Don't forget to balance your blades after you sharpen them: • Blade Balancer Battle ...
Is the $280 All American 5005 Blade Sharpener worth the extra money over the knockoff competition from Amazon? There are a lot of very similar products from Wish, Amazon, Ebay and AliExpress, but are they any good and can they replace the original?
This is a review of one of the more popular blade sharpeners. Remember, it's important to keep a sharp mower blade, no matter if you use an angle grinder, bench grinder, file or drill attachment. Also, we'll talk about how to sharpen a lawn mower blade.

@@TurfandStem Here’s my one and only question; was the knock off system made in America or was it copied and made in China or some other foreign country??? The answer to that question is why I’d pay a $180 difference!!! If both are made in America, then I’d go with the knock off version and save $180!!!

I will admit that often times I will often go for the cheapest or "best value" deal. Why wouldn't someone want to do that? However, often times the cheapest deal is not the best. I usually read the one star reviews first for products to get a good idea of what people find wrong with them. Here, I found multiple issues with these knock offs including initial defects, failures over time and lack of customer support. Because of this I just purchased an All American Sharpener from their website for $220 with free shipping and a lifetime warranty. Yes, I paid more, but I'm getting a quality product and one that is not infringing on a US patent. The products may appear to be the same but there are differences and those differences may make a difference. If you buy a knock off I wish you good luck - or maybe not.

I purchased the knock-off, but the plan is to let it pay for an All-American in the not-too-distant future to support The American Company. I DID purchase the Honda blade adapter kit from All-American and I can verify that it works with the knock-off very well. That's another reason for buying an All-American as well. I bought the 5002 model from AAA’s in 2019. It was designed to do the 2 different angled mulching blades. Took a chance but I could only sharpen the John Deere inner blade at 30 degrees on the setting for the outer portion of blade. The shims I tried didn’t work that well. The rest of blade I had to do manually. So it sat for five years. Bought an eXmark recently and ran into same problem with mulching blades. I love the precision of this device but can only use it on half my blade. Hindsight, I should have purchased the 5005 originally but now I’m at an impasse. My 5002 has unsuccessfully sharpened 2 blades. I love the customer service of AAS but don’t want to buy another device at full price knowing it may not work and have 2 AAS devices sitting around my shop gathering dust. They did not offer me a discount or return/trade in option but made some other shim recommendations to try. I like these people but am tempted to try the knock off and keep my fingers crossed.

That's a tough one. Honestly, the All American (or any similar jig type) just isn't worth anywhere near $200+ dollars. There are so many more choices once you enter that price range. If you have to buy two AABS's, then that's $500+......if you're spending that much money just buy a Magna-Matic, an Oregon or a Vevor, all of which come with the grinder. The 1/3 HP Oregon is around $250. The knock-offs are around $50 now, worse case scenario is it doesn't work and you put it on FB Marketplace for $40. Or with Amazon's return policy, send it back in 30 days.

I bought a $65 clone sharpener on Amazon and it is also identical to the All American. I would like to support made in America products but the clone was $200 cheaper so I just couldn't justify the price difference. I saw your blade balancer review and I also bought an Oregon clone that works perfectly for much less money. If the price difference were closer I would have went with the originals but price gouging isn't in my budget. I though you were very objective in both reviews.

I did look at this USA sharpener a few years ago but in the UK it was stupidly stupidly expensive for what it was - so i decided to make one using my milling machine and lathe. I had no dimensions to work from but managed to get it pretty much spot on for my needs. Using CNC batch manufacture I can see how the unit cost of these things is going to be pretty cheap. Yes I know you have got to pay for the R+D etc. and everyone has got to turn a coin, but I think All American Sharpener have just been too greedy. I dare say if they would have sold it for circa £60 / $100 they would have sold so way more units and the Chinese would have not seen an opportunity to undercut them....... real shame! If they drop their price now then it's going to upset all those customers who paid over the odds before.

I to am in the UK and can't believe the price difference between Amazon and ordering direct from the manufacturer. Unfortunately the UK, in my opinion, isn't really set up for sharpening business as pretty much all the hardware you need for running your business comes from America. I think I might take a punt on the 'knock-off' version and see how I get on. It might bite me in the arse but at least I won't have shelled out £300.

If you think this product is an example of the business being greedy, you're an imbecile who doesn't understand the cost of domestic manufacturing, research and development, paying employees a living wage... the video here is evidence enough alone the Chinese clone literally lifted the design and even shamelessly stole the instructions. There was zero R&D costs involved, and obviously it costs far, far, far less for Chinese material and labor as opposed to building domestically.

Pricing has a lot to do with it as well.

I agree with this video, I just purchased the knock off brand for 60 dollars on Amazon. I just couldn't justify paying almost 230 dollars for All Americans brand, when they both do the same thing. I researched both. No big difference except for on the All American has extra markings I guess your pay for those markings by a higher price point.

Yeah, the price has been dropping! I paid around $100 for mine, now they're $60 and under. For that price, it's tough to say no with today's inflation.

I understand why most people would opt for the much cheaper, almost exact copy of the original. What almost every single person in the comments I've read don't understand are the economics of US made vs China made. With the US version you're paying for the research and development, the innovation and the labor costs of US manufacturing. When buying the Chinese version, which required 0% development or innovation, you're only paying for material cost and sweat shop labor costs. That is why the price is nearly 5 times less.

I don't know what you do for a living but let's say you come up with an idea that saves the company a ton of money but all the credit goes to you boss. He gets the bonus, he gets the credit. That's basically what you are talking about here. Clearly you support your bosses decision. MAGA: Make America Genuflect Again.

and as an employer outsourcing to people slaving for peanuts sounds better than paying american employees a living wage.
