I just discovered you and I just discovered pastels a year ago at 69. I'm in love! It's more than a treat to find you and your work along with videos. Christmas morning! I just love your style. Truly speaks to me! Particularly the cattails as I live on the edge of a marsh with a tidal river. Lucky me!

Hi Constance! So glad you left a comment on this video. Cattails are one of my favorite subject matter as you can tell. Thanks so much for the kudos on my work and so glad you found pastels! They are so fun to use - you are indeed lucky to live at the edge of a marsh!! Last weekend we went to a resort hotel for our anniversary, and we drove around looking at new homes, and suddenly I saw a bunch of cattails at the edge of a little inlet ... stop! I told my hubby - I got some great photo reference and new ideas for more cattail paintings.

@@jenevenhusfineart8925 The sun comes up on the far side of the marsh across the river and backlights the phragmites which makes a spectacular scene. But the phragmites, although a beautiful plume atop a 12 foot stem, are the bane of my existence! They are invasive and are blocking more and more my view of the river and crowding out the native cat o'nine tails. :(

Wow - I had no idea you had a RU-vid channel until this video showed up in my feed (yay, YT algorithm)! I have been a huge fan of your work and your ability to pull off both abstract and loose representational paintings; it's what I've been aspiring to for years with my own work. I really enjoyed the relaxed, methodical way you worked this painting, and your use of so many different tools. One of my favorite things about watching any pastel painting demo/tutorial (as well as my own work...most of the time ;)) is just watching the whole thing come together. Anyway, I'm looking forward to watching both your existing and new videos on RU-vid :D

Loving the fly-away fluff of the cattails, Jen! Wondering if you had a sketch or a photo you are working from here. That ultramarine blue of the water just pops it! Thanks for the reminder on "edges!"

Hi Terrilyn - yes I have a reference photo on my laptop to my left... yes, that blue really makes the painting along with the sunlight on the cattails!

I do not justify my enthusiasm, however, when I paint from a young age because I was born with the gift of art now at 65 years old, always an art lover, ie an amateur artist who for the last 15 years deals almost exclusively with pastels, so I know how to separate diamonds from charcoal

Not sure how I would do that here, there's no place to add a photo. Perhaps in future demos, I can show the reference photo before I begin... thanks for asking
