Hi Gene. i don't know if you have a Woodcraft store near you,but that's where I've been buying my chisels. They carry a lot of Pfeil brand chisels. Pfeil chisel are Swiss made. An in my opinion are a good quality professional grade,but they are 5 or 6 other just as good an they all have their pros an cons. Just remember wood carving chisels an bench top chisels are two different chisels. So stay away from any big box store,or you'll be greatly disappointed. An besides you can also shop online for your chisels. Just do some research first on the "Big Six" an remember you'll always get what you pay for. Most chisels are usually priced in the low $40.00 usd range and up. I guess you can tell my brand of choice is Pfeil. An their always ready to use right out of the sheath,and at the worst end of the spectrum you may have to strop it on the leather 1/2 dozen times at first to get it autopsy sharp. But don't drop them; they keep a razors edge because they have a RC hardness of around 60 to about 63. So if dropped they could chip; perhaps that's why they have octagon handles lol. An another company that's awesome for quality,and value. Is Narex; they're a Czech Republic company; well Czech Republic from 1993... so if I'm saying the country wrong it's by mistake,and no disrespect is meant. Anyway Narex makes chisels draw-knives, chip-carving knives,and others. Their steel is as good of quality as any other of the big 6 chisel Co. I only have their 4 piece bench set,but it was awesome right out of the packaging an I probably spent less time truing up these chisels out of any "bench chisels" that I've ever owned. I would definitely consider these chisels professional archival,or restoration sculpting quality. My apologies for the long read in the comments. P.S. I do hope 2020 gets better for us all,and by the way did anyone wake up on Valentine's day thinking a face mask an a package of TP would be something your girlfriend might really treasure a few months down the road...what!?!?...why hell no,but look at us now!😧🤪😆🤣

+Jordan Pryce Thanks! Basswood is a great wood to start out with. Butternut is also good, but is more difficult to locate. Balsa wood is definitely too soft.

I just saw a video on a guy using Lime Wood. Apparently its soft enough for carving a bas relief. FYI - Its MS not MRS. 2018 not 1950. Times are a changing dude. Mrs is outdated, outmoded, outlived, outnumbered, and so out there. Keep up with the times.

+Mark Foo That is referred to as a #12, 6mm. Sometimes other companies refer to it as a #41, 6mm. Hope this helps.

+Larry Tipson I am aware of their stone chisels, but I do not know about their carving chisels. Their stone carving chisels are great, so I'm assuming the quality of the woodcarving chisel are also good quality.

It magnetizes the chisel steel making it difficult to remove all the burr filings, they tend to stick to the front outside corners. because the filings are the same hardness as the edge they can blunt it or damage the edge. use a lightly oiled paper towel or rag and wipe the edge, then a light stroke through a scrap piece of wood at 45 degrees will clean them off. You can demagnetize the chisels, buy a demagnetizer machine off ebay or Amazon for around $50-60.00.

Some people like to carve their own so sometimes they don't come with handles

Buying tools online would probably be the best option if you don't have a local source.

ramy وافي wafy وافي Another possibility is making your own tools. If you live in an area where money is extremely hard to come by but want to follow your passion. Make them yourself. If you can find any good metal, creating a forge is rather simple. Otherwise you're just going to have to somehow save up till you can get what was described here.

Look at her chart at 6:14. Go to Amazon. Check out Swiss Made and Pfeil, and Two Cherries. Search on the phrase, ' wood carving Swiss Made', then 'Pfeil', etc. FYI - Buy cheap and regret it. Buy top quality only. If you cannot afford it, save up and wait till you can.
