Lithium polymer (lipo) batteries are a wonder of the modern age and have revolutionized the hobby of flying RC planes.
In this video I attempt to explain a little about the numbers on those batteries and give some advice about how to charge and store them.
Coming up soo will be a series of videos showing how to select the correct size and voltage of lipo for your models.
As usual, questions in the comments below or in the forums at www.RCModelRevi...

Wow, I think you just saved my (first lipo battery's) life! I'm very new to RC flying, and lipo batteries as well, so especially the part about storage charging your lipo's was an eye opener! Thank you for this very informative channel of yours! ;-)

It's not Milliamp or even Milliamps., as you keep saying. It's Milli Amp Hours, or mAh. Milli Amps is a measure of Current Flow, and Milliamp Hours, is a measure of capacity or discharge or current flow over one hour.

iiiDartsiii it changes a lot actually...you don't train your dog to shit in your bed first and then use the newspaper and then go outside do you? ...knowing your shit when it comes to electricity IS important and I if you're new then misinformation is even worse and will caddis you to do more research and second guess yourself down the line. Most people tend to avoid half assery when it comes to shit that can kill you, burn your house down or destroy hundreds of dollars worth of gear and models. I dunno, maybe your into that sorta thing...

Informative but a little misleading. mAh is 'm'illi 'A'mp 'h'ours. Don't forget the 'h'. (1000mAh gives 1000mA for 1hour). OR (1Amp for 1hour). Or proportionally less current for a longer time. Otherwise a very interesting video. Your teaching style is great.

I`m a bit confused. I never make the call on the C charge rate on my lipo packs. I plug them into my balance charger and it does the rest. A 3S pack usually takes 65 minutes to fully charge no matter the mah size. If i have a 1300 mah lipo, i will choose 1.3 amp charge, does this mean i charge the pack at 1 amp? What am i missing?

Since voltage x amps = watts (power), am I right to believe that a 3s 4000mah, 45c lipo would generate more power than a 3s 2200mah, 45c?

These videos are usually full of good info for newbs..NOT this one...the nomenclature is misused and NOT properly illustrated. If you're new, so more research and don't take this video as bible and don't write things down the way he talks...milliamps and mAh are not the same or interchangeable, one is a measure of flow and the other is a measure of capacity...totally different..

Good video... The 1000 mah batteries is off on the hobby king comparison, They mislead you with labeling. they are notorious for this scenario: the hobby king is bigger/heavier because they use a 1200 mah pack call it a 1000 mah and this allows them to raise the C ratting... this allows them to use a lot of 3.7v 1200 cells in different applications keeping cost down... Also makes you think you getting a better battery...

Stupid question probably but can you storage charge a 1 cell 3.7 500mah battery often used in quadcopters? Since they have no balance plug and all, I wonder how it can do that. Oh, and at what rate should I charge say, a 650mah 1s lipo? Can you set most decent chargers to 0.65 amps? Or won't it matter if I set it to 0.5, take a bit more time but get it fully charged nonetheless?

Some good info but I'm a little confused about the 450mha being able to only able to draw a fraction of the C rating. My understanding 1000mha means you can draw 1 amp for 1 hour and 450mha for just under 1/2 an hour. C is the maximum discarge rate so a 1000mha will last a few minutes drawing 30 amps and 450mha will last less than half that. In short I believe the 450mha can draw its full C rating. please advise if I'm wrong as there is a significant difference and I would like to keep safe.

like u said 1000 mili amps is 1amp if you were to put a1amp load on the batery it will discharge in 1 hour put a 2amp load it will discharge in 1/2 hour! more amps the faster it discharges! 25c is maximum discharge before batwry begins to fail. if ur air plane set up pulls 30 amps at max throttle you will fry battery see! but if ur set up pulls max 15 amps the you can do the math like this 1amp load is 1 hour 15 amp load is 15 devided by 1 hour or 60 devided by 15 = 4 minutes of flight time at max throttle of 15 amps yes can recharge the battery at 1/4 of c rating safely that would be about 5 amp but still it is hard on the battery i go by a 1/8 rule if not in hurry if out in feild i do 1/4 rule happy flying
@kymcainday6677
@kymcainday6677 6 лет назад
C rating is actually not the amount of current, it is just a multiplier for the 1amp current; that is the permeability that can be drawn multiplied to the actual amount of current. And about the size: a baterry with greater C rating is actually lighter. You are comparing two different brands of batterry that are made in different ways in terms of packaging..It would be fair comparing two batteries with the same brands and current but with different C rating.

great vids, always very helpful. what would you say is the most accurate, a battery balance/watt meter or balance charger. Why I ask is after a balance charge if I connect to my balance/watt meter to check it always says its out and gives alarm tone. I then balance with this meter but it all takes extra time. Both are overlander make the charger is RC-6s AC pro balance charger. Thanks
@78Epitaph
@78Epitaph 11 лет назад
Those batteries you mention are only one cell, and as there is no other cell to balance it with, there is no need for a balancing connector. If you use an Imax type charger (or more or less any other for that fact) just connect it to the main charge port (red to positive, black to negative) and charge as a 1S battery. Measuring the voltage is just between the positive and the negative, the same as "per cell" method on the multicell batteries.
@Flash1940
@Flash1940 12 лет назад
CONTINUED: No gender troubles....and besidees....I only connect ONE of them to bring the model on line....not both like a deans connector....where both negative & positive are made simultaneously. Besides they're difficult for me to get apart for some reason. I have a discussion question: After giving the battery a storage charge, would keeping the battery in the refrigerator be a wise practice?
@gluino

@RCModelReviews I think we all agree about internal resistance hurting the efficiency more, when current drawn is higher. But the valid point that hot4plasma was trying to make, is that the largest numbers on these battery pack labels are in milliamp-hours (or amp-hours), (as opposed to just "milliamps" which you say at around 1:14 ). Because the quantity primarily indicates the *charge capacity*, not current rating. The "1C" spec is defined as capacity divided by 1 hour. To be pedantic.

+justme mentalist A battery is a battery, it has a voltage, C rating and capacity, as long as those number line up with what you want to use it for it will work if you can connect it. If its got some special connector, you will need to either buy an adapter, put a matching connector on the new quad or change the connector on the battery to whats on the new quad.

Great helpful videos. One question; why is there a difference between the voltage stated on the cover of a battery, i.e., 3S Lipo is 11.1 volts(3 x 3.7 volts). But when you measure the actual voltage of a fully charged battery each cell is right at 4.2 volts. Why isn't the 4.2 actual voltage used in all the calculations?

I am shocked that these batteries don't have more capacity. This is why I don't like to use these kinds of cells for power banks. I go for capacity rather than current delivery, as in most cases my power banks will only have to put out 3 amps max.
@MarkTillotson
@MarkTillotson 11 лет назад
Useful video, but pet peeve is failing to distinguish capacity from current, capacity is in milliampere-hours, or ampere-hours, which is current x time. So the letter C really means "capacity divided by 1 hour", which is a true current. End of pedantry!

I really enjoy your videos. Very educational and good sense of humor. I feel like attending an electronics classroom with an excellent teacher. Thanks a lot.
