It's worth mentioning that for the purposes of barrels and furniture, it takes roughly a third the material when using rock for pots and furniture as compared to wood. In my opinion, the best material for pots is jet. Pots hold the same amount as barrels and jet pots in particular are lighter than most barrels.
@Ascaron1337
@Ascaron1337 Год назад
Can you elaborate on the difference in material usage? I somehow don't get it 😕
@giantmanice
@giantmanice Год назад
@@Ascaron1337 different materials have different properties, the less dense material is less dense when made into a finished product as well. You can select what material by clicking the magnifying glass next to the work order or task
@Ascaron1337
@Ascaron1337 Год назад
@Patrick Thrasher I get that part, no worries. What I didn't understand is how the "one third the material" weighs in on that. Don't you need a log per barrel and a boulder per pot? Or do you make 3 pots per boulder?
@IreneSaltini
@IreneSaltini Год назад
@@Ascaron1337 I think pots are still produced as one pot per input item, but for some reason they are lighter. I tested it out and an orange wood pot is 2Γ, versus 11Γ for an orange wood barrel. To counter the original point, though, you can just make wooden pots instead of stone pots, they’ll be even lighter (a jet pot is 6Γ, so indeed it is lighter than an average wooden barrel, but still heavier than a wooden pot).
@Guts3570
@Guts3570 Год назад
@@IreneSaltini i think the point of using stone instead of wood is to reduce how much wood you need for your workshops. if you want to stay at peace with elves, or if you're in a biome that has very little wood, you have to save most of your wood for beds. if you can get pots that weigh a little less or the same as a wooden barrel that's good enough. ceramic is probably the best option for pots if you have clay.

It's also worth mentioning you can buy nether cap logs at embark and in my experience they are always available and cost the same as other wood. So it is wise to get nether cap logs at embark, use them to quickly throw down workshops near the wagon and then later use them to make corkscrews and pipe sections for magma safe pumps.

Good info. A couple additional uses for this info: Wooden weapons: For hammerer (if you want to give hammerer a weapon at all) a very light wooden blunt weapon may be better than no weapon at all. Alternatively, if you're doing a hard embark of some sort where you have no access to metal (yet), elf-style weapons may be all you can make. Heavier wood might be better than unarmed if you want to get your military trained for eventual better weapons. Who knows, they might even work okay against animals. Sorta. Might be better for hunting bolts also. Hmm, need to compare heavy wood to bone bolts for effectiveness. And factor in the different stack sizes (25 wood bolts vs whatever current bone bolt stack is... 10?) in efficiency of hunting. Hunters using small stacks of bolts waste a lot of time running back and forth. Probably applies to ballista bolts also if you're into siege weapons. Containers: Lighter wooden pots and bins, and wheelbarrows and minecarts, are always nice. Save the heavier wood for wall-building, blocks, fixed furniture (beds!), waterwheels, windmills, axles, etc. For trade goods, lighter is better due to caravan weight constraints. Especially if you trade large tools (minecarts/wheelbarrows.)

the Main difference between the wood is the Weight NO -> ist the COLOR =D also in ash- there is no difference in weight and color xD so Wood is all the same =D Also heavier wood is better for Bolts.... because of the Physics behind the system. Maybe its also more usefull for building trap componants or just for the Dwarven shotgun... edit: i have to admit, that after reading the wikipage about bolts .. the weight of bolts dont have any influence it seems... the sharpness is a better indicator for bolts and therfore wood is shit. .. all woods...

Since wood is so colorful, does it count when a dwarf that likes the given color sees it, or is only when the item is specifically dyed?
@Ic0nGaming

As far as it would work, without dye. If they like red, they'd like to see Bloodthorn cause it's red.

Is there some way to use Nethercap to make a refrigerator or other method to keep food from spoiling? Do NetherCap Barrels have any effect on drinks contained in them?
@Ic0nGaming
@Ic0nGaming Год назад
To stop food from spoiling it just has to be stored in a stockpile. Doesn't matter if it's in a container or not - Stockpile magically preserves stuff. If you accept any form of Refuse in the stockpile it starts to degradate stuff in the stockpile again though.

Could wooden weapons be good for justice and capturing when you set your militadwarves as dungeon keepers to reduce the chances of accidental fun?
@knibknibknib
@knibknibknib Год назад
Yes, your hammerer should always have a feather wood hammer when possible. Training weapons of light wood I think also help for beating up naked pitted goblins for training your soldiers. But the better way to train soldiers is a “danger room” with featherwood spike-traps. And although more effective, the live training battle logs are much more entertaining than danger room battle logs.

Was doing some research, but couldn't find the info on how to make subterranean trees grow, used to be easy in previous versions, but now they never seem to grow past the sappling phase.
@AristophMarloque
@AristophMarloque Год назад
I'm under the impression that subterranean trees will only grow beyond saplings if there is at least 5 z-levels of open air above them. EDIT: I'm not sure if they need horizontal room for the "foliage" to spread out at the top, or if you can get away with a single column of air above them to produce essentially just a tall trunk.
@Swordphobic

@@AristophMarloque Had a 3 z levels underground pasture that I hopped would also produce wood, guess I'll make a deeper one next time.

Historically, heavy woods were better for ballista bolts too due to their weight but someone may want to confirm if this is still true. Heavier bolts for more damage so glumprong iirc was THE wood for that. I stopped playing heavily around 0.39 and there have been a lot of chances since.
@Ic0nGaming
@Ic0nGaming Год назад
Since weight was always a factor in all damage calculations I saw mentioned, I bet that heavy bolts = more damage for sure. How much it adds to the metal tipping of a ballista bolt I don't know.

Ash of which wood can be used for glazing? My dwarfs with one bar of ash glaze only once. This bar do not disappear. Game wiki said that you can use one bar for glazing 150 clay crafts. But that don't work. Ash just lay in stockpile, but kiln say: there is no glazing item. What's wrong? We need guide about glazing
@AnalystPrime

Was there a rule about which stockpiles the workshop can use? Or maybe another kiln had reserved that same ash? Route blocked by something or the ash was in a bin? If none of the above, guess it is a bug.

@@AnalystPrime, don't know. Hospital don't working because diagnostic dwarf don't want to do their job) After glazing, ash bar have stopped to be ash bar.
