Today we talk about orchid keikis, try to understand why orchids produce and if their presence is a sign of health, disease or none of the above :)
▼▼▼More info bellow!▼▼▼
Before we start, if you missed the video in which I talk about what keikis are opposed to new growth, you can check it out first here • Orchid keiki Vs. new g...
Now what determines the keiki production is the hormonal balance of the orchid in question, the hormones dictate what the new structure will be and, with the right concentrations, the new structure will turn out to be a keiki for monopodial orchids mainly and for a few sympodials as well. More on what hormones are here en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plant_h...
The 2 main hormones present in plants are cytokinin en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cytokinin and auxin en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Auxin They perform different tasks for the orchid and, as it would seem, cytokinin is responsable for keiki production, as it is also contained in keiki paste.
An orchid can produce keikis in good health and good environment, but it can also do this when it is stressed, usually by a disease that impairs leaf production. Even external factors can influence keikis, like in the case of some Dendrobiums. Since we are talking about a fine hormonal balance we cannot find a perfect formula to know when an orchid will produce one, but we can foresee at least some of them.

I just have to brag on my Dancing Butterfly. She has put on 5 leaves, 6 flower spikes and is now growing a Keiki. She is still producing leaves that are well formed and green, plus she is about to burst out of yet another pot! She is a freak of nature. I hope she slows down. I don't have another pot for her!!! LOL

I've learned so much from you. Thank you for all your info on orchids. I've had mine since 2018. And it's still alive. I'm so excited cause I noticed a couple of days ago that its growing a Keiki. And I'm also a success at growing the African Violet. A few unsuccessful tries. I watched your episodes of African Violets. Now I've had mine going on a year. Instead of a week. I love the African Violet. So thank you again. For all the information.

Excellent video on plant physiology and basic biochemistry, evolution and genetics. Theories #2 and #3 combined together seem to offer the best explanation for keiki production

I have an orchid that has 3 keikis on it. They don’t have any roots. The plant is suffering too, but surprisingly it has been in this state for a year and it has not died. I try to keep it well hydrated. I would love to bring her back to life. If it is possible to send you pictures and get your advice somehow please let me know! I love your channel and content!

I bought 2 orchids from the supermarket, found your channel bought repot things and One had fungus that spread and it died the other is doing well and I have a pot open so I thought if I happen to see another orchid I’d get it and then I knew what to look for and I found one that has good roots and healthy leaves but while at the supermarket I found an orchid that had a keiki. Now I have no idea what to do with it and the mother plant was in extremely wet moss and I can see she’s not doing well but the keiki is doing good 4 strong shiny leaves and 1 root plus I can see another root budding. So what do I do with it? Do I keep it on the mother plant? Do I take it off to try and save the mother plant? Im so knew to orchids and one already died in me after following evey instruction from your channel and no it’s not on you or me it wasn’t taking up water and the roots were too far gone to save but now I’m super concerned about this keiki and I want both the mother plant and the keiki to grow and become beautiful plants. Im just unsure what to do when the mother plant isn’t looking good. Once I get home and. Clean it I will see what damage there is. Yea I’m literally in the supermarket parking lot commenting about this right after buying it 😂

Great subject. And, the presentation was entertaining, educational and timely to my current needs. I have one keiki on a stressed phalanopsis (lost most of its roots to rot). From your earlier videos I learned that a keiki stresses the host plant. So to reduce the continuing stress on the plant I wrapped some sphagnum moss around the keiki and keep it moist by spraying once per day with distilled water. As soon as I did this the keiki grew faster. Is this appropriate? Is my black thumb starting to turn a little green?

Gr8 educational video! I have two keikis coming out of the same node where I think it was broken off (seems to high up for someone to have cut it off right there) Do you think it's mutated? It's a Phal and I don't use keiki paste. The mother plant has one 1 inch root and two droopy leaves turning yellow at the tips and the keikis are already about 6 months old and the two of them put together are only as big as the keiki you most recently potted. Anyway, even with all this sadness and struggle the thought of those two keikis surviving and producing double the flowers of the mother plant is enough to keep me motivated! At this rate it will probably be five years from now and I don't know what the mother plants flowers looked like!!!

I bought two flower shop orchids about this time last year (March/April). They were both in full bloom. I live in Washington state so I put them by a southern window with indirect light. One stayed in bloom for six months! The other was about four. No fertilizer was given during that time. Once the flowers fell, I kept the stems. I usually cut those down. The one that lost the flowers first I repotted in repotme mix (the dark kind-can’t remember the name). The longer blooming one I did not repot. Both have healthy roots, firm leaves, growing new leaves and roots. No flower spikes 😐 I even took the temp down at night by 10 degrees F. The long bloomer has developed two keikis, with one actually growing up and through one of its leaves. Like it split it in the middle. It’s weird. Instead of the repotme fertilizer I went with a straight 10-10-10 diluted in distilled water. Since Washington is gloomy, I also provided grow lights set at 7 out of 10, 10 being the brightest. Did I do something wrong? They’re phals btw. I’m scared

Hi Dani, I purchased an orchid last year when it was in full bloom. I really dont know how to care for this dendrobium noble. I watered it through the winter and I only recently learned I wasn't supposed to. Now its April(spring time) and it has made 2 keikis. Is it going to flower this year or maybe I didn't properly take care of it.

Wow, this last one is really a large keiki! We had one of similar size on a flower spike, and it bloomed half a year after being removed. What will happen though if a small keiki has only 1 leaf of 7 cm length, but the newer one appears to have dried off? There is a small dry stub in the middle of the crown. It has 3 roots though

Hey Danny! Thank you a lot for your orchid videos!! Can I ask you a question about two phalenopsis keikis? 😅 The two keikis have 3 leaves each and 1 and 2 fairly long roots >15cm. I had the two keikis replanted in bark in a garden shop, but the roots were snapped in the process! After a month they have both a flower spike growing and one of them has also a root growing. Should I cut the flower spikes (They are about 1 cm long) or should I wait? I don't know if they have all that energy!! Thanks!

Hi MissOrchidGirl, I have a keiki growing off an old spike that I've been meaning to detach and repot it individually, but since we're moving house in a few weeks, I thought I'd wait to do that there. However, now I'm noticing there is a new flower spike coming from the keiki itself. I know the common advice is not to repot orchids while they are blooming. This spike is still tiny, no blooms, do you think I should repot the keiki immediately or wait until the house move or wait for it to bloom, although I imagine that would be hard on the mother, which is still in good health? thanks

Hi again! I just wrote essentially this same comment on your video about leaves, but thought I'd put it here too to up the chances of you seeing it, Danny :) Or if anyone else has input would love to hear! One of my phalaenopsis has a very large keiki on it that has been around at least since March of this year, if not a month or two before. Thanks to your video on leaves, I realized a new leaf my orhcid recently grew is much smaller than others and probably because it is using up a lot of energy to take care of the keiki. The keiki doesn't have roots yet, and I didn't want to remove it until roots showed up. The whole orchid still looks pretty good overall, just that its new leaf is much smaller, and the keiki is probably taking up a good amount of energy. Any suggestions? Should I continue being patient and wait?

Hi Miss Orchid Girl, I found your videos on roots helpful and used them to partially save my unhealthy looking orchid. Now the strange part, the orchid never fully recovered but instead is growing 2 keiki, the keiki are small but one of the keiki is about to flower (with a normal size bloom) is this normal?

Last year I had a mother create a basal keiki and it just seemed to suck all of the life out of the original mother plant and she started to go limp and look dehydrated while the keiki looked really good. This summer I separated them and the mother improved greatly after not having to sustain two orchids anymore. Yet she is doing it all over again, got a new 3-4 week old keiki from the same mother plant. I just think that individual in particular is more genetically prone to basal keikis. Since the new ones should be clones, I'll have to see with time, if they show the same tendencies too. I really haven't done anything to make it progragate, I'd actually like it to produce a flower spike, I am quite sure it's white but it hasn't bloomed in forever, so I am starting to doubt the color a little. 😆

I have a keiki growing from the top of a flower spike. I thought my orchid was healthy, but recently repotted it, and many of the roots seem to be in trouble. I assume it produced the keiki because of stress. How does the keiki develop roots if it’s so far up on a flower spike, and how do I care for the keiki if the root system of the mother is in jeopardy?
@garytaylor903

My orchid has produced 3 Keiki and my question is this what type of care should I give? aside from Mericle grow orchid food it started on its own no stress I trim the roots as needed etc., and is it normal for the mother plant leaves to dry up and shrivel up? Mine are just babies at this point my flower stems dried up and I cut them off should I have done that?

I had a basal keiki on one of my orchids last year and it seemed to suck the life out of the mother plant, so when the keiki started to grow roots of its own, I separated them in an attempt to save the mother plant. It worked and as a result, she's giving me a new keiki again this year, so I am monitoring the mother and little sister keiki quite closely. 😆

katalina soprano I have several kekis on my Phalaenopsis I have pretty baby they aren’t old but leaves are very pretty and no roots yet, I saw a video where a man had on for 18 months and he was able to remove an plant. I had one that my stem starts to die from top of stem so that keki had grown y’all but no roots I was concerned about it dying I just closed my eyes and went from instinct I cleaned my blade an tools I cut above and below the keki on the stem so I put cinnamon on each cut area set my keki up with old stem laying vertical covered the area around bottom of keki with moist moss and placed in lecca self watering pot and just prayed sitting in south kitchen window and so far it’s alive is all I can say I just tried to keep the baby alive and don’t know if it will thrive or not. But my instinct usually doesn’t let me down but Orchids are new to me an as with all the other things I grow I just grow them because I love plant and flowers I have all 25 or more plumerias growing and still blooming in my green house and they are gigantic and I have got to change them up we can no longer pack those easy we older now but it’s becoming a difficult thing to put them away for winter they grow from spring I purchased sticks and I now have six foot or taller plants in this almost tropical climate and my green hands lol they are just gorgeous word of advice I ordered some that came from overs seas and after they are dipped in something red at customs when you get them every one has died from overseas after sitting in a pot forever they end up rotten so don’t even try they just must be damaged from the red stuff is all I can guess. But anyway orchids is my newest addition to my green house so for so good thanks to Dani and everyone who shares information thanks,

One of my orchids has 3 keikis growing on 2 flower spikes. Now the keikis each have 2 flower spikes growing as well as the mother plant has a new flower spike. What I'm wondering is when should I separate the keikis? They have plenty of long roots. Now that they are spiking, should i wait til they're through blooming to cut them?
@lb6277
@lb6277 3 года назад
I'm no expert but I had this same thing happen. I have a small noid phal that had four keikis all growing at the base of the axis. All four had roots(aerial and terrestrial) and I was able to separate three safely and they are growing well so far. The fourth I left on the mother plant as it was just too close to the axis to sever comfortably. Everyone is thriving so far. So if you can get a clean cut you should be fine. Just use a touch of cinnamon on the cuts and keep a close eye on the keikis while they establish.

Forgot to say: I cut the flower spikes that were growing on all the keikis and the mother plant so they could focus on root growth/recovery.

Hi Lidia, well it depends if the keiki has enough energy to produce roots since the mother plant cannot sustain it. Keeping a more humid environment around it will help, but it will not do wonders. When roots are capable to absorb water the keiki is on the right track.
