THANK YOU. YES. SOMEONE FINALLY SAID IT!!! I read the books and wasn't really a fan of darklina. Mostly because he was a bit more forceful I think and she gave in a bit. And on Netflix, he seems like a love sick puppy. Honestly I still don't like him as much. But I still love Mal and Alina😊. And they're always meant to be together! And I don't mean that as just a shipper, I mean it as someone who has read the books and if anyone knows what I'm talking about then yes I'm talking about THAT. What mostly happened in the third book.

@@starry_archer3931 originally, it was meant to be an enemies to lovers book. It literally said on the covers "a pure heart, a dark soul, a love that will last forever" It wasn't always meant to be Mal, but LB switched positions and he got endgame

@@vcat724 😮Ohhh really? That's honestly interesting. And to be honest, I'm kind of glad that the author made the change cause I still love Mal and Alina. However, I wonder how the story would be if the Darkling wasn't so fixated on his goal and ended up choosing Alina instead. That would be interesting to read.

@@vcat724 also I think I've read someone's comment that said that LB meant Darkalina to be a representation of a toxic relationship. Similar to what the author had gone through. I'm not sure if it's true or not, so if I'm wrong I'm sorry😓

@@starry_archer3931 That is not true at all, it's a fandom lie that keeps getting passed around, sadly. They are NOT based on LB's past relationship. She points out that they are problematic, but she says readers are free to ship whoever they want and when she was younger she would have shipped darkling as well. She's said "I am not into shaming or villifying ships"

@@beatricetassinari7678 bro they really did us dirty with that scene😭😭😭. It was my favorite in the book!!! I haven't really seen the show yet and have just looked at scenes, and already I see darkalina everywhere, and the darkling acting like a gentleman. I don't remember if he was like that in the beginning of the book. I think he was more curious and intrigued and wanted to test Alinas capabilities. And then ended up falling for her out of wanting and desire for her. Maybe even close to love. And I will admit that Mal and Alinas relationship was a bit rocky in the second book and in the beginning of the third. But they've always found middle ground with each other. With the darkling it was my way or the highway. That's why I didn't like it. And Mal truly cares for Alina and wants the best for her, regardless with what happens to him. Whether she's with him or not he wants her to happy. Even though he mostly just wants to be with her and just live happily he knows that they probably can't and is afraid to risk it. And alina feels the same way about Mal if something happens because they've known each other for so long. Sorry about my rant I just really love this book series😅. And I'll see the show soon

The darkling in the book is not in love with Alina, he's manipulative and I will never understand the ones who don't see what mal did for that girl, like... imagine being 17 and loving a girl so much you risk your life to follow her everywhere. He has the absolute right to be mad sometimes! And also...who doesn't make mistakes?!

@@Alt-yg5ng yeah, I agree with what you said about how it’s basically showing his POV from the book. But the show also removed a lot of his angsty attitude (and removed that winter fete scene between him and Alina) and his personality just seems more wholesome right now?

@@Alt-yg5ng I agree with Alina not being a reliable narrator and it sucked that we only got to read from her POV. My heart broke when I read Mal’s letter. Don’t get me wrong, I like Mal. But still, that doesn’t mean Mal never said the angsty things he said in the book to Alina tho 😅

@@jaceyjayceereads3406 I liked that they showed Mal as a human having human reactions. Made him more relatable. He would get mad or upset, but in the end, he was the only one always staying by her side.

In fact it's strange that they cutted the kiss after the "but I see you now" which is present in the book.

@@pxtrat um idk if you're asking me to show them how toxic it is in the books?? But if you are then gladly. The darkling only saw Alina as the key to his success at first. And he let her do things that she thought she was capable of because he was intrigued and curious with what the sun summoner can do. But then he merely fell for Alina not out of love but out of desire and lust. Because he wanted to control her, and make her his. Mentally and physically. That's why he wanted to make her queen so that she can stay by his side, and that he can make sure that she never leaves. If that's his idea of love then that's very messed up. I mean he gave her the collar so that it can be easy to control her power, and essentially control her. I hope this helps. Right I forgot to add that the Darkling has baggage. Being lost in his own power driven to madness and then finding one person that could share it, can get out of control. Because if she is like him, then he is not alone. But at the same time he doesn't really love her. He just doesn't want to be alone in his darkness. And since she represents the light he views that as like yin and yang. Forever intertwining. However there are flaws to that. Because he was still lost in his power to control. And that's why the relationship didn't really work out. Not saying the darkling isn't a bad character but he is actually beautifully written with his character and his role as the tragic villain. Now I'm done.

I get why you dislike this particular aspect, I'm not a big fan of it either and I totally see how it came off like self-harm to you. But removed from our modern context this means something completely different from what we think self-harm is. Alina does this, not as a romantic gesture (because they were children) but in an effort to stay in the only home she knows with the person she's closest to. It is also an effort to repress her own potential which was not good for her, but the season shows her overcoming this. It's not something Mal knew about or approves of. She does not have a mental illness that led to this. I'm so sorry that this gave you a panic attack, I hope warnings for potential triggers are more clear in future. ❤️

@@ashy1587 thanks but I just watched e6 last night with a friend and when Alina told mal that she did cut her self to stay with him he smiled and was happy it's I can't watch those two anymore why didn't they just fallow the books in this part don't they understand what romanticizing self harm could do

Alina cutting her hand to stay with mal didn't really bother me, because they were children and it was understandable that as an orphan she didn't want to be separated from him. But now as an adult it's getting weird. What does bother me is her codependency on mal. The only time she became her own character was in ep 5, she knew who she was and what she wanted but after the revelations she reverted back to her old self. Sad.
