How do Lionel's uncoupling and unloading tracks work? How do I wire them? When were they made? This video looks at Lionel's 1019, 6019, 6009, 6029, and 6149, UCS and RCS uncoupling and unloading tracks, and how to simplify and replace the wiring.

Thanks Mike. Very informative. I am impressed at your knowledge of all the “old stuff”. I love to watch your videos to get a complete understanding of many different issues. You have helped me make good use of my childhood O27 train that I hope to pass along to my grandchildren. Thanks so much for all your efforts to make these videos for all of us. In some cases I have found you are the only source of this information. 👍

Thanks for the kind words. That's one of the reasons I started this channel. I found while reading various message boards that many things that were once common knowledge have been lost.

Thanks for this...I have the older O gauge model, never used in box, with instructions. The instructions do not tell you how to use accessory power. I fumbled around but could never get the thing to work UNLESS the train was powered---which is nuts if you want to activate something beyond couplers. Your point at the end was so valuable. Just got done enjoying this 10 minutes after I watched this video. I am getting my Lionel Sound of Steam set back up and running after 50 YEARS of sitting in the box. Aside from the Sound of Steam not working (I think they all failed by now) I got everything working. My 1972 Log Car had only been played with once, with the cheesy plastic flipper. (MPC period loved plastic replacing metal, even on the car couplers) and now I can dump the logs remotely. So cool!

Glad to be of help. On the SOS, open the tender and replace the foam under the sound board with ANY insulated material. If you're lucky, the board might not yet be fried. The foam is the #1 failure point. Otherwise the board shorts out against the tender frame.

There's an update to this video with an easier wiring setup: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-iBEgbR_i8d8.htmlsi=s-JGY1v5OFrod485

Our layout has one of these tracks, the one with the magnet in the middle, but I had no idea what it was for. Now I have to check all our cars, to see if we have ones that work with this.

Nice video Mike one question with regard to the 6019 rewiring diagram. What is the orientation of the track itself Is that the underside of the the 6019 that is being shown. Thanks

Do you happen to know the screw size for the 6149 uncoupling track
@ToyTrainTipsAndTricks

The screws on an original UCS track are listed as 4-40 x 3/16", so I'd guess the same.

Hi Mike I know this is an old video, but I’m a newbie trying to help my grandson with a train he got when his great grandfather passed. Near as I can tell, it’s a train from the 90’s and runs on DC power with an AC accessory power connection. My question is the proper way to connect the 6-65149 uncoupler with constant power. Do I use the AC accessory power or a separate DC constant power? Do I need insulating pins somehow or is the magnet completely insulated from the “hot” center rail? These are probably stupid questions, so I apologize in advance. Thank you for your time. Gary

Let's walk through this. You have the modern style 027 on coupler with a single offset magnet. In normal operation, the common side of the magnet goes through the outside rails, and the single wire from the magnet goes to the activating button and to the Hot side track power. In normal AC operation, you would simply attach the hot wire to the hot side of the accessory output. In this case you have DC track power. Running the magnet off of track power should be no issue. Without knowing the internal wiring of your particular transformer, I don't believe it would be a problem to run the magnet off of AC power even though your track is DC I would try to hook the magnet up to the AC terminals and see what happens. First try one terminal, and if that doesn't work try the other. If your AC output is internally phased with the DC output, this should not be a problem. If there are two separate coils, it might be tricky. I hope this helps.
