Bernese mountain dogs typically have a good-natured personality. Hallmarks of their temperament include their gentle nature and eagerness to please. With proper socialization, they can be open to meeting strangers and are quite affectionate with their families.
The Bernese mountain dog originated in Switzerland around the city of Berne, for which it is named. Its ancestors came to the area thousands of years ago and descend from Roman mastiffs, among other dogs. Today, the Berner is one of four varieties of Swiss mountain dog, set apart by its longer and silkier coat. The other three varieties are the Greater Swiss mountain dog, the Entlebucher mountain dog, and the Appenzeller mountain dog.

This documentary should be required watching for every person interested in a BMD. Berners are great, the best dog I've ever owned and I'll probably always have one. I love how people respond to them. They just make people smile. That said, New owners have to commit to training and socialization. Do that and you'll have the sweetest companion that you can take anywhere.

She made a mistake by saying Entles aren’t AKC recognized when in fact they are fully recognized by AKC as part of the herding group and are number 168 out of 195 fully recognized AKC breeds, and the Appenzeller is recognized by AKC aswell but is still in the foundation stock service portion and can’t show in the regular big shows yet

First time I met a BMD I was in the woods in NH. A female ran right up to me no owner in sight and sat with me for a while wanting pets until her owner found us. The owner said she was surprised she was with us since she’s normally very aloof to strangers (I was pregnant, so maybe that’s why she wouldn’t stop sniffing and cuddling up on me)

We had a berner years ago when they were still a relatively rare breed. Unfortunately, he died of lymphoma which is VERY common in the breed. If you are considering a Bernese Mountain dog, you should be aware of this fact. "Lymphoma or lymphosarcoma is a type of cancer that afflicts Bernese Mountain Dogs more than other breeds. This disease makes the body form abnormal lymphocytes, which are a type of white blood cell. Because white blood cells can be found throughout the body, this cancer can show up almost anywhere." He also was an extremely challenging puppy and had fairly high anxiety as an adult dog.

I have a BMD and she's awesome. Super loyal, extremely smart/intuitive, strong, loving, easy going. She's also protective. Not super friendly with strangers like a lab or golden retriever, but not aggressive. Defensive. A bit like a mastiff mixed with a collie. They make good flock guardian dogs too.
@lenavoyles526
@lenavoyles526 Год назад
What is your experience with them as a flock guardian? I hear the die hard livestock guardian folks go on about how “Berners are not a true livestock guardian”, but they seem to have some traits that could be very desirable on the small homestead (loyalty, less wandering, trainability, quieter). I’m curious to hear from anyone who has used them as flock guardians.

I had the sweetest bernese mountain dog towards the end of my teenage years. Having had grown up with two labs and aussie before that... bernese have somewhat of a flat affect or something. They almost look like there's less going on up there than other dogs. kind of an air head vibe to them. The bond between one never felt as "intimate" as with my labs getting attached to one person. It was more so an all around happy dog for everyone. But amazing dogs nonetheless, one I'm surprised is not much more popular

I can speak, since I am one BMD. My humans think I am the best dog they ever had, but I am not for beginners. I am friendly towards people I know and live with, but aloof to strangers - and hostile if they insist on touching me if I don't want them to. I am ok with females and smaller dogs, but I don't tolerate other large male dogs (like German Shepherds, Rottweilers and other Bernese males). I have a very dominant trait and a tendency to guard places I am in too. That said, Berners are great dogs.

I do have one, had dogs before, my Prince and the revolution Bernese was never trained, never educated and never went to dog classes. He doesn't need it, it seems to us, that he understands naturally what we are saying and he follows what we say. It's like magic. Saying he is in his way intelligent. The wolfhound I had before was a different animal :-)

Okay this is off topic but I just had a question. Do any of you in the comments think it is ethical (in the dog world) to own a specific breed of dog that was bred for a purpose; i.e hunting, livestock guarding and not use that dog for that purpose, but instead use it for something else like a companion dog?
@tylerwilliams3861
@tylerwilliams3861 2 года назад
I'd say 50/50 cuz most dogs like human companionship in small or big amounts. Though if you get one from the best mallinois breeder in the world that works their dogs in all these sports it would be a waste rather than just getting one from a companinion breeder or getting a high energy dog and then wanting it to be a potato. That's why I say 50/50.
@watchingandwaiting9
@watchingandwaiting9 2 года назад
From what I've seen, some dogs are fine not fulfilling their breeds purpose and just being a companion. Most dogs will find a way to try to do what they were breed for, so if you want a high energy independent breed be ready to fulfill those needs. Every dog is unique and not all adhere to breed standards.

Danni is correct, you can get any dog but don't be surprised if you cannot meet its requirements or if the dog gets destructive/territorial/not good with kids, etc. because you're using the dog for something else. This is why buying from a reputable breeder is strongly suggested because they will question you to make sure their dogs goes into a home that's prepared.

Thanks for this comment Rob as I believe if you are thinking this, then others likely may be as well so I am happy to have the opportunity to comment. It helps to understand the purpose of dog shows - it was always to evaluate breeding stock and ensure they met the breed standard. We should all care about this because as Alaina so nicely pinpointed at 4:56 in the video, judges should be looking at structure and movement to ensure the dog is orthopedically sound and capable of doing what it was bred to do. Even pet buyers should want an orthopedically sound dog that will not be injury prone and rack up a bunch of vet bills. Most surgeries are very expensive..... and very genetic. Hope that helps.
@tylerwilliams3861
@tylerwilliams3861 2 года назад
@@naturalk9694 shows did cause many breeds to be short lived now and go to extremes which is why I say they need reform cuz English bulldogs are prime examples of what the shows do because they say flat face so ppl say the flatter the better though it affects their health. P.s. they have structural problems as well and don't breed or give birth easily without interference.
