The kind of paper and the pen that I use are the most important part of my art and ppl always ask me why. Thank you for this video, I can send this to them to make them understand more.
I've been trying to find good paper for coloured pencils after realizing sketch paper is the worst format to use them on. This is incredibly helpful, thank you.
This information is so hard to find! Thank you for this! And your artwork is amazing. Especially the liquor drink with ice, I actually said, "whoa..." 😮
You’re a fantastic instructor, I can’t tell you how many times I’ve looked for something foundational and your video knocks it out of the ballpark. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience!
This is a wonderful information video. I especially appreciate the little actual demo of the medium on the surface each time. This answers many questions I had, and also several I didn't even know enough to ask! You're a skilled and generous-hearted educator, which adds many times to your gifts as an artist.
Wow, dude! This answers questions I've had for years. I wish I'd had you as a teacher back in art school. Good job explaining! Thanks for posting. Keep up the good work.
Great job here - it looks like you really put some thought into this. It was really helpful to see some of the popular papers talked about in use and seeing actual pieces of art you've done on each.
I joined yesterday and am glad that I did. I have used plenty of your free videos(Thank you) and will continue to do so, but now I won't feel guilt! The material you present is excellent and easy to understand. Bravo! Thank you, too, for making your classes so affordable!
I recently started drawing and using various media again and I've been paying attention to different paper qualities and their characteristics. Thank you for this informative video!
Thank you. I just started drawing and am pleased with my results but I can see how other paper will help me further enhance my drawings. I use graphite pencils but have expanded into color pencils and soon some water color pencils.

I am 51 and finally getting my art together. I'm just starting out, and learning to sketch. My goal eventually will be to be an artist in oil. My question to anyone here that honestly knows; What is the best type of, or brand is best for sketching? Thanks and I'm loving the courses!!!!
I'm actually just learning to make my own paper for art. This was informative in giving me the language to use to market my hand made paper if I decide to sell it.
Thank you! Soo very helpful! I am a Grandma beginner artist!. I am learning a lot from viewing many of your videos. Perhaps soon, I will be able to buckle down and just take your art course. I simply did not know what I could do or learn. But I am having a blast along the way! Thank you for educating the total beginner with free videos. P.S. I keep coming back to your videos because you are easy to understand, and you tackle one area at a time. I have been able to try so many different things so I can determine just what it is I will want to work with.
This was a big help. I just started with colored pencils and was using cheap paper. I have learned a lot about paper here and will be experimenting. Thanks!

Excellent tutorial about quality artist papers on the market and what paper to choose for your media choice for your next project. I found this very helpful. Thank you!
Thank you, I knew some of this but not as much as I thought. I’ve only just discovered Yupo paper. Thank you so much for a well presented video. I LOVE your tree. As I watched the video I realised how diverse and wonderful your sketches are, you have a lot of talent. It must be wonderful to draw so well!
Best paper for Fountain pens by far, is the Canson drawing 180gr. Fineliners and Fountain pen artists, that haven't used it yet, would really be blown away! It's really unbelievable, how those mediums, look and perform, on that paper!! For Polychromos, I like the Heavyweight Daler Rowney (both the Smooth and the Fine Grain). Fabriano Artistico is also another favorite, for any kind of medium. especially Polychromos, then my favorite graphite pencils (Faber Castell 9000 and their TK 9500/ TK 4600, which use the best quality graphite out there!). Honorable mention, Stonehenge Legion Hotpress.
You are forgetting to mention the colored pencils and as well as the graphite and charcoal are working well on the other side of Canson Mi-teinted mire specifically! Good review of paper using fir beginner only, because a lot of others informations weren’t 😊mentioned over here! Personally. I love pastelmat, legion Stonehenge (green pad), hot pressed watercolour pad of any brands for multimedia, but particularly for colored pencils and watercolor pencils and marker as well for my finished art projects! Hope these info would be helpful to someone who is looking for suitable surfaces and economic ones for multimedia using! 😊
Best paper video I've watched. So many are people just telling people what they love and not really showing the close ups so people can figure out what is best for them.
I like to buy very small pads of paper in a wide range of types. A bit expensive at the start, but I can use all my media on the samples and work out my favourites before a heavy outlay on larger sheets
Thank you so much Matt, very informative! I’ve never heard of Canson Hot presses paper, I’m definitely going to try this out! I just started watching ur videos, ur art is amazing! Any suggestions on what videos I should start with as a beginner? I did a lot of acrylic painting years ago, but always wanted to learn how to do pen and ink and pencils, both regular and watercolor. Thank you so much!! Liz😊👍🏼💗
Thank you for this video series! Arches is our favorite for watercolor paper but would also like to dabble a little bit with Canson, Fabriano and Ampersand. Do you have a video review of Fabriano and Ampersand by any chance?
You keep referring to bleeding when the term you're looking for is feathering. Feathering is outward. Thin lines become thicker as the ink is absorbed. Technical artists worst nightmare. Bleeding is downward. Thin lines remain thin, but ink works its way downwards and through the back of the paper. You can see feathering most often at the drop in and lift off points as they become larger dots of ink.
I have a set of Faber Castle Pitt pastel pencils . They are quite chalky . What paper would you recommend ? I would like to draw flowers , butterflies . Thank you for sharing your talent
cannyou tell me what paper I should use! I've been trying to improve my drawing and watching tutorials and when it comes time to blending and shading it's only ruining my drawing! I recently bought a cheap mixed media book and it's a little bit better! I tried Strathmore drawing paper and other mixed media but can't blend or shade just ruins the drawing! or could it be the drawing pencils I'm using!
This was very informative. I am a colored pencil artist primarily painting portraits. I am very frustrated with the fibers coming up on some of the paper I have been using. I am looking for a hot press paper that I can achieve smooth transitions using multiple layers of CP and not have those fibers coming up as I work. Even using a lighter hand I am getting these. Could you please advise as to the best paper or even a board to use. Also, what do you know about Ampersand surfaces. Thanks so much in advance.
Sir i have a3 +sheets by hand we connot tare & when we see in sun light it look like bambu forest structure . It's around 10 grems can i get any details when I took this papper that old man says it's around 100 years
Hi there, what is the best use case scenerio for cotton based papers? Usually they are being sold as watercolor papers and you mention that they soak water more than cellulose counterparts.. which mediums suits betterfor it?
I wouldn't shy away from pulp paper if you're are a beginner to intermediate artist, fact is acid free (neutralized) will last for decades if stored correctly, i mean it's not like you're going to pick one up after ten years and it crumbles in your hands. I personally have sketchbooks that are over 30 years old and show on signs of yellowing or degradation, in fact i have some cheap department store stuff i bought as a kid (i'm 57) that's still viable. A good 50-60 lb sketch book is an invaluable tool for learning technique and rouging out final work so don't be afraid to pick one up. There will come a time when you may want to use the more expensive papers, and when you do i advise taking some time to familiar yourself with their attributes just like any other art material, but for the most part save the cotton stuff for works that will be sold or displayed Speaking of weight, your info is a little imprecise. Yes, is the weight of 500 sheets but the size of those sheet aren't universally standardized so one companies 50 lb can be lighter than another's. To know a papers TRUE weight look for it's grams per meter (gsm, g/m2) weight, it's more precise as it uses a standard size.
??? 🙃Are there any good wire-free drawing paper books where the paper doesn't fall out.... If not then which is the strongest wire drawing paper book ?
Thank you, a most enlightening video! Just one note, playing music while you talk is very difficult for the hard of hearing, like my mum. They tend to struggle, then just give up. Imho, no music would be much more inclusive to your viewers. 👍😊
