I played his version of Chan Kithan when my love walked down the aisle at our wedding. Teared rolled down my eyes with his music and the love of my life in that wedding dress! This man has a special place in my love story. Fun fact: Our dating started with me introducing her to Ali Sethi's songs and explaining all the sher-o-shayari behind it!
Bhai first 5 minutes me Dil choo Liya. We need more people like you. Great interview!! Btw big fan of your singing. I keep listening you in loops. Thanks!
How did I miss this interview up until now.. I can listen to him sing AND talk for hours and maybe a lifetime. I wish he could be my friend/professor/partner fir life. Uff ✨
A lot of respect to Anupama ji for doing interviews with artists across the border. We need to break this barrier between us and it is people like you that can make it happen.
It's a breath of fresh air to see a young, popular South Asian artist who is a public intellectual, can speak in academic language, is politically woke and unabashed about it. Only Varun Grover comes to mind from the Hindi film industry.
Ali Sethi is precious and must be protected at all cost. His music and his insta live sessions are the reasons I've been able to keep my mind sane in the past year and a half. Love and respect for this gem of a person! 🌻❤️
One of the most articulated, inquisitive and knowledgeable guy who knows how to theorize his music, academically as well as conceptually. By creating music, he is not only doing his job as a musician, but he's also situating his stuff in the border debates of south Asian musical traditions. It will help the connoisseurs to admire the music as a living reality and a repertoire amidst the sociopolitical scene. He took his music beyond the generally accepted notion of music as entertainment, listening him one understands music as a formidable and inseparable dimension of philosophy
I feel so ignorant already. Coz, only one month ago from now I didn't know who Ali Sethi was. But then my RU-vid algorithm played a beautiful trick and I got introduced to this amazing artist. His music was gradually growing on me (still is) as his experimental touch to the Ghazal is something new to me. On the other hand, I am absolutely smitten after watching this interview. It was so enriching and real. Ali Sethi is an asset for not only South Asia but also for the whole music industry in general. His thoughts are so refreshing which many of us young people resonate with presently but can't get an outlet to manifest, but Ali is sharing our thoughts perfectly through his platform. Sending lots of love to the FC team and to Ali Sethi himself for this amazing and enriching TED talk like session 😌. PS. Being a Bengali myself, it made me extra happy to know that Ali happens to have come across some of the great intellectuals of present day Bengal. Yeii.😁🌼 Peace and love.
I love people who have multidimensional intelligence. he’s able to draw from and link so many different spheres of life and art forms as well as intellectual life. love hearing exchanges with people like him.
Ali Sethi is the most beautiful person!!! I fall deep in love with him everytime he talks. It's so hard not to!!! I wish our countries knew how much love we hold for each other and bond over it. Ali Sethi's music is one of the bridges.
Exactly my feeling. Although I couldn't have put it so beautifully :) His social commentary, analysis, and music - everything is so poetic and intelligent.
Dear Anupama maam if this is possible can you pls bring also Bilal Maqsood Faisal Kapadia and Ahad Nayani. Trust me ur servers might crash with overload. plssssssssssssssssmaam plsssssss.
I have a couple of things to express: 1. Loved this interview in its entirety. Genuinely. 2. I want to thank FC for taking such leaps and conducting interviews. I don't want to use word 'brave' but it is courageous that you are doing it. That too with such grace and panache. 3. I've admired him as a singer/composer. Today I saw another side, more personal and humane. Completely in awe. Thank you guys! Great interview ❤️
It's too bad that in modi's reign we Indian's are feared to say what Ali Sethi had said in the beginning of the interview. Art is one of the few mediums where even the extremist's failed to separate us. Hope one day all the desi folks become one.
Yaar, aise log kahaan milte hai aaj! Floored by the substance in Ali’s arguments, the eloquence, and the rootedness in South Asian art. I mean, look at the genuine and unabashed passion with which he describes the opening sequence of Aa Jaan-e-jaan at 27:25. He makes liking desi music cool, which it really is. Amazing interview.
I have watched almost all FC interviews, and I might be a little biased here, but this is the most tasteful interview I have ever seen! Appreciate the length of this one
@@farwaismail Lol no and i don't know you either , it's just I've seen you so manytimes in Facebook people you might know notification . It's strange to you see you even here as well 😀
Many of us do, it all depends on how you were brought up or the environment you were brought up in. You cant imagine, on a current affairs program a guy from India will be bad-mouthing Pakistan, and the same for the Pakistani throwing filth on the other side; and then in near future, you see them together and an uncle says, Puttar Jii aena nuu jandae o ae bedi saab nae aena nae auriga dae andar teeji dukaan kholi ae. and that Pakistani says yaar o pyaaz da ikk phaera lawa laiye india tu
I am blown away by his views say honest views. His talent, genuine openion and respect for our culture and art is mind blowing. Thank you Anupama ji for this treat.
I had never heard of Ali Sethi before this interview and I am floored!!! I am a total fan. May we have more like him that we can undo the toxicity that is South Asia today. Love does conquer all and he is showing us how. I am enjoying the bridges he has built. Thank you Ali and FC! Inshallah.
As a Canadian, I'm so impressed with his liberal views and his courage to speak about the current conservative culture in South Asia. I can definitely see his western education shining through and he has so much more to give the world than just music. Most celebrities in both India and Pakistan would be too apprehensive to talk about what he just did. Lots of respect!!
It's not his western education that is shining through. This has been the ethos of Sufi culture and south asian culture for the most part. The current conservative trend does not reflect the centuries of very liberal thought which was prevalent in the region! This is not to say that this region has always been a paradise, but analyse the history of the place and you will see intolerable is not the rule!
@Tara That's what he's saying. Change the fukin garbage mentality and spread love. Someone has to initiate. Phele tu plehle tu mein train na Nikal jaye🤔
I have watched each and every video of FC, but I never felt such urgency to go to the comments write. With these words, I am sending all the love my heart can send to Anupama ji for doing this interview and to Ali ji for existing
@Foot long achcha achcha aap yaha apni trolling karvane aae hain , dekhie yaha baat ek kalakar ki ho rahi hain jiske chahnewale puri duniya main hain , so apne attention paane k bure irado ko yaha naa laae, and rahi baat kashmir ki toh vaise mangne se nahi milta janab , vaise agar aap pakistani ho toh jitna aapke paas hain usse khush rahe aur hume yaha rehne de , take care
@Foot long hahahahaha , you are funny , pak army rock indian soldiers everyday, great joke buddy , that's why your country lost war with india 4 times , Again saying just chill , let artist do there job (entertainment) and let government / army do there job , Get a life brother/sister . Take care and enjoy the good music
What a lovely message ... easy ho jayen! Why can't we move past the age old prejudices and embrace all! Beyond boundaries, religions and all these stupid boxes...What a lovely ambassador of peace Ali Sethi ❤❤❤
Wah Bhai!!! What more can I add, this man even enthuse a tone deaf, non south Asian into wanting to seek more information about the ghazals, rags! Thank you Anupama🌹
I love how Anupama ask the articulate questions and choose these people who I truly truly adore, thank you so much for bringing Ali Sethi here, if possible talk to Sanam Saeed as well and Ahad Raza Mir
Yess! Anupama, please please get Sajal Ali and Ahad Raza Mir, specially now because their much awaited web-series filmed against the background of Indo-Pak conflict is releasing on Zee5 this month.
Thank you @Film Companion for this . Kinda perfect ending to my Sunday . Love his music . Please interview more Pakistani artists if its not too much of a ask :)
In my opinion Ali Sethi is to music what Nicola Tesla is to science. Loved listening to his abstract expressionism and being a Pakistani and married to an Indian, and having two lovely kids with Indian nationality and many close Indian friends in my life I can relate to his vision on love beyond borders. And Ali “Hum dekhenge, Lazim hai ke hum bhi dekhenge, woh din ke jiska vaada hai, jo loh-e-azzal mein likha hai, hun dekhenge.” This world was created out of love, for love and someday there will be no hatred, only love, all around us, everywhere! Insha Allah!
I don't think he is a singer. There is a complete philosopher inside this body, who uses his voice to convey his message. What an interview. Learned so much about life. Thanks to Anupama for this epic session.
Wow! Best 49 minutes of my life that I have spent on listening to this absolutely mesmerizing talk. What a delight it was seeing Ali Sethi talk about South Asian culture, censorship, presenting his no filter thoughts on bollywood music and everything else. Also kudos to Anupama! I totally love how she frames relevant and just right questions to ask from the answers of the interviewee.
Thanks Anupama for this wonderful interview with such an erudite perspective of music ,it’s nuances and the South Eastern trend of cultural thought and dialogue which should be revived at all costs . Thanks Ali for putting into words which so many of us feel but have no ability to change. Kudos to both for this Celebral entertainment
Oh my goddd....I was waiting for this ...Ali Sethi is too pure for this world ...I could pick his brain for hours ....thank you film companion...do make him a regular! Love you Sethi Saab❤️
Ali Sethi has lot of expression in his conversation... I think he inherited legacy of his parents. In music he is doing wonders..He is truly secular in his thinking. Vo din door Nahin jab aaj ki generation dono mulkon ko ikatha Kar hi degi...
Is this even real? Well done Film Companion! I hope more people in India get acquainted with his music. He is perhaps one of the finest from this generation!❤ And he says he goes to Amitav Ghosh's house for dinner and that he is a dear friend of his!😇😇
Thanks so much for getting him on Film Companion! What a treat to listen to him. 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 Great interview & he's a wonderful speaker. Please consider interviewing Bilal and Faisal of Strings/Coke Studio fame, Shafqat Amanat Ali, and Shuja Haider as well. All awesome interview subjects from across the border. 🙂
"ख़बर ए तहय्युर ए इश्क़ सुन न जुनूं रहा न परी रही न तो तू रहा न तो मैं रहा जो रही सो बेखबरी रही.. " Ali Sethi, a hugely gifted singer, has sung this Siraj Aurangabadi ghazal with so much mastery apart from the Maestro Mehdi Hassan's "रंजिश ही सही.. " (Ahmad Faraz), " गुलों में रंग भरे बाद ए नौबहार चले.."( Faiz) n others. Thanks a lot Anupama Ma'am for the lovely interview n exploring a new territory!
You use art like a wand, expect magic to happen and the artists, nature, the art and the feelings it arouses, shall come forth the magic to be conspired. Just hope and heal from within. Thank you ma'am for this wonderful interview.
“NEW AGE HEALER”, yesssss you are and too much at the same time with your music, the kind of effect it has on us. Blessed to have you who is not even an artist but way more than that when it comes to the amount of love you spread. May God always bless you. Love from India 🙏🏼❤️
26:40 He's so right. The disappointment we feel these days with what is being produced in Bollywood except for some fair few is F*CKING REAL. and when he was talking about it, I felt that disappointment too 😔🥺
This is just... Amazing. Listening to Ali Sethi's music and listening to him just talk about so many variety of things, both have the same depth. I am stunned
He has been a saviour all through the lockdown. If anyone asks me my top 5 memories of this time period, it's definitely Ali Sethi's live sessions. Thank you Film companion for this interview, you brought him closer to us😊
Thank you for interviewing this guy. He is not only reviving ghazal genre back to life but taking it to another level. I am so glad I found him on RU-vid and been listening to his songs repeatedly. He is an intelligent and articulate person.
The way Ali talks, it's just so captivating, as captivating as his music. Your music makes life worth living, and aapki baatein- they give me hope. I cannot thank you enough for your existence, Ali
The Best Thing I have seen on Film Companion, there is really some other good stuff too but this one is far better.Anupama Chopra loves s thanks ❤️❤️🇧🇩🇧🇩
If thinking makes you more attractive...there is no way Ali Sethi is not synonym to it !!!He is by far one of the most aware , intellectual...and passionate singer in the South Asian community...I feel so ignorant of not knowing his music earlier...wish celebrities like him existed more, like him on both sides...wish him all the best to his future endeavours..PASOORI brought me here...and loved that song so much... thankyou FILM COMPANION for this amazing interview...please interview him once again and Shae Gill too !Thankyou💓
What a brilliant artist. It’s a delight to watch an artist like Ali Sethi go so deep into both music and poetry. More power to him. 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 thank you FC 👍🏽
This man is the true example living his truth, doing what he loves! The passion that pours out of his words when talking about what he loves is beautiful.
The love, care and perhaps grief that pours through Ali for our subcontinent. It's therapeutic, @Ali Sethi, dil se shukriya. Probably the most inspiring interview on your channel @Film Companion.
This is a really amazing interviews. Such an amazing personality intellectual Ali sethi. People like Ali sethi should be there in india. Please do interview of Mira Sethi
Thank you so much for doing this, Anupama Chopra. There is so much to ponder on our collective composite culture. Ali is so real and so positive. Such joy
I can hear him for hours. How could I miss such talented gem person for so many years. His education is visible throughout the conversation. Also his parents knowledge reflects in him. I think he is most underrated talent. He deserves more more appreciation and recognition than he is getting.. I wish Ali Sethi more more success and happiness.
Relating hard with ali sethi when he says about a mental jail in fascist regims of india pakistan. The freedom in truly democratic countries abroad is priceless, makes one to aspire to move therein future.
Just one correction Aa Jane Ja is not composed by RD but rather by the extremely celebrated musicdirector duo of Laxmikant Pyarelal, Movie Inteqaam(1969)
Lovely Interview. Wish Ali also explored more recent compositions like "Tum bilkul hum jaise nikle" by Fahmida Riaz, or "Shav-Vahini Ganga" by Parul Kakkar- the poem has taken India by storm. Maybe he should even try penning a ghazal!
You are an incredibly inspiring artist. Love the work you're doing. This interview was a treat to watch. Also, thank you, Ali, for entertaining us with your 'Instagram live' posts that are, not just a source of entertainment but also, a source of inspiration for citizens around the world and a platform that brings people from all walks of life together. Cheers, mate!
Ali Sethi is insanely intelligent and comes across as a layered and intellectual personality who can traverse and transcend boundaries and connect with people I hv the same feeling hearing Mira Nair btw both have studied in harward maybe that's the connection
Wow! This was incredible and magical and beautiful. Thank you so much Anupama and Film Companion, for this audio-visual treat to us, it was much needed. Much love to you guys.❤️
Wish there were more people like Ali Sethi who have the power of influencing ... There is such richness in different cultures and music ... the divide and unnecessary othering is just destroying the beautiful diversity
@@immammuddin5019 protecting what ? may be before pointing fingers at others people like you could spend few minutes in introspection ... and you will realise your blind spots no ... blind walls that you have put around you in the name of man made religion, culture and completely forgetting to be human and treating others as human
Religion is the root of all negativity around the world. Some men decided to write man made comic books and preach to illiterates and vulnerable people as word of a being that doesn't even exit and boom spread like wildfire among illiterstes.
haha why do i feel most of what he said went over Anupama's head and she just kept nodding. Btw don't know why i never came across this interview earlier! Will be watching the other half tomorrow.
By far the best interview ever! Spellbound by the artist and his art. Film Companion and Anupama Chopra doing great service to our nation and her art lovers👏👏👏
