All about plaster repair during a knob & tube rewire.
Since we started our company, we have been on a mission to make the homes of our neighbors more safe. One of the biggest threats out there is knob and tube wiring, an antiquated form of wiring comprised of ceramic knobs and wires that are wrapped in cloth fabric.
We have devoted over 10 years honing in on a very difficult task, replacing knob and tube wiring without damaging the home. Our practices include floor protection and plaster repair. We understand our task isn’t easy, but it has been well worth it. We have mastered the art of rewiring a home with quality and safety first and foremost.

So, do you repaint the rooms also?

Nope, no painting……..yet. I may start offering.

First, and EXCELLENT VIDEO!! Looks like some rather slick production on this one, no? I like seeing the excess scratch coat material being wiped off of the surrounding plaster. Do you do any texturing?
@DonaldMillerElectric
@DonaldMillerElectric 2 года назад
Yeah, we’re stuck on matching the texture on this one. Channels suck when you match texture, but you keep trying till you get it spot on.

So don, if you have an electrician using anything but a multi tool to cut a hole for a receptacle you should stop the job immediately? I’ve looked for a video that you show the proper way to cut a receptacle hole but haven’t found one I’ve seen other folks do it on here but I’d sure like to see your process

@@DonaldMillerElectric this may be redundant but if a contractor is talking about a hole saw for holes in the wall , I should cancel and run?

@@user-dd7qp2qo4c Absolutely run I saw a company completely destroy a ceiling cause they thought a masonry hole saw would be the quick and easy way. Quality work takes time, sometimes there is no substitute.

I'm considering doing a rewire myself. I have watched a ton of your videos and am still on the fence of if I should even consider the project. What are your thoughts on homeowners doing rewires themselves? I'm thinking I could do the fishing and devices myself then hire out the installation of a new box and hooking everything up.

Electricians know what ur asking and usually charge more than normal. Rewires take time, even for professionals, doing it yourself seems like a lot of hours. If you have the time and patience good luck, it usually makes sense to let someone who’s done hundreds of rewires do it, you’ll get a better quality job.

Hey Donald. I began following you because you plaster repair you rewires. That’s the direction I have wanted to go in. Do you mind sharing how you found yourself getting involved in taking on the plaster repair of rewiring? You may have already shared this in another video

I was on sites with old time plasters and any tip they would share I would listen. The older guys on job sites often have priceless knowledge learned from years of experience, I would try to listen wherever they talked.

Most historic homes have lime based plaster and you are making patches using gypsum-based material. A bit of a forced marriage. :)
@DonaldMillerElectric
@DonaldMillerElectric Год назад
Lime based plaster is only on the top coat. We still do lime top coats but we usually feather with a skim.
@jsasnou
@jsasnou Год назад
@@DonaldMillerElectric the base coat of old plaster is also lime based. To be more specific, it’s made of non-hydraulic lime (putty lime or hot mixed), graded sand and hair. Modern gypsum plasters (structo-lite) are fundamentally different and they do NOT handle movements, moisture, etc. the same way as traditional lime plasters do. I’m not trying to say that you can’t make a patch with a principally different material (in some cases this won’t cause any problems) but it would be misleading to say that this is “the correct” or “the best” way of doing it.

@@DonaldMillerElectric you can actually get real lime plaster, premixed and ready to go, locally, from Lancaster Limeworks, along with horse hair. It does take awhile to cure but then you get the best possible plaster repair with close match of the material. 👍

@@jsasnou What would you recipe be for matching historic brown coats? Your the first to dive into to this so I’m definitely curious. And thank you for your input.
@jsasnou
@jsasnou Год назад
@@DonaldMillerElectric I used premixed putty lime mortar from Lancaster Limeworks. It comes premixed in a bucket so you don’t have to figure out where to get correct sand and do all the messy mixing work. Just have to add horse hair for the brown coat. Very convenient for smaller repairs (no waste, lasts indefinitely while wet in the bucket) but is a bit pricey if you were to do whole wall plastering.
