+ken taco I really agree with the first point. In Rune Factory, one of my favorite things are the voice clips for characters. It just makes them feel more real. I'm surprised they haven't done the same thing for Harvest Moon yet, considering how Rune Factory is a spin-off.
+Crazed Author I can play rune factory for 8hours± without being boring but hmsos only need less then 2hours cause it only repeat same background music(bgm) when talk to npc
This is actually a super great review of the Harvest Moon/Story of Seasons games. I'd love to hear what you have to say about Trio of Towns. I find it fixed a lot of downsides to the other Story of Season games. Would you consider doing a new Story of Seasons review?
OMG I loved Tree of Tranquility so much. It was my third HM game. ;___; I wish they ported it to 3DS with some upgrades (like the farming mechanism). And you also married the exact hubbies I did! XDDD You go girl~! EDIT: Rival between bachelors and bachelorettes was one of the best thing in ToT. Really miss it.
Oh my gosh, couldn't agree more! I miss the charm that the home console harvest moon games had- I honestly haven't been able to find another good home console harvest moon game until I played Rune Factory Tides of Destiny. Its really similar and really impressed me!
Your cons are too opinionated 1) Well what do you expect? If they made it so you could skip the tutorial, you would have an advantage over a new player since you would have more time to plant 2) I do have to share your opinion on the Bachlorettes. The only one I ended up liking was Licorice, and you only unlock her after year 2! 3) Jeez, you cried because you didn't get a reward for getting all the fields, grow up! Not everything requires a reward. 4) That's why seedling mode was created, so that things would be cheaper. True, the health mechanics in SoS is really one of the weakest aspect of the game. Cant really handle all the field I have with the measly stamina i have. Often time, you need to run to Raeger for food or cook a bunch of food in the morning. Should have made the mechanics similar to power berry like in HM Back to nature. It's more rewarding. But yeah, I agree with your con list sadly. Still a decent HM game though.
I love harvest moon series like you do. My last game was ANB and liked it so much, but I thought that the game map was sooo small D: Well, I'll buy the SoS to see how it is, and your review was very helpful to me Hope I like it, despite it's very cons hahaha Subscribing! :D
Yeah I was super impressed by ANB as well! I loved the characters, and they added so much to the story that it actually got me back into the Harvest Moon series again! I'm hoping the new SoS that comes out in February lives up to the hype!
4 or 5 of the cons on this list are invalid. (I will spoil some things about the gameplay here, look away if you don't want that) -- The tutorial is pretty long compared to other games, but just press b and a a whole bunch of times and quickly sleep through it and it'll go quick. -- Before I get into the stamina system, i admit it sucks early on. I recommend farming as much as you can early game (for tool upgrades) while buying the watering can and hoe blueprint and getting enough iron to unlock them. It's a nice upgrade over the old versions of the two tools and they'll allow you to farm without using up a lot of stamina. You can try to dive for copper before fall and you can probably get 2 for the copper watering can which is better for stamina saving. During fall, mistel will sell copper and you'll get enough in a few days for your copper tool needs. And in the safari (given you upgrade your hammer with the blueprint from cabin country which only takes 2 iron and some easily acquired materials from the foresty areas of the town) silver and gold will be common enough for you to quickly get silver and gold tools. Even in standard mode you can farm smart enough to cover the cost of the blueprints in fall and after that you should have no trouble farming all you want (if you do just go to raeger and he'll cover you with the cheaper dishes he sells on bad days, so you don't collapse three days in a row) -- The conquest system is easy to cheat so long as you wait until fall 1, and unlock the safari by going in the guild house on that day, then mine gems everyday (by having enough carrots so your horse can take you everyday which isn't hard because otmar sells them at 200g which isn't bad by the time you hit fall 1), and keep em in a box. Then on the day before your conquest do all of your daily tasks and then go to the trade depot and save. Sell a couple gems (which are worth 3k~4k ish each which is more than enough to cover the cost of the carrots since you get a few everyday) and if you sell too many (to the point where your earnings are thousands above the other farmers) just reload, sell the amount of gems that will get you slightly above (but not too high above so you save gems for next time) and then claim your farm. -- The prices are fine for planting, just get the seed maker quickly and learn how to upgrade the star quality of your crops from the wiki or something and then you'll make bank. -- At the time of this review I'm not sure if the fogu wiki for story of seasons was up, but now it is and you can look up a lot of the furniture/clothes in the english version of the game, and yes the names will be in english along with how they actually look on a character.
Not to seem rude, because I am not really that kind of person, but you can't really say that her list of cons are invalid. She made this review with her own opinions and that is what reviews are. None of her cons can be invalid, because that is how she feels about the game even though it may not be how you feel.
For the characters... I'm currently playing and I do love Klaus cause I like guys who are a bit old-fashioned with that whole chivalry and gentlemen kinda attitude. He seems pretty perfect to me, if only he didn't always mention his age. Come on, you're not that old xD But yeah...I loved him from the start. Fritz would probably be a second choice, just because I think he is adorable. His clumsy character is just really cute to me. Raeger just seems...rude. Enough said, Nadi as well but I've only just unlocked him in Winter 1 so I haven't talked to him much. Mistel just seems like some depressive kid an makes me wanna take care of him like he's my son, not my man xD Still waiting for Kamil to show up. Think I read he'll be there in Spring 2. And I do like that everything is pretty expensive and you don't have that much stamina that you can't just keep going all day. I mean, I like to play SoS for a long time and in a lot of other Harvest Moon games I felt like I was always done with everything after a year or two years at most and there was nothing more to do, so I needed to start over. In this game, I don't think this will happen here xD
SoS is my first Harvest Moon game. I'm quite enjoying it, aside from the fact that once I've done everything there is to do for me in game, only a few hours have passed and there's still plenty of daylight left lol. As well, the stamina is a bit annoying but other than the accessories option (I didn't even realize that was a thing xD) you can upgrade your tools if you find blueprints. You can get things like silver, gold, master and philosopher tools and it really helps with the stamina, at least for me.

Also been playing HM since it began. I just had a couple questions. So a couple of things you mentioned had to do with your health and how everything was super expensive. For the health part, I was just wondering if you got much into cooking? You can make some pretty decent stuff if you cook regularly and have good quality items (i.e. 4-5 star eggs and salt can make a good fried egg) and just carry a few of those with you every day and you should have more than enough health for all the fields. And as for money, you grow flax right? Turn it into gold linen and you have a pretty solid income, especially when you start bringing up the star level. Two other things that I wanted to mention as cons I noticed, the mining system and fertilizer. I find it hard, like you said, to get the needed ores and gems with the limited mining/ river diving available. It's just frustrating sometimes and yes, I do have to revert to save scumming because I can't get anything good otherwise. As for the fertilizer, for me, there is not enough weeds and twigs to forage, even when I'm buying it from Otmar too, I always feel I'm running out of it. I only fertilize 1-2 plots of each crop I'm growing too. Those are two of the cons I probably would have added. I agree with the cons you mentioned about no rival weddings/ kids, that's something I have always enjoyed. I also thought the bachelors weren't very developed. (p.s. Nadi can be unlocked by walking into Margaret farm between 8-11:30 on a sunny day, not Thursday or a Weekend) But I really like this game even with it's cons. Anyway, good review! I really enjoyed it. ps.s I don't know how you are so far with only playing 40 hrs! I have put in 100 and am just at the end of Spring year 2 now.
Enjoyed your review. Out of curiosity, which would you recommend, this or A New Beginning? While I'm sure I haven't played the series as extensively as you, I've definitely put my share of hours into them, especially when I was younger. My favorite part of Harvest Moon has always been getting to know the Villagers, finding an interesting girl to romance, and the scenery of the towns and the soundtrack. Which do you think I'd be better off getting? Also, I really liked Nami from AWL. Is there anyone a little bit like her in either game? Had to ask. ;) Thanks.
Zyrek1 I would recommend a New Beginning THEN Story of Seasons. The order would work nicely. Story of Seasons has a lot more customization, while a New Beginning has amazing characters & storyline overall. They both have great soundtracks. Out of all the Harvest Moon Games, I'd have to say Magical Melody had the best soundtrack though! Okay as for Story of Seasons, the girl most like Nami would be Angela. From a New Beginning, your girl would be Yuri. I prefer the cutesy type, so my favorite bachelorette was Felicity from A New Beginning!
FlyinKickofDOOM Alright thanks. I started A New Beginning and am really enjoying it so far. The characters seem pretty fleshed out, and, after the pretty slow tutorial, it really moves at a decent pace (From what I've seen so far). My only real gripes so far would be a slightly iffy frame rate and the music is a bit repetitive compared to the console HM's; it's understandable though since it's a handheld game. Really like it so far, can't wait to unlock Yuri. Thanks again.

So far my all time favorite has to be harvest moon animal parade I just loved how you ACTUALLY had TIME and STAMINA to complete tasks in the game and of course the social life.
I can honestly agree with you there. I loved how the children you had with your spouse matched your spouse's hair color! Also, I really loved the overall 'animal parade' theme, it was really cute and charming & made for an interesting story to complete alongside with the harvest goddesses'

I've played quite a while now and Im on my Summer 4th year. Married with Lillie and have 2 kids. I have to tell you that after the wedding you can maximized your stamina by having a proper diet 3 times a day with your family by cooking top notch product such as golden egg/milk otherwise you should go to Raeger to ask for food or go to clinic if its on Thursday, I have like 30million++ now where nothing is expensive but still find myself frustrated in my capabilities of unlocking the tropical country, wonder why wont you put that on the cons list. but I do agree with some of your cons, as of the conquerer section where we can have an expandable farm, and its huge I wonder why we cant ask anybody for Errands, there are other farmers in the town, and of course we can ask our kids if I want to, they're twins and we can put them on different fields for their training. and my last cons is for the other harvest moon games, Well I havent find a harvest moon games with a date-to-remember festival as strong as fomt/btn, I feel bored with most of the festival because its only show display of a character/animal/crops, I missed the mini games (I wont count the fishing, coz its impossible to win with Agate on it) like the chicken festival/tomato festival on HMBTN, and thats definitely the Date I waited for the whole years, I guess thats it for my comment, havent played Trio of Towns yet because I still find my way on unlocking the tropical country, but please do the review of it, I want to know. not to be rude, but a lot of your complaints are leaning towards, "I don't want to do work and want everything handed to me".... we call that an action replay :)
I can understand where you're coming from. But honestly I love the intricate concepts in the Harvest Moon games that require a lot of work (like remodeling, building the town from scratch, etc.) But some of the components that require mindless, repetitious acts (like save scumming) are out of place in a game like Harvest Moon. Rather than concentrating a player's efforts in something super specific (like sewing), the producers could have allocated the efforts more distributively into more diverse recreational activities that didn't require so much concentrated efforts.
The energy consumption is another difference between seedling and original. In seedling mode, you consume half of the energy you consume in original mode. And the small energy boost combos are god awful. The medium boost combo is the next best one where you don't have to have ice and tropical country locked, and I found it works very well for me.
If you still haven't unlocked Nadi, I have your answer (Also, Nadi is life.) He's unlockable from Winter year 1, and you have to go to Elise's farm on a clear day, M-W or Friday between 8 and 1130 am. Poof. One adorably tsun bachelor. Also, in reference to Mistel, the term is shota. Loli is used for girls.
With the health system; the only reason why you have such low health is because when you unlock the blueprints for the better tools, It takes less stamina. I use the master set of tools and have both fields full of crops along with the conquest plots. Though, to make it easier in the beginning, when it turns day 14, try and buy some of the soy cookies and Madeline's Otmar sells. Once the kitchen is available.. Buy it and make sure to have the mats on hand. And make turnip salad. Keep a few on you and then your stamina problem is solved. Now i'm not saying you're wrong on your review, since you made quite a good few points to the con. Especially the health system. But there are easy fixes around it. And the materials for the sewing studio are easier to get since you can buy some of them from the vendors like silk/cabin country. (Or use multi-player with a friend/ someone from the Fogu forums.) Now the pricing! Yes, it is kind of expensive(I guess?) Though that is because you chose original. Seedling mode everything is cheaper and easier to buy.(I prefer Original since it makes buying the stuff more rewarding.) Ok.. Lastly, unlocking the final two vendors(Tropical/Ice country) is a pain in the rear-end. I'm surprised you didn't add that to your con list.. Cause that sure as hell is on mine lol. This is what I mean.. Ice - 100 Fences; 200 Decorations; 200 Gardening; 100 Paths; 100 Furniture; and 100 Walls/Floor. Tropical - 100 Tools; 500 seeds; 15,000 Vesture; 15,000 Cooked; 10,000 Processed; and 600 Wardrobe/Clothes-Accessories. (Exact numbers taken from Fogu.com) Those should also be on your con list as well.. And thats for Veteran/Original. Though I agree with you that it is better then HM the lost valley. Anyway i've said everything i've thought of. Didn't think it would end up being this long.. And I'm sorry for the lengthy post.
Really nice video, I agree with everything pretty much. I miss those interesting characters that made you want to interact with them like the Ones In FOMT, Animal Parade and AWL. So what's your FAV HM game? Mine is probably FOMT or AWL
Very comprehensive review. I had this game for the longest time and just decide to dig into it recently. The excessive amount the farming and time needed, and lack of events really killed it for me :(. I had to look up guides to figure out what I did wrong or why can't I do something, it's a bit frustrating. Oh well, I guess I'll just go play RuneFactory 4~
This was a very good review. Though I think I liked the tutorial due to having anxiety disorder and it rearing it's ugly head every time I try to start something new. But like you said, there should have been an option to skip it for those who wanted to. To be honest, there was ONE single character that had good character development in this game: Elise. Her rival farmer events were all about her character development and then her flower events were ALSO centered on her character development. Other than her though, most of the characters feel very static and boring.

If you are into Harvest Moon and have a computer then you might want to check out Stardew Valley. It's suppose to be a Harvest Moon like farming simulator. And honestly his work doesn't look that half bad. It's already been greenlit on Steam so just waiting for it too come out.
Veteran mode is just a translated version of the regular Japanese game and the beginner mode chnages a few things when the game first came out in Japan no one had a choice between veteran mode or beginner mode so they had to deal with the 7 DAY TUTORIAL
If you get certain combinations of accessories, you can actually have plus effects on health and stamina. :) there are accessory combos that restore your stamina by five points every ten minutes and such, also combos that increase your pets/animals/villagers friendship points. And various combos of decorations on your farm can affect weather and such. The multiplayer options is fun, too. Raising star levels with friends or strangersis always nice, plus you get to trade with a lot of people you meet online or in real life and get goods you normally wouldn't have access to in your part of the game. Aaaannd. About money, processed goods actually sell for a lot! Like 5 star flaxes turned into golden cloth counts for 14000 apiece, I guess which is why everything is so expensive. Oh, and gotta love those super mario-themes crops x) Eheh, sorry about that, couldn't resist! But I lol'ed at Reager's wedding sprite :))) And the story really needs more development. IMO. I love your review though, very detailed! :D Ps. All hail Fogu!
Interesting take. I saw a glimmer of greatness in the story of seasons games, but I guess I'm a part of the fans that felt it was a bit washed out in terms of farming mechanics. I felt that Tale of Two Towns and Animal Parade provided alot more crops, animals and character development. Speaking of TotT, I'd be really interested to hear your opinion on it. No pressure of course. Just hardly anyone seems to mention it when talking about HM.

I agree with everything that you said in this video! I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels this way. Also, did you know that you can only have 2 Angora rabbits per Coop? I had to learn that the hard way after wasting an entire in-game day trying to figure out why I'm unable to move my Angora Rabbits. I was so upset about that I cried. Whoever thought of the idea of having 2 Rabbits per coop is a fucking idiot. I was upset about that part because it ruined my plan of having 4 Silkies, 4 White Chickens, and 4 Rabbits. I mean come on! Didn't the developers even think that a player might just want to raise a coop full of Angora Rabbits?

I was very very wary of getting Story of seasons because Lost valley was complete crap, but I'm extremely glad I did. Though one thing I wish they kept was Tale of two towns cooking without a recipe feature, it'd make figuring out where to get the recipe for coffee alot easier.
I'm getting a NN3DS very soon and am already planning to get Story of Seasons ASAP, but I haven't played any of the other HM portable games. As someone who claims to have played them all are there any others you feel are "must plays" or have the least amount of annoyances as far as gameplay is concerned? I'm also debating between Rune Factory 3 & 4 when I can afford it.
Other than Story of Seasons, I recommend; A New Beginning, Rune Factory 4, and Grand Bazaar (those are in order of most fun). Honestly, the best harvest moon titles are on home consoles, in my opinion. Have you played any yet? what are your thoughts on them?
I've played most of the Nintendo console games and loved them to death, they're some of my most replayed games. Problem being that I've never actually "beat" one because I get bored by mid-fall or early-winter (whenever I unlock most of the things) and end up starting a new file to unlock them again.
I have mix feeling about the new farming, it's too fast. I feel like they were closer to what farming would actually be before, sure it is tedious at time but they were a true experience.

Yeah I think I had a silver watering can during this filming. But it took a while to get up there & it still wears down your health pretty heftily compared to other titles

We are seasoned gamers, playing fallout 4 at the moment, as well as just cause 3. We were missing harvest moon and had pre-ordered A Story of seasons, as it doesn't come out in Au till early January, then we stumbled upon your site and your views helped us a lot. Srsly tho, I agree with the sewing thing. When I built the tailor shop and Yuri moved in I had tons of money and I was so excited cuz I was positive I could buy a real snazzy outfit, BUT NO, I need to gather all my items😅😑
Yeah! They concentrate way too much of a player's efforts into sewing when they could have spent a lot more of their time developing more creative activities for the player to do

Very nice, in-depth review! I haven't played this even though I own it but it's good to know what to expect. I like the idea of adding different difficulties for veteran players, but it sounds like they just made the Hard more punishing with abysmal stamina and ridiculously expensive prices on everything. Harvest Moon to me is the most fun when it's rewarding me and not making me feel like it's an uphill battle. I don't know exactly how they can make a harder difficulty without making it feel like a punishment though... Maybe keep the stamina levels the same in both difficulties, but in Easy mode allow access to a hot spring from the start of the game? And if prices are going to be higher, maybe increase them by 20% not to the point they are over a million for a remodeled home. XD
Yeah exactly! I agree with your views completely. I thought that maybe even making relationships more difficult or perhaps forager items more scarce would also be a good idea to adjust the difficulty variance. I'm hoping to do another review for the Story of Seasons expected to come out at the end of this month, so hopefully they fixed this problem!
I like the idea of making relationships a little bit more difficult. It would be cool if one day they implemented a dialogue response system (like Dragon Age or Mass Effect) so that you can have actual conversations where your response can improve your friendships. I also just preordered Trio of Towns since it's cheaper if you preorder on amazon. I look forward to trying it out and see if they fixed any of the issues! It seems to have gotten pretty good reviews in japan.

Also XD I get your feelings with rivals and children, those were one of the things I loved the most in Tree of Tranquility and Animal Pared, for me, AP, will always be my favorite. Have you played Tale of Twin Towns? Do you recomend it? O: Oh! I think the fishing while swimming option is cool XD.
+Ari cheria I haven't personally played it but from reviews I've heard ir's pretty bad. Not everything is bad, of course, BUT if it rains, shops close even if they are indoors. If it's a holyday, shops close. If it's their weekend, shops close. You may waste so many days unable to buy the seeds you need. So, I recomend watching reviews before buying it as it might be one of the least fun HM games (after the lost valley).
I love the game, but they could streamline the animations better so I wasn't stuck in place when giving treats, or picking things up. I wish it was instant.
Did you never upgrade your tools? And there is a story. But I can agree that many of the characters are uninteresting and that there should have been a better story or more Harvest goddess/Sprite involvement.
I was like .. I've been playing Harvest Moon since I was like 5 .. Of Course I want Challenge *I choosed Original , and then I realized ... that difficulty is way too much of challenge.Health is going down very quick ... I have to eat lots and lots of foods. It's more like time consuming in real time .. coz I don't have much time to spent for just one game. But Let me tell this, Story of Seasons is Great but not perfect ... but it's the coming back of old real taste of HM we loved comparing to other series.Shipping system take me a while to get used to it. Lost Valley was total shi* version of Harvest Moon. After playing Rune Factory 4 ... I can never look the harvest moon same as ever again. They should add a lot of Social Systems. Romance.More Interesting Characters. Story Events like I don't know ... a lot of random sub cut-screens stuffs. Easter-eggs , Mysteries and so on.Well .. I'm still enjoy this SoS much more compare to other series that are on DS. Hoping for New one to be much more better.

Ashley (dark-nebula-whispers) oh you mean like selling your items to the venders? I applaud the developers at trying to be creative, but it was a hassle and difficult to get used to. Each vender had specific preferences and days that they even visited the town which made for close calls on the Conquer Days :O also, I dislike that the price raises and drops willy nilly- it forces you to ship stuff for way under price!
What I also hated was the stupid dating system which they kept from New Beginning. You have to give your dude a ring to date them in order to unlock yellow and pink flower events? You barely know much about the characters with just the first two flower events, how are you supposed to choose? :l
all in all, i think everything has just gotten much more fake and watered down in the series. i remember playing games like tranquility, island of happiness (shh i like it) and some the gameboys games and thinking of each game as a fun little town brought to life by vibrant characters and social dynamics. the characters have become super boring and seem to all be made in an image that developers would think the players would like (as in one huge harem) instead of individual characters with personalities just for the sake of being special and different and realistic. i don't care how hot reager is, he's boring as hell. i'd rather just skip that whole part of the game than go through such a long process of "wooing" a boring fruitcake and wasting so much time on a optional storyline with the depth of a kiddy pool. really, its quite sad.
I cant be bothered to play that much SoS. I definitely prefer The Lost valley, believe it or not. All Story of Seasons does is look pretty on my shelf. It could have same sex marriage and I'd still hate it. And as for story, try the bachelorettes. They're always better. Elise, at lease, has the most character development in her rival events. You don't even have to be a boy for those! What are you doing! (To my knowledge, TLV has character development. It sure as fuck has a story, that's for sure. Graphics could be better but bitch i got a story. That's what motivates me.) Reasons I hate sos: Things I can unlock but won't because I can't be bothered, things I can do but won't because they're unnecessary, terrible interface and mechanics, characters are constantly swaying from side to side, the 3d models are ugly, (I don't even like the intro) no character development and NO STORY (deal-breaker). Ironic for a game with story in the title. Sorry. I usually write more eloquently, but this game really.... it's boring. This video is 15 minutes long.
Oh and also the heath bar. In previous titles you could get more but not here! (Wow you also really haven't bothered with Elise if you don't have Nadi. For shame.)
UshioKiss yeah I noticed how ironic the title was too- its sad how much potential story of seasons had but lost! I really wish they put more effort into story & character development, because they soared through the roof with customization. The Lost Valley had very little customization and choice systems. I could hardly stand to play it for more than just a couple days.
julie martinez I don't want to be just given things, I want things to be in reach. You have to ship like 100 of a rare, useless item to unlock half of the countries and then some.
FlyinKickofDOOM Well, previous games didn't have that much customization, so it never really bothered me. I think if they just had the town, it would have been better for more people. You can customize your appearance when you buy the closet, and you can customize where things go, and how your fields look, and that's about it. I don't really have much use for customization, lol.
