​@@e.r.6147 cool little trick you can do is use Google to price out hang gliders lol. I'm just razzin ya. There's some pretty affordable ones out there! Just do your research! Oftentimes, as the saying goes, you get what you pay for!

You don't need to be rich or brave

If you can run downhill on a small bunny hill it will not get very much scarier than that if you start with learning foot launch first! And it is a whole lot of fun! First time you will achieve flying it will be about 1 or 2 feet above the ground and will feel like a success. From that point on, flying any higher will be under your control! The scariest part really is calling the flight school, making the appointment and going there the first day. If you can manage that, the chance is high you'll be happy you've done it for the rest of your life.

There are tons of crash videos on RU-vid if you search for them. There’s always a risk of injury with anything, but I do try to show in my videos that hang gliding can be fun and not scary/extreme

If I can chime in... dont know if you can read much and if reading helps much. These landings from Erika are really, really clean, I think not half of my landings are this good (but then again, it's probably me). In general, after doing a good approach (which is the basis for a good landing) you need to get on final, keep your speed, transition from the control bar to the side bars and then accelerate in this awkward position to compensate for wind gradient. But its a lot of things to think about: Body position, hands height at the bars, speed, wings level.... Speed is your friend, also while landing, I think thats key. Then ease-out, let the glider loose some energy, and push up (not front, up!). If you do it right, you land like this girl. If not, you may climb a bit more than you want (but keep arms high!!) and bomb down, no issue. If you dont keep pushing out, it will be a faceplant with the nose in the dirt. If you wait too long, you mush down and may not be able to run it out, also not that bad. But the worse is if you dont keep your wings level, there you can get into problems, I think that is the most important: Against the wind and wings leveled.

I think you about covered it for how to land :) I'd just add that lots of practice (including on training hills) and constantly videoing and critiquing your landings and others' landings helps for improving them. For new pilots, good instruction is key also to learn the technique and identify areas to improve

Thanks! Depending on the glider they weigh around 50 lbs (but they’re weightless when wind is holding them up). They’re a bit counterintuitive to learn at first so it generally takes a few months of lessons to get to the high altitude solo stage 🙂

We go there pretty often during the winter. I definitely recommend them for aerotow training.

Maybe February or March? We were just back there (end of March), lots of thermals!

Maybe next time, we’re there quite a bit! I originally got my AT rating on the East Coast but I’ve learned a ton about towing at Sonora Wings :)

Thanks! I weigh around 120 lbs, not sure what my hang weight is though. I think a Sport 135 would probably be fine for your weight but a 155 may work also, it probably depends on your preference and the conditions you’re flying in.
