm sure she must've had some kind of weapon's training, at least small arms fire) but since she probably never handled that kind of weapon, it's way more natural for her to be weary of it rather then being immediately at ease just because she was the lead and a "badass". I think that's the fragility and vulnerability that Sigourney brings to the character, but when needed she steps up and shows her side as a natural leader, making Ripley a great character.
I always refer to this as a sex scene without the sex. It gets the exact same point across without the softcore porn. It also helps skirt the cliche of every single male and female lead needing to hook up
"Ehhhhh that's the grenade launcher I don't think you wanna mess with that." I LOVE that line! Hicks sets a barrier and wonders if she'll cross it, which she does.
Disagree. Hicks was hesitant to teach her how to use the grenade launcher because it doesn't take much(in terms of a lack of awareness) to accidentally kill yourself or someone else. Also knowing how to have the discernment to use it in close quarters requires special skill and training, something that takes time(a luxury they didn't have). This was more of an emergency crash course, so it makes sense as to why he was reluctant. It wasn't a test.
Romans OneSixteen but she made it One. I personally, love the interaction between these characters. It’s all slightly sizzly and underplayed, like ; “ when we get back to civilisation ... Or Not. “ moment. Even though it appears as a typical love interest moment in the movie, the connection the characters have, makes sense in the later scenes. Love this movie 🥰
@@jenniferschmitzer299 I love it. The way they interacted just screams that if they had met under better circumstances...(even though she's 57+ years older than him)
The opening scene to Aliens 3 where (SPOILERS) Bishop, Newt, and Hicks are revealed to have died off camera between the two films was literally like getting slapped in the face. I remember watching Alien 3 with my Dad a few days after we finished watching Alien and Aliens for the first time, and the opening was literally the equivalent of breaking my fucking heart 3 times within a minute. As soon as the opening credits confirmed all 3 were dead, me and my Dad exchanged furious eye contact and wordlessly shut it off right there and pretended that Aliens was the only sequel. Hell, I would have taken them all dying in the crash landing over killing them all off screen. And it just makes it SO much worse when you pull shit like that in the sequel to a great movie, because it completely destroys the purpose and emotional impact of the previous films. Oh Ripley is going to risk her life to try to save Newt against all odds? Why even bother, she's about to be dead again anyways. What the fuck was anything in Alien's even all for?
@@tankmaster1018 agree, Aliens 3 was a travesty of a film. You were smarter than me by switching off soon after the start. I sat through it unfortunately and it did not get any better. I also pretend it does not exist, nor any of the subsequent sequels they made.Cameron made Aliens out of love of the first film, and it shows; the rest were ridiculous cash grabs.
We saw them in Alien 3 when the company soldiers shoot Morse in the leg and Aaron gets shot dead. The sound is a traditional movie machine gun, but they’re pulse rifles.
I love that Sigourney did this for the film. She's outspoken in her dislike of guns, but Ripley is a survivor, and a survivor would have to adapt. Hence, she learns how to use a gun.
She didn't want to use the guns, but apparently James Cameron took her to a range and had her fire a real machine gun with live rounds in preparation for the role and she reluctantly admitted that she enjoyed it.
Hicks is a man among men. No toxic masculinity in site. Just genuine masculinity. Soft. Gentle. Hard when the occasion calls for it. This hetero has a mean man crush.
It’s interesting how Sigourney said that she didn’t want her character to have a gun while making this movie. But after some convincing and time, she realized that this was the right choice.
Joshua Santana There’s no way she said that, really? My memory of her with that pulse rifle retrieving Nute with that pulse rifle is too vivid to imagine her without it.
Mike Halve perhaps that was after the fact, but there were 3 requests she asked for from James Cameron during the making of this film 1-Her character must not use any guns 2-She had to have sex with the Xenomorph alien 3-She had to die Cameron denied the requests but as Weaver became producer in the next two films after “Aliens”, she got her wish. This is all on the Behind the Scene documentary for “Aliens” and “Alien 3”
@@Beforezzz Think about the first film. There is a lot of sexual imagery in that film. The second film ditched that motif, in favor of action spectacle I think Sigourney wanted to keep the Xenomorph sexual motif going 🤷🏽♂️
@@joshuasantana685 That's taking it to an entirely different level isn't it? lmao I wonder what were the details behind those requests because it sounds like she didn't quite realize the direction Alien was headed yet.
Why the fuck did they kill him off and the third one? Probably would have made the third one a success. The third one was okay I heard it wasn't much of a success probably made some money but not much
@@DUKETACTICS333 the third one went through development hell and the script was rewritten a ton of times. By the time they got around to it newt was way too old to play the same character that was supposedly in hypersleep, and I think Behin was busy with another project but don't quote me on that. So they ended up just writing those characters out. However they reconned this in a recent video game, and said he somehow survived.
Did this guy go around the whole galaxy to teach pretty girls how to fight? I wouldn't surprised if there would be some cut scene of him teaching princess Leia to shoot Stormtrooper! 😂😂

Just shut up with the political gatekeeping already because it's just as annoying as a character's gender or race being shoved down our throats.
Previous decades movies strong female character: their being cool is rooted in learning, tough life experience, motivation, pushing through and making hard choices. Modern movies "strong" female character: a Mary Sue in heavy plot armour that is strong and capable "just because".
Jesus Christ is this all you idiots do nowadays, complain about movies you don't like and bring that garbage everywhere and talk about this "mary sue". jesus christ shut up, and get that crap out of here no one wants to hear this gatekeeping nonsense.
It's kinda sad to think that if they made a reboot today this scene probably wouldn't even exist since it'd the usual "she's already a perfect badass who needs no man to explain anything". Ugh. I'm a woman and I greatly enjoyed the interaction between these two, it felt perfectly natural with a very nice dose of respectful chemistry. Plus Ripley is one of my all time favorite heroes _because_ she's so human and realistic, she faces a threat like no other and needs to learn and adapt. She's highly motivated and capable but still allowed to be vulnerable. She's *very* relatable. I bet I'd hate any reboot Ripley since they'd totally miss what made the character so great.
With CGI deaging it could be possible, but only way to suceed it would be having Cameron not only as producer but director. And it could start with Ripley waking up from hibernation and briefly talking about a bad dream where they were all dead( Alien3 )
@@Sergiovsousa we dont even need the Cgi deaging .. they can just retcon the Alien 3 movie .. and explain that Ellen,Hicks and Newt aged in their cryosleep due to a malfunction but they were still being preserved.

...And then the M41A was immediately replaced with the M41A Mk. II come the Fiorina 161 incident, and the Mk. II would itself be replaced with the M41A/2 come the Freya's Prospect outbreak.
If I remember correctly, it takes 10mm (its mentioned in a scene where the marines are looking for the missing colonists and they ended up by the nuclear fusion reactor). Which means pistol rounds. Explains how that can hold 99 rounds
Film logic. It looks cool. Gotta say, a huge drum mag for the pulse rifle would not have gone amiss in the film, although that would probably have had 400 rounds in it or something ridiculous like that.
If this was made of aluminum and carbon fiber composites, it would make sense. The whole thing should weight no more than 6 pounds. Otherwise: It's too bulky and heavy.
If this scene was written today in 2023 Michael Biehn would have barely started even showing Ripley how to even hold the gun when Ripley quietly snatches the gun out of his hand and in a flashy display of power, shows him how she is already quiet proficient with military grade hardware and don't need no man to explain to her how to shoot bugs....She also would be a genius tactical commander and a natural born leader who is *NEVER* wrong unless it's to another woman and is able to lead his own troops even better then he can even though she is a civilian with zero combat training...All because she was born with a vagina and it's a movie made in 2023
Funny how I never caught that 'pulse' meant ELECTRICAL pulse ACTION, not pulse in that it had anything to do with an energy weapon. No, it just means electrical pulses touch off each round instead of a hammer.
