On Ring Of the Hawk we always listen to the fans. Why is why this week Brodie Lee in All ELite Wrestling will be on the channel. I’ve never watched AEW before so this will be new for me. But the main question is shuv it or love it?
AEW used a lot of Jobbers during Covid to ensure they got pay checks while the indies were shutdown. It was a nice gesture to make sure people got paid and some exposure. Several people ended up with jobs in the various companies from doing this.
Honestly jobbers are great for the business in general because you can protect everyone who has to lose at the pay-per-view by having them still having Overall winning record on TV and indie guys get those paychecks
@@cassidypeterson3618 live in denial but we all lived through the Covid quarantine and remember what it was like. QT Marshall’s students filled in a lot. There were weeks we weren’t certain they were going to be allowed to do the show because of the rules. Like when Georgia officials showed up to try and shutdown production at QT Marshall’s Gym.
The whole thing with him being an asshole like not liking sneezing and stuff is actually a dig at Vince McMahon, as he's been known to hate when people sneeze and yawn around him.
Brodie attacked Cody after their TNT championship match and kayfabe put him in the hospital. That is why Dustin was fighting for Cody. It was pretty much a Dark Order vs Nightmare Family fued
@@Emperor_Kronk_TheIV it was, but since his character was an unhinged cult leader it worked in both regards; if you knew the stories of Vince's particularities you got it that way, but if you're like Markyd123 and didn't hear those stories, it made him look like a unhinged cult leader. Kingmidget71 is also correct, originally Matt Hardy was going to be the "Exulted One", but Brodie asked to be given the role instead because he wanted to help get those guys over. Messages Tony Khan shared after his death have TK suggesting Silver take on a "Stevie Richards" role to Lee's "Raven" and Lee even bought Silver matching ring gear for a bit they were going to do (Silver later wore the gear during his match on the Memorial show). Brodie Lee was class.
Evil Uno said on the latest episode of AEW Unrestricted that it was him and Stu Grayson that asked Brodie to be the Exalted One. He didn't think Brodie would do it since he had already been in a team in WWE in the Wyatt Family, but apparently Brodie was on board right away.
I thought he was a replacement for Marty Scurll after he made a string of unfortunate career decisions, beginning with not keeping it in his pants, middling with turning down going to AEW to stay with RoH and ending with not lawyering up. Though I might be misremembering the timing of all that. Regardless, I think Brodie was always going to do the intense McMahon inspired character, it was just adapted to the Dark Order.
@@planescaped from what I've heard, The Elite wanted it to be Marty, but like you said, and then Matt Hardy was asked, but he wanted to use the broken character, also probably because early Dark Order was so bad, and then Brodiw was given the role, and that was the only time they really shined, was having Brodie to help them
It was actually a reference to the Wyatt Family, the move you claimed was the Cross Rhodes(which requires the user to be behind the guy) is a different move from Sister Abbigail(Reverse STO)
@@MrSavageRain He said at the beginning of the video that he wasn't watching WWE around the time of the Wyatt Family run. So there's a good chance he doesn't even know who Bray Wyatt is at all.
The greatest thing he pulled in AEW was to make Dark Orders likable, he was the one who changed the direction of Dark Order and brought fan favourites of Dark order John Silver and Alex plus Anna. RiP Big RIG.
and now Tay Conti. -1, Taz, and Excalibur were killing me on AEW Dark's commentary last week. when Taz is playing the straight man ("Now you're gambling with a kid, X? What is wrong with you?!"), then you know you have comedy gold.
@@justinthunder6284 this day and age fanbases of anything get pissed off easy and to be fair marky said from the start he didnt watch aew or the segments , he just watched the matches blind , which is fine.
@@justinthunder6284 well part of what makes wrestling wrestling is the story and the build behind matches. Without the context i could see why Hawk would think the things he thinks. But if he watched the show week to week I think he'd enjoy it.
just watching his matches, you miss so many skits and backstage antics his group did. they started off really rough, but once he came in as the leader, the entire dynamic changed. he played an over-the-top parody of McMahon and all the followers were his "McMahon yes men" over the years. then there's Anna Jay and Tay Conti....
I really loved his run in AEW, it was a truly deserved last run in wrestling. Anyway, i cried so much when he passed away, it hitted me like Eddie's death. I was lucky enough to saw him live here in Italy at a WWE live event, he was soooo over! He's deeply missed.
Brodie Lee's matches were already pretty good but when you remember that he wrestled many of them with a deadly illness that affected his breathing the man's a fucking legend
Marky, I think you misheard the commentary. They put over how large Brodie is, not Cody. The story in the buildup to their rematch involved Cody putting muscle back on (15 lbs of muscle, not sure if that's kayfabe, but by the end of October Cody was in fact looking visibly more yolked lol) in order to give him more of a chance against Brodie. Also you completely skipped over the post match annihilation of Cody and the entire Nightmare Family. It was one of the best angles on Dynamite all year.
Doesn't change the fact Cody came back and beat Brodie when he had no business doing it. Entire thing put Cody over so he looked good and it took away from Brodie's squash of Cody earlier. Someone else could have and should have beaten Brodie.
@@denniswilliams6519 I would just say that, for me, Cody needed to get the belt back in order to drop it to Darby. That series of matches between Cody and Darby were not only great, but integral to the story of the rise of Darby Allin. And supposedly, the original plan wasn't even for Cody to drop the title at all. Tony Khan apparently was okay with Cody being off TV for a few weeks to film his show. But Cody insisted the right thing to do was drop the title, and he handpicked Brodie to be the deserving one to take it. So I think in the end it worked out really well for everybody.
@@JeremyBearimy913 I personally disagree and think Darby beating Brodie would have achieved the same effect without having Cody remove the effect of Brodie beating him in the first place by coming back so soon and defeating him to get the belt back. If anything all it did was remove the punch of Brodie's initial win.
@@Kas58223 so fuck? I don't need to "believe" anything because I know att the end of the day its wrestling I don't need to be crying because someone is small keep crying mark,
Brodie didn't just help The Dark Order, he helped the whole damn company, even Abadon, who only interacted with him once, he told her, possibly in a different way "Don't change, ever" that was the night the living dead girl signed to AEW, turning the women's division around for the better in my book.
I absolutely loved Mox vs Lee. It reminded me of watching TAZ vs Bam Bam as a kid. I loved Brodie’s whole AEW run and it honestly broke my heart when he passed. He was finally living up to his potential
Interesting little thing but a cult survivor once, said that the stuff with Brodie and the Dark Order was actualy a pretty accurate representation of what being in a cult is like. Make of that what you will
I loved Mr. Brodie's run. It was supposed to last longer. His TNT championship reign definitely would've lasted longer because he was the best champion.
Yeah, there are many stories of Vince reacting badly to someone sneezing in his presence Brodie worfing down meat was also a shot of Vince; many stories have him eating a steak or a meat wrap backstage while discussing things
I feel like if Brodie didn't join the dark order he would've been a top heel monster and put on great 1v1 matches but at least he put these guys over before his sad passing.
He was a top heel monster. First wrestler to kick out of the moreelevatedthanusual Paradigm Shift, losing only via submission without tapping out (tko?); he squashed everyone, including Cody. That's a monster heel
@@lolllololllo yea I'm talking about if he was just a single star. Sure most of his matches are Single matches but I think he would've been bigger as a single star who don't work with anyone. But I also understand why he wanted to be paired with the Dark Order.
@ً sell moves but do nothing a ref should like enforced rules, counts, or move weapons and shit like a broken table that has its legs still up in the ring. They're just there to count 3 and its stupid.
The TNT title is more meant to be a Showcase title. That’s why a lot of Midcard guys get competitive matches against the champion. It’s also meant to show that if you’re TNT champion, then AEW trusts you enough to keep the work rate of the title up.
"This is all about Dustin trying to seek redemption for Cody. But it's not as if Brodie did anything wrong, he just convincingly beat him!" Did you miss the part where he interrupts the guys trying to take Cody out, beat him up more, beat up his whole family, and inducted Anna Jay into the faction just so she could choke out Brandy? lmao. Nice vid tho
I don't envy you doing this one. Having to walk the line between people saying "Oh, you're just being soft because he's dead" and others saying "How can you be so mean to a dead guy". I think you did him pretty fair.
obscure suggestion: review ez money's ecw run. 18 televised matches in total from 2000-2001. he's the first wrestler i saw using the buckshot lariat and his ability to wrestle is underrated
You should have watched some of the Dynamite and BTE skits with The Dark Order and Brodie. They were magic together. It made Brodie more than a generic big monster and showed how much range he had. I think he leaves a much better wrestling legacy specifically because he was with the order
The "Cross Rhodes" spot you're talking about is the set up for Sister Abigail/Bray's finisher. He did that after Randy Orton destroyed the Wyatt Family in early 2017. Was a tribute to Bray then a dig.
"brodie lee has the world heavyweight title althou he's not actually the champion and he's taking on the real chamion who's jon moxley, a man who looks extremly unwell" bro i'm dead :)))
the reason brodie was giving colt the wins all the time was because colt hadn't won any matches at that point and brodie wanted him to join. so he gave him wins to build up his confidence and later to finally join the dark order, which was great since colt wasn't really doing anything.
It’s refreshing to see AEW content that isn’t either A) sucking them off for everything or B) shitting on them for everything. AEW like any wrestling company at any time is flawed, but that doesn’t mean they can’t be a fun show.
I love the commentary on the most popular small wrestlers. The curly girl and blue jean boy. Great video as always, you make some of the best content on RU-vid.
i genuinely don’t understand the “believability” complaint in wrestling. 95% of wrestling isn’t believable and we still accept that, but a small guy beating a bigger guy is somehow too much?
The reason I dont watch wrestling is because its not believable anymore, its not that we should be like oh we know its fake so let's ignore it, you watch it and act like its a movie and when there's a botch or something absolutely crazy its the same as seeing a batman fight scene from the 60s, yeah we know its not real, that doesn't mean we wanna see kenny omega fight a blow up doll and make it look like hes losing, we don't need teleporting wrestlers or for a song and dance to break out, you show anyone who doesn't watch wrestling that and they will obviously think what the fuck is this, its probably the reason why the older wrestlers are household names and nobody knows any wrestler who came after John cena left
RIP Brodie Lee! Also I had another thought for ROH, Steve Austin in ECW, it may just have to be a Patreon exclusive because he had only like 3 or 4 matches ala Steve Regal but his promos are legendary and in my opinion is where the stone cold character was invented
His match against Moxely is one of my favorite matches of the year. He came off as damn near unstoppable, as if the only way Moxely could even beat him was to damn near kill him
17:17 You clearly didnt watch what happened after Brodie Lee beat Cody for the TNT championship. He kept attacking him as Cody was being stretchered away
I would say sometimes they tell too many stories cause if you don't know all the history between wrestlers in AEW casuals will think there is no story cause you have follow it for a while to get what is going on. For example why Brodie was letting Colt win all the matches to boost his confidence (after his losing streak) and get him to officially join the Dark Order.
I started watching dynamite the week after Brodie debuted, it was amazing seeing him take a dead faction and make them some of the biggest baby faces on the roster, glad you liked his work💜
@@THM2008 i never noticed it until he was in AEW. In WWE, he seemed average among their whole roster. But then you see him against these guys and you realize this guy is huge and only looked smaller in WWE because their wrestlers are HUGE
@@THM2008 especially when he was in DX. Triple H is 6'4" and Road Dogg is 6'1" and X-Pac is 6'1" so Billy Gunn just blended in. I thought X-Pac was supposed to be TINY. I thought he was 5'10" or something.
@@lambdalambdalambda257 yeah you know Vince and his love for the really massive guys that's why Billy just blended in there 😂 he still looks amazing for his age though!
Mr brodie was a huge push man. He was happy just in a back roll and pushing everyone else up in the means of skills and promoting. Brodie will always be a true hero for me.
Brodie Lee was definitely someone who was taken from us way too soon. I've loved him since his days in WWE when he was with the Wyatt Family. He was insanely talented in the ring, and was an overall fantastic human-being. May he rest in peace. That said, you think maybe we can see Kevin Owens in NXT on Ring of the Hawk? He had less than 30 televised matches in NXT, not counting appearances he made on RAW/SD as the NXT Champion. Or does NXT not count as a separate entity from WWE?
Oh, and the whole thing with Colt and Adam Page etc... they were losing matches, Hangman was at his lowest, 'I'm a worthless drunk loser' point, Brodie was trying to recruit them by showing that with his help, they could be winners. That was the story.
It's kinda cool that you are watching this as someone totally new to AEW (and even to Brodie Lee in general) It's a fresh perspective. The sneezing thing was a reference to Vince McMahon.
I agree with all of your thoughts on this one. I wish Brodie had gotten to perform in front of crowds during his AEW run. such a shame. I'm "old" too when it comes to wrestling haha entertaining video, made me laugh a lot.
I’ve watched all of his matches already but honestly I wanted to see what MarkyD thought of them I may not agree with a bit of it but honestly I really like your commentary it makes all of this interesting
Only thing ill say is Evil Uno has earned his position. He's been wrestling for a long time as Player Uno back in Chikara so it was good to see him make something of himself. I can get why he might not be your thing but I like him as a talent.
I know this isn’t the most recent video, just rewatching, but noticed at the grading, there is a (p) next to mike awesome and real man’s man regal. What does it mean? I need to know!
*You should watch more AEW it is the most fan friendly and FUN wrestling company in the world and usually leaves you feeling GOOD at the end* (So in other words the exact opposite of WWE) RIP Brodie Lee and long live Negative One
@@michiel1162 he literally has to watch wrestling as a job, and he sounds like he's been watching for decades. Him getting moves wrong isn't the end of the world. but come on man, if you're gonna critique people in the business, at least sound like you know what you're talking about.
@@omegajef to be fair a lot of the indie guys in AEW use some moves that are rarely seen in WWE or even Impact for that matter. but yeah maybe your right, although i think youtube is more a hobby for markyd than a job
