Funny enough, my favorite palette cost me $0.82 at my local thrift shop from the plate section. It's a ceramic version of one of those plates that have walls in the middle for picky kids who don't like their food touching haha (don't we all remember those days). I went back there 6 months later and they had ANOTHER one so now I have two so I can clean it when I feel like it lol.

Hullo Emily, Nice selection of palettes. I would offer this insight, Put tape on the side of your palettes and write the paint colors even brand if you mix brands or pigment numbers if your not brand specific. You can also use the lids for naming as well as your swatch sheets! Easier to get more info down on the swatch sheet too! I prefer the metal ceramic coated Butcher trays, If you drop them they do not break and better for those of us who may be a bit more clumsy! They travel quite well too! Have you ever looked into the James Gurney pattern for a Plein Air set up? It is free and easy to make your own and put your favorite painting palettes as well as favorite papers too! He has several wonderful videos here on RU-vid!

I’ve tried lots of different pallets too and the mijello 18 well is also my favourite for watercolour. Well designed, portable and a lot tougher than I expected. Mine has been dropped on hard tiled floors several times and it’s still in great shape.

This is a great video! Love the plastic 18-well Mijello palette! I have my M. Graham set in that. I found two 10” square ceramic plates at Home Goods that I love to use as mixing areas or temporary palettes for trying new colors. Plus they stack after the paint has dried and I can use the “palette dirt” to paint with too later. 😊👍🏽🖼️

Fabulous palette tour! I love your Jackson’s 19 well palette. I have the cheap Joes version and love it! I have the larger too many well version and what you said really hit home. Too manyWells means too many colour choices that can get confusing and overwhelming. Also I seldom use many of the colours I loaded into some of those wells years ago and now have begun to dig them out ( such a waste! ) I prefer using primary colours of all values and temps and mixing my own secondary and tertiary colours. That porcelain butchers tray was beautiful! Ouch the shipping must have hurt all the way from the UK. Fun video! Love your channel. That self portrait looks amazing too! I think the second palette from jacksons has more a dust cover, than solid cover. I think so far from observation of other artists, the Geoff Kersey porcelain paletter with porcelain lid is best.

Have been focused on watercolor painting for about a year now so I’m just a beginner. I heard ceramic is better than plastic. I am happy to hear you like plastic which is all own. The palette I currently use the most does not have a separate mixing area. Thanks for the insight.

I love the flower palettes. I have several (they're "self-lidding" if you stack them, though they still collect kitty hairs and dust if you leave them too long). When I saw the butcher's tray, I braved my way into a warehouse dump store (Ollie's I think) and found one for like, $2! I use it, and easy clean up, but I store my tubes in a fingernail polish things (but tight fit; those have to go), and I pour by brand into the tin palettes (full pans, rip out the metal holder and line full pans up to go in half pan space with magnetic tape; fits 22 but doesn't work too well except for storage). Mainly I use the full pan tins as a testing guide for the tubes, but I tell myself I can pull the fuIl pans and stick em in some kind of a plein air "set". 😄 If it ever stops being winter, that might work!

every time i research palettes i come back to the one i use which is a modified/hacked koi sakura watercolor palette set. i cut out the extruded plastic pan set, put a thin piece of sheet metal in the bottom and attached magnets to half pans filled with DS paints. the inside of the lid and the removable 5 compartment palette tray is plenty of space for mixing and can easily move them around.

Would love if you did a video about the 18 colors in your go-to plastic pallette. I want to invest in about 18 professional colors that are great for both portraits and landscapes but I'm having trouble narrowing it down in both brand (I plan to do a mixture of brands) and pigment.

I have a comment on the small Jackson palette. I use change out colors on that smaller palette a lot and I have a heck of a time cleaning out those little corners. Probably just me, but I can't get all the paint out of the corners and it contaminates the new colors I want to put into them.

Ok, maybe I’m in total lala dreamland here, but here goes. What if there was a palette (either ceramic or 3D printed) “engineered” with a turntable function with dual tiered sections for the artist to create a ColorWheel palette. That way they can have primary and secondary wells for warm and cool primary’s, with the secondary mixes. I see it in my head, but I don’t have a 3D printer, or ceramic kiln in my studio! It would be heavy, definitely just a studio luxury, but wouldn’t it be cool? I’m hereby claiming the idea of it doesn’t already exist. 🤓

Thank you for the video 😊 One question : how do you prevent a plastic palette from beading? I have tried using stick glue (put a thin layer and then remove it with a cloth) but it is not a permanent solution. Anything else I can try?
@EmilyOlsonArt
@EmilyOlsonArt 2 года назад
You can wash it with soap and water with a scrubber to help the plastic not be so slick. Just using the palette for a few days should solve the problem, too. 😊
