Karen, I’ve been painting for years and have done many hours of research. I’m almost 90 years old and taught pastel in H.S. many years ago. I have to say that your style of painting with pastel is THE Best....you are up there with all the impressionist artist in the world. You should go down in history. God love you for being who you are and so talented. Gina

Thanks so much for sharing your expertise with us. I haven’t been too thrilled about my painting lately so I am going to do minis for a while to practice and maybe give as gifts for Christmas. I love Jenny and how she makes herself a part of the process.

Thanks Karen, this 15 min or so video has cleared to me many concerns and doubts I had on how to apply pastel colours and work with them. I like very much your approach of suggesting form, choice of colours and their application.

Really helpful teaching about how to practice on something small so that it doesn't feel like a tragedy if you make a little mistake. Also really helpful advice on how to keep from getting bogged down in rendering details. I'm going to go right over to my worktable and cut a few trading card sized pieces of paper! Thanks, Karen, as always.

Do you ever seal your work? I went to Hobby Lobby to ask if they framed pastel paintings. They said they would only do it if the work was sealed. I wouldn't want to spray a fixative on artist work. Stumped

I don't use final fixative. It can darken colors and I find that with sanded papers it isn't necessary.

Karen when do you decide it is time to remove the pastels from the box and put in your studio box? I see you use some from their original boxes.
@KarenMargulis
@KarenMargulis Год назад
Once I have filled a studio box with a good range of colors and values and have a comprehensive set then I decide to keep some of the special sets in their original boxes and take them out for certain reasons. A comprehensive set include a range of each color on the color wheel with a warm and cool version and at least three values of the color. I share more about this over on my Patreon group!

I just wanted to express my gratitude for making these videos. Each and every one of them are immensely inspiring. I am a avid fan of impressionism in any medium, and you are such a master of your craft, and a great teacher to boot. Had to subscribe. I also admire Bethany Field's work, but watching her videos is like watching a ping pong match from 2 feet away. I can't keep up :( My only gripe with your videos is the camera work. No offense to Michael, and I am sure he is a good man with best of intentions with whom I would probably enjoy having a cold beer at the local pub; it's just that his camera skills are not up to par with your awesome demos. Have you ever considered letting the cat hold the camera? Not that she does much around the studio anyway. Hi, Jenny! Joking aside, perhaps Michael should consider watching some RU-vid videos on camera work for interviews and demos. It's knowledge that won't go to waste and will keep me from banging my head on the desk every time the camera points towards Tokyo while you are showing something in London. I look forward to many more awesome videos on your channel.

Karen I love the pastel but worry about all the dust from the pastel... I would think I may use a mask as a barrier when I work with pastel media.
@JacqueBernadette
@JacqueBernadette 4 года назад
You are correct. I always use a mask and gloves. It's harmful breathing in the soft pastels. And they can absorb into your skin also. MASK: Honeywell Sheridan Freedom 2000 Series (or any Paint Spray and Pesticide Mask). GLOVES: I purchase Member's Mark Powder Free Nitrile Gloves at Sam's Club. I get 300 count for $9.98. You can use them over and over until they wear out and then put on a new pair.

@KarenMargulis

Hmmm it is hard to tell without seeing in person your work. One thing that leads to smudges is over blending. It also may be your pastels or the paper you are using. I wish I could help but I would need more information! Thank you for watching my video!

April Palmer Unfortunatly I had the same problem for more than a year,. It became chronic , I was coughing at every phrase I spoke. I had to take medication for it. I finally took off my Schmincke out of my palette because they where too volatile. So far the problem seem to be resolve. And my studio is cleaner. But I love those Schmincke! The colour were beautiful and so vibrant!
