I'm just going to say what everyone else is thinking. We want to see these TEMPS underload with and without throttlestop...let's see this new cooling system in real life gaming applications.
That will all be in the review. I always do stock temps in the review but will undervolt in the deep dive video. I also agree temps on the x15 is probably going to be rubbish compared to this just like the m15r4 was compared to m17r4
@@MashITTech yess please after yesterday's fail that lenovo calls its legion 7 launch, all I have hope for is this x17 to have good thermals. I believe this 11800h is close in performance to desktop 8cores, so it all depends on if this "proprietary cooling solution" can cool those toasty cores and that hulking 3080. If thermals are bad with 3070, they are going to be shit with 3080 😂
Thanks for the quick review! Maybe test the thermal later? In the cyberpunk 2077 performance video posted from Alienware's official account, the GPU was 82 degree at 60 fps, and that's a little too high imo.
@@MashITTech I think many people are waiting for a review video to decide whether or not to buy it, and you will be the first one reviewing the X17 if not more. Everyone is on you lol!
Thank you mate! Ordered the x17 and x15 on release and have been waiting like a child waits for Xmas for this to arrive 😂 expect plenty more videos as I get some hands on time with it
Can’t wait to see what the thermals will be on these. I watched a little bit of the Alienware presentation of the X17 and the temps on that one were ABYSSMAL. Temps were consistently reaching 90+ degrees on the CPU (not even half load), and the GPU even reached its thermal limits. Hopefully your units will fare better.
Oh wow, that sounds terrible! I will be doing stock temps in my review but as always I will do a deep dive to try and improve the temps. I managed to make a massive difference to the temps on the r4 with a few simple tweaks
Perhaps it depends on the person, having used several units in the line up, I found the prior M17 R4 best of the fan noises. A hum, rather than a high pitched whine.YMMV.
@@MashITTech I hope it is not as bad as in the m17R3 and R4. In certain RPMs the FAN whistle was unbearable. As far as I can see the big fans are the same as in the R4. Looking forward for your comparison. I don't want to have a "vacuum cleaner" again ;)
Way to knock it out of the park! I just placed an order for the same exact setup and have been frantically looking for reviews. Initial impression on temps vs the m17r3/4 variants? Looking forward to the full review!
Been waiting for someone to review one of these since my BestBuy order on June 5th. I can't believe it's taking so long for reviewers to get these in hand. Please put everything else on hold and get videos out for this unit today! FYI, Just Sub'd and waiting!!!!
Haha, the only stops I am having is for coffee to keep me going! It takes me longer than a day to make a review but I am hoping I can get it out at some point tomorrow 👍
The Alienware 17 inch gaming laptops have come a long way since the M17x from 2009 which came in at: Dimensions | height x width x depth (in mm): 54 x 406 x 320 ( = 2.13 x 15.98 x 12.6 in) Weight | 5.75 kg ( = 202.83 oz / 12.68 pounds), Power Supply: 1.08 kg ( = 38.1 oz / 2.38 pounds) The X17 model is well and truly light-years ahead of its much older brother. Nice unboxing video, thumbs up.
Congrats on receiving it soo fast!! Wow. Great first impressions. The x17 seems like a great step up for Alienware in many ways (except the keyboard :D hehe) .
That's a real heavy boii alright. Reminds me of last year's Dell G7 7700. I'm mostly curious in thermals seeing how this newer liquid metal-ish works wonder with quad fans (maybe not as much as people cry out to be). Also wonder if there's not any MUX. Such a waste. Otherwise this is by far the cleanest looking Alienware laptop ever. I don't remember the last time Alienware looks this clean. Hats off to Dell for such nice looking design.
Nice video man🔥🔥. Can you clarify whether the 4k 120hz model has a mux switch? Dell has disclosed that only the 1080 300hz has advanced optimus but nothing about mux
The first x17 unboxing in RU-vid ever! Well done, don't know how you managed. Can't wait to see the thermals!!!!! And really looking forward x17 4k 3080 review!!!!! Does it have a mux switch??
sorry I didn't order the 4k version, I actually ran out of money having ordered the X15 and 3070 X17 so had to just settle for the 165hz panel again. When we recoup some money I will try and get one in.
Would love to see the battery life on this and then comparison with 3080, still confused should I wait for 360hz panel or go for 165 without MUX. And also is the lighting less for non-cherry version or not, may be comparing with r5 cherry keyboard?... As always perfect video, Keep it up.
You legit got the X17 before anyone else holy! Have been waiting for a long time for this one xD.... My only questions now would be if the 165hz is worth it without advanced optimus and whether the 4K variant has optimus enabled by default. My main concern right now is battery life as I'll be travelling a lot with this laptop. I'm assuming the fullHD 360Hz panel with advanced optimus would provide 4-6 hours with light use.. If that also proves to be true for 4K then that's where I'll be betting my money I suppose.
torn between this and x15. lots say x17 is more worthy. but i just love the 15 size. can't wait for more video from you to help me in making decision. Love from Malaysia
@@MashITTech yeah, I am just watching, probably will need a year to save up the money, but looking forward to the review, this review was awesome as well.
I am aiming for the weekend. I am going to need all day today just testing/benching to be able to fully cover the performance of the laptop. Don’t worry, I have stocked up on coffee so will get it out ASAP
I see many people have written a lot of stuff so I’m going to put down a couple of things which are minor but would be interesting to see: 1) can you try putting this into a standard 17 inch laptop sleeve to see if it fits? This might be more relevant for the X15, 2) how smudge resistant is the laptop? Do you have any Cheetos to test that out? 3) how do I install a second SSD and what type should I get? Thank you and keep up the good work!
Alienware have gone to shit... no MUX, no AGA, 1Rx16 memory, extra gear required to fit a 3rd party m.2, 17 inches but no 2.5inch drive bay... and with the astronomical asking price?? what a joke... trying to compete with a mac book for thickness but with that weight why even make it so thin? Not as featured or as powerful as DTRs from Metabox, and no where near as portable as a Razer... Simply compromises in every direction. Great unboxing video, very comprehensive, this is the benchmark for an unboxing!
The R4 is still a very formidable gaming laptop. If you got it for a good price and you tweak it ( I have number of videos on how in case you are not sure) it will still game with the best for the next few years
If possible, please do a sustained load long session test. I intend to use this for gaming and media consumption. It would be helpful to see if it can keep temps down while running games and a youtube vid/web pages simultaneously for a long period of time (4 or so hours). I plan on going for the i9- 3080 spec but if the thermals are not overloaded on the i7 then it should be close enough.
Ordered one myself also intend on using it with my HDMI 2.1 tv. Question I have is with the air intake above the keyboard would it be detrimental to run the laptop with the lid closed?
It will certainly have some impact but I will test it out for you and let you know. I always do a tweaking video once I have had the laptops a while, I may be able to tweak it enough that it still runs fine closed 👍
All Dell laptops all of them have battery and charger issues . I bought also M17 and when I disconnect the charger while I playing games the game start lagging and when I connect the charger back everything is fine all my ex dell had the same issue always has issues of battery . Such a shame for 4800$ and had issues
Unfortunately this is expected behaviour on all gaming laptops as the battery cannot discharge enough ampage to game a full speed so the system throttles down to a level where the battery can cope. Plus at full speed you would deplete the battery in minutes!
@@zichaowang8617 I respect your subjective opinion. It’s values are differently relative to every individual. For me, it’s perfect for what I want/need especially since I already have a high end gaming PC and I’m not looking to get maximum performance from a gaming laptop that I’ll be using on the go. It’s well rounded, aesthetically pleasing, and capable of sufficient/great gaming performance for its form factor.
I was about to order this laptop a few days ago since it looks and is so nice, but changed my mind because I believe that often the new flagship models are often prone to failure and issues which will be fixed on the next model which is probably going to be my next laptop. I finally ordered the Dell Alienware m15 R6.
R5 with 3060 is going for 1370$, which is a good deal in this market. But the screen is 165hz fhd, and the ssd is 512gb. I guess this year will be the year of compromises. I wish I replaced my 7 year old laptop last year :(
I’ve really looked forward to this, you really put the review out there quickly, amazing job ^^ I wonder if the 3080 version with the same 165hz panel has a mux
I wanted to get one but didn't know how long it take to arrive. Some reason R4 estimated delivery was AUG and X17 was mid July, plus I wanna see peoples thoughts impressions before I click buy
Can't wait to see your review, definitely curious about thermals on this out of the box, it's criminal when they launch computers thermal throttling out of the box lol.
Device that Intel use to show up 1. 11th Gen Tiger Lake U: Dell XPS 13 2. 11th Gen Tiger Lake H45: Alienware X17 3. 11th Gen Tiger Lakes H35: ASUS TUF Dash F15 These are what I found when watched their videos previously
Be interesting to see the temperatures because it's so slim I like the white but I don't like the black what's inside also nice review keep up the good work number one tech Reviewer
You’re awesome! Thanks for uploading I don’t like that it’s two tone now, and that they removed the numpad on the keyboard.. I’ll still probably buy it anyway but that is a real bummer
On the back of the case, how many inches are there between the two innermost columns of vent holes? Would you mind measuring for me? Mine arrives July 8, and I need to choose a stand to elevate this beauty. Thanks for another great video!
Great review chap, I think a lot of people have the mobile work and play need especially as travel opens up. Could you do a side by side comparison/review of the xps 17 and the x17, I've been looking for this review everywhere, as imho in the UK for work, Dell has the only reliable customer service if you buy the next day full cover. I think a lot of people would be drawn to the channel if you do.
@@MashITTech This is the one I got - www.bestbuy.com/site/alienware-x17-r1-17-3-360hz-fhd-gaming-laptop-intel-core-i7-16gb-memory-nvidia-geforce-rtx-3070-1tb-ssd-white/6464985.p?skuId=6464985 But now I gotta wait for them to ship it, no ETA on that.
I tend to lean towards 15 laptops since I don't really care for the extra size and the keyboard area often looks better and more full on the smaller sizes imo. I often contemplated getting the x15 after it was announced but already had a m15r5 on it's way to me. All I can say is that at the price I got it for and the fact it uses an AMD chip along with fully decked specs that I am extremely happy. I will say that these newer ones definitely look nice and the cooling looks promising but with some software tweaks and setting changes I get amazing thermals with no sacrifice to performance. Also the full black just looks nice imo. Those lights though are super cool. In the end for similar specs to the m15r5 it would have cost between $500-600 more and that is without the mechanical option that isn't offered on configurations rn. I think there's often a sweet spot for quality of life, cost efficiency and practicality. This laptop meets all my needs for gaming and school and was reasonably priced. I would not have been more comfortably spending any more then I did on a laptop, because at a certain point you might as well be buying a tower instead. The m15r5 wins out on this one for me. Someone mentioned already that this is 1st gen of this new design architecture, it's possibly there may be unforeseen issues since it's so new.
Yep, that is very true. I find all alienware laptops need a little tweaking and I always end up doing guides for each model as out of the box Dell always lets them run sooo hot! The m15r5 is a new idea for Dell making a slightly more affordable alienware and the $500-600 is a good saving
I will compare this model with the m17r4 if that's ok, I have a matching config to compare it. I will do an X15 vs m15r4 after (hope that is what you are after?)
Do you recommend me getting the x17 with a 3080 and a 360hz fhd display with an i9 11th gen or the m17 r4 with a 3080 and a 360hz fhd display with an i9 10980 or a rog strix scar 17 360hz 3080 Ryzen 9?
Thanks mate.I will be comparing with the m17r4 first as this model replaces that model then I can compare with the m15r5 (but it might be better if I use the x15 when it arrives?)
Yes was waiting for this! Man that must be the sexiest laptop available today. Are you gonna get the 🔥 i9 3080 version of this? That's the one I want to see if Throttlestop makes an actual difference with undervolting. I'm holding up to my M17 R3 and promised that if I was gonna spend 3k on another computer it MUST be a desktop but this thing is just to sexy! Waiting for you to tear it apart with tweaks to see how hard can it be pushed.
I have the i7 3080 on the way. Will try and get the i9 soon but I ran out of money :( still benching at the moment and the CPU is pulling 100w with no problem on cinebench without underplot so think there is potential for the i9
I sent my M17 R4 back because of issues, they are giving me the X17 I don't know how I should feel about it haha. Atleast it has the cherry keys and TB4!
Well the performance is better on the X17 and the cooling is better but keyboard and speakers were better on m17r4, dell like to give with one hand and take away with the other
do you mind comparing the thermals of this to the razer blade pro 17 as well? I am highly interested in that one as it has 4 fans as well. I wonder if the 11th gen intel runs any quieter.
not necessarily, it depends on which SSD you buy some run hotter than others. I would install the SSD and then monitor the temps. If it runs hot then order a plate
Speakers seem pretty lack luster. I have a laptop that has a 750 gpu (that's how old it is) with speakers that I forgot to change to the TV when watching a movie. Didn't even notice the sound was coming from the laptop and not the TV, they were that good.
Hey David, thanks for the video, appreciate it. I reached out to Dell UK online chat to verify whether the RTX 3080 variant 165hz Full HD Display is also connected to the IGPU. They said the display is connected to the dedicated GPU. Hope you can confirm this when reviewing the RTX 3080 variant.
If you check the time stamps I show the internals. I am pleased to say the memory and ssd’s can be upgraded. Only the WiFi card is soldered on and you are not likely to change that anyway
Dave, well done on getting a review out, great to watch, and regarding the m15 love to hear the rants to Dell. So thumbs up to you. Can I ask what you are currently using on the daily laptop wise? Just to add a quick upgrade to that system for £9.99 extra you can turn the 512gb to 1tb and + £30 you can turn 16gb ram to 32gb on the dell configurator. Ive gone and purchased the Alienware x15, I've gone for the cool side of things i7 11800h with a rtx 3070 due to x15 being smaller and thinner I do wonder if it'll get toasty, I'm still deciding, since i could return it but, I wonder if the razer 14, asus flow x13 would be more ideal for portability, style/stealth look, and the preffered AMD cpus.
Hi Nick, when I first purchased this model (on launch day) there were loads of configs missing! I also have a X17 with 1tb and 32gb on the way as you mentioned. I am hoping the 32gb have X8 ram instead of the X16 in the stock config. I also have an X15 base model on the way so there will be a review of that model soon too. My personal gaming rig is an Alienware Area 51m R2 with 10700 and 2080 super! I don't need portability and I am always plugged in so I wanted the most power I could get. I love the 51m and feel it is a really underrated machine
@@MashITTech ahh... ok understood. Does the x15 you're getting have 32gb? as i'd be interested if it has the x16 with less bandwidth issues too, because then that'd mean I'm likely to get it? Oh for sure! A51, is what I based my PC Specialist (Clevo P775dm3-g) laptop on, a while back and only went with PC Specialist at the time because budget was friendlier, and a couple more options.
@@MashITTech Oh and lastly because Dell's sales can't help and suggested i talk to Tech dept, which isn't live chat. maybe you could help? The Keyboards the Alienware X-Series thin keyboard Alienware mSeries. Have you tried either of these out? i was after the mechanical Alienware CherryMX but x15 is thin so i understand why that isn't there, so the question is what is the difference between the two keyboards stated above? hope you can help Dave, cheers.
The alienware m series keyboard is the standard non mechanical keyboard that dell have been using since the M15/17 r2. It is a deep travel island style keyboard and probably my favourite gaming laptop keyboard made. (You can check my previous R3 or R4 m17 videos where I talk about the keyboards). I am not sure what the new X series thin keyboard is yet as we haven't got our hands on one yet. But beware it only comes in US ANSI layout and if you are used to UK ISO keyboards then you may have a hard time switching
