Hi! In this video I want to introduce and explain the new aluminum PCBs, how they are made and for what applications they are designed (not for standard PCB) Aluminum PCBs are ideal for situations when thermal heat dissipation requirements are very high. They are more effective at directing thermal energy away from PCB components and are used more than ever for applications of high power and high thermal heat dissipation... Like LED applications, including traffic lights, automotive lighting and general lighting.Unfortunately, as they are made, these PCBs have the drawback that they can only be single layer PCB and with SMD components
HOW ALUMINUM PCBs ARE MADE?
Aluminum printed circuit boards are also known as metal base PCBs and are comprised of metal based laminates covered by copper foil circuit layers. They are made of alloy plates that are a combination of aluminum, magnesium and silumin. They have anexcellent electrical insulation, good thermal potential and high machining performance, and they differ from other PCBs in several important ways like:
- These PCBs have a base layer that consists of an aluminum alloy substrate (Aluminum Layer)
- The thermal insulation layer that is an important component of the PCB. It contains a ceramic polymer that has excellent viscoelastic properties, great thermal resistance and defends the PCB from any stresses.
- The circuit layer that contains the copper foil for the PCB tracks (Circuit Copper Layer)
- The dielectric layer of insulation absorbs heat as current flows through the circuits. This is transferred to the aluminum layer, where the heat is dissipated.
In summary, the advantages of this type of PCB are:
- Less Expensive
- Ambient Friendly
- Heat transfer
- Sturdy and for voltages higher than 3000 volts
- Lightweight (compared to other metals)
HOW ABOUT STANDARD COMPONENTS?
It is not possible to use this type of PCB with standard components, but only with SMD / SMT components which are positioned and soldered on the same layer.Because as a result of the internal contact of the holes with the aluminum, all the pins of the components will be short-circuited with each other :(
The "Aluminum Vu-Meter" PCB was made only for the realization of this video, but as I explained it is not working. Made aluminum PCB only for single layer projects, with SMD SMT components

I like the finish of them. They could also be used to create nice looking front panels for encoders, displays and buttons if we use cutouts. Probably more affordable than using a CNC service to get a panel.

Thank you very much! How durable is the printed text? I wonder if i can make a fully aluminum case from equal parts and wipe of the text from all sides but front panel without leaving the scratches.

Thanks for the video. Why is one side purly aluminum and one site white silk screen? How did you design this in easyEDA? Or is this standard? Thanks

Why did you make a through hole board as an example, when you cant use through-hole components?

Thank you for the informative video! Can you use the "bottom" silk screen layer for text and symbols on the "bare aluminum" side although JLCPCB supports only one layer for aluminum PCBs?

Hi, thank you, the answer is no because at the moment jlcpcb only supports the single layer for aluminum boards.

Se sapevo di questi pcb in alluminio , li avrei utilizzati nel mio video dove ho costruito un faretto con led smd 5730. Anche altri tuoi video sono molto interessanti . Iscritto!!!!

Grazie mille, per i led ad alta potenza sono perfetti, ho comunque visto che sui siti di produzione economica di PCB, almeno quelli che seguo io, sono disponibili da sole tre settimane. Anche il tuo canale è interessante, ricambio l'iscrizione :)

I wonder when we will see multi-layer aluminium PCBs. With the insane energy densities of today's ICs, it seems like a real restriction that we can basically only cool them from one side and have a slab of plastic on the other...

Come sempre hai realizzato i video con un progetto che non si addice proprio al tipo di PCB utilizzato. Hai fatto solo uno spreco dato che te li sponsorizzano. Ma bensì potevi realizzarlo quello dei LED è fare un faretto con dei LED di potenza ove necessità la dissipazione termica. Cmq non ha proprio senso questo video scusami sai .

Ciao, questo video serve solo a spiegare cosa siano i PCB in alluminio e perchè non si possano usare per i comuni progetti, nulla di più, non è un video progetto.
