We refit a spare wheel onto the Alko spare wheel carrier, the Alko spare wheel carrier is the most common type of caravan spare wheel carrier fitted to caravans.
Alko spare wheel carrier instruction:
If you have the Alko spare wheel carrier fitted to your caravan you need to make sure that the operation on the caravan spare wheel carrier is working, you also need to check that the tyre is in good condition and if needed to be fitted your spare wheel will get you out of trouble and back on the road.
If your caravan has been serviced the Alko spare wheel carrier should be checked and lubricated and also the spare tyre checked for damage and air pressure.
If you have not had your caravan serviced this is a good check to do yourself our video will show how to remove the Alko spare wheel carrier and how to refit with the tyre fitted. It is much easier to take the spare wheel from the carrier than to refit the alko caravan spare wheel carrier with the spare wheel fitted. We hope this will make refitting the spare tyre to the Alko spare wheel carrier a lot easier for you.

Took mine off and keep the spare just inside the door of the caravan for easy access. Lesson learned after following a friend while we were travelling to Cornwall and his caravan had a puncture. Lucky it was in the services. What a joke trying to get that spare wheel out and sliding it back in and that was two of us. Imagine on the side of the road trying to do this. You’d end up getting a bit savage.

Another great video. Love the outtakes, lol. Nothing wrong with how you said AL-KO.

Sir, you are a godsend.! My manual on a Swift Challenger basically informs me that it has a spare, after that you are on your own.

Nice video! One note: Wd40 is not an adequate lubricant, more a rust removing agent, it is advised to use grease or motorcycle chain spay instead, is is also not washed away that easy.

Nice and clear. Our van has the spare tyre stuffed in the inside locker and I was wondering where it should go!

Agree with other comments; WD40 is a water dispersant, it wont offer long term lubrication, your caravan maintainer will know this, Copper Ease is a good protector and lubricator for slides and threads.

I´m about to buy the same wheel carrier, so I do like that you showed us how to use it but please next time use some tissues/towels or whatever you have to protect the ground from the WD-40. It´s bad for the environment and can be slipperey for motocyclist later too.

Excellent video, I've just had word from the service mine is damaged, this gave me a great insight to how it works and what to lookout for. I can now go in with questions. I'm new to "vanning" I can now go armed with questions? Thanks.

Hi Mark, complete newbie here, and we have one of these on our caravan. What is the best method of securing the spare wheel against theft? Thanks
@thecaravanplace
@thecaravanplace Год назад
You can put a padlock on the black screw nut instead of the chain, but we have never heard or hasd any one steal one. 👍

What methods do you employ if it’s seized and won’t pull out ?
@thecaravanplace
@thecaravanplace 17 дней назад
Soak with wd40, then trying to work it back and forth after a day or so, they will normally come free.

@@thecaravanplace Thanks for your reply ! it’s just a tube in another tube isn’t it ? Can I drop the whole rack? looking at “ off side” if I remove the split pins, the whole thing should just pull to the “near side” and drop, then I should be able to refurbish….
@thecaravanplace
@thecaravanplace 17 дней назад
@@stevedoran3278 yes if you undo the 2 O/S split pins on the outside, once dropped as normal on the N/S and then it will slide off. Yes just 2 tubes, 1 inside the other. 👍

@@thecaravanplace 👍🏻 it’s an old van, doesn’t look like it’s been serviced for quite a while. But before I let it loose on the road, it has to be in as near as new condition as it could be before I would let my daughter, grandson and future son in law loose with it.

Great video! Imagine being in your 60's or 70's trying to do this at the side of the road. What a stupid design! My spare wheel stays under the bed near the axle. Just one thing WD40 is not suitable for that job.

Hmm something is not right here, my spare wheel carrier of the same brand goes out much more, saying you can put the wheel on it without going on your knees. Be aware, if you buy one, there are different types of length that will make your life much easier. This design is good, but the wrong one seems to be fitted here...
@mikemlw

I would never have one of those carriers there a very poor design and a pain to get in and out not just that but can lead to damage to the tyre side wall which could cause bulges. Best place for the spare wheel is inside the caravan.

I’m surprised that you just squirt WD40 vaguely at the bars - why not wipe dirt off first and then lubricate with a rag. Equally surprised that you didn’t tighten any of the buts up with a spanner. Finger tight isn’t tight enough, especially with Nyloc nuts!
@thecaravanplace
@thecaravanplace 4 года назад
Thanks for your comments, when doing the job on the ground not everyone will be able to get fully under the caravan to get to the rails, I'm fortunate that I actually could, but trying to cover most people who may not so thats better than nothing. A lot of the nuts aren't nyloc so again it's trying to cover it for everyone but yes if new nuts it would be a case of using a wrench to tighten. Thanks for watching and hopefully your comments help other people too.

I'd like to see this repeated by a 75 year old. I'm in OK condition for my age but lifting the wheel cradle back into place proved impossible without a series of levers. I was on my drive, I would have been stranded by the roadside.🤨
