The greatest thing about this video is seeing the sheer amount of homebrew programmers that make the best out of that 1977 hardware (I was born in late 1983, so go figure). Goes to show the 2600 and its contemporaries still retain their old magic. And I hope it's for many years from now.
I'm from 1988 and have an Atari obsession. I got into it just a year or 2 ago after realizing how fun it was. Had a 2600 "VCS Light Six" in the closet my whole life, only nostalgic to the small library my uncle had. Now I discovered all the other games especially after 1982. They got really good. I wasnt aware how long its lifespan was. Still finding more.
@@Lightblue2222 There's plenty of simulators online where you can play the game within your web browser. There's really no reason to have actual hardware today, the simulations are perfect. The system is simulated perfectly.
@@joetaylor197 I'd bet money that he got shadowbanned. I don't know for the LIFE OF ME why people insist on ONLY posting on RU-vid. This is the WORST site for communication and sharing information at this point.
Its amazing to see the amount of creativity of its engineers back then. The so called modern Games that we see today are directly or indirectly ported from that time. Heck even the names are same for some of the best games right now.
The 1st console I've ever played with as a 5 year old, in a black and white TV, in a far far away Sunday morning somewhere around 1985-86, after having skipped the mass at the local church! lol
13:10 - Bee Ball, that's really cute :D At Duck Attack (39:31) I started suspecting that these are not just the original games but has some newer releases as well. A friend of mine had this Atari 2600 clone with almost all the games built in and you cycled through them with a lever. There were no title screens so I didn't know any of the games, I could only find them today by trying to describe how it played. That's how I found MASH. But for other obscure games I need to watch this whole thing. I remember liking Mr Postman for it's weird visuals and sounds (1:26:55) 2:24:01 - THAT'S IT! This was the game I was looking for! Thnk you for making this video!
i wasnt born for the original atari 2600, or any of the other atari systems but My mom bought me a few of them lil 20$ Greatest hits plug and play things you plug in the tv and boy did i have a blast with games like river raid and space invaders. Im lookim to find the games again for my emulator. These games may not be as graphiclly inpressive as the newer games but i dont care. Fun. Thsts alll that matters
hey if you want all the games in one fatal swoop I have them all, unzipped in the correct format and everything like that. let me know and I will burn it to a CD at no cost to you. I will even include the Atari 800 games and programs complete with emulator and bios roms all in the correct format unzipped. complete sets for both systems
I remember seeing my 1st one in a shop in Tottenham court rd London. Must have been 1979/80 . I thought it was amazing. The last official release was KLAX in 1990. Some of the games are baffling , some of the shoot em ups still look good
AVGN Boxing? I didn't know that existed until now. I'm a fan of AVGN. Some of these games are obviously homebrews. I first played atari 2600 in 1990 at age 7 or 8. I just recently bought the atari flashback 9 and I love many of the games. It's amazing how many of these games are still fun after 35-40+ years. I love games like jungle hunt, pitfall, river raid, berserk, mario bros, popeye, space invaders, missile command, centipede, enduro and others. I don't always like every atari game, but If I dislike one it's because of the game play and not the graphics. Some people are graphic snobs who prefer only new games. But I can overlook the early graphics if the game play is good.
I knew this video was 2 hrs long for some reason. Cuz i know the major players were atari, activision, imagic, and parker Bros. (Ashleigh there were others but these were the main ones) i also noticed that the porn games aren't here LMAO
I recall another River Raid-like game. The plane was thinner and you could fly without boundaries, shooting down stuff. Dark blue plane over green background or something.
Sin duda el compendio más completo de juegos de Atari, gracias, Excelente trabajo. Hasta rarezas como nightmare, planet Patrol y subterránea están en la lista.
Thanks for evoking sweet childhood memories. I never played the Atari bec. I found the joystick difficult to control. My eldest brother (who owns the console) and other elder siblings were always the one who played for me. I esp. remember these games: Frogger; Asteroids (?); PacMan; and Midnight Rider (?). Btw, does anyone here know the title of an Atari game in which the game cartridge's design contains a labyrinth and a dragon. A key is what you must find in the game if my memory still serves me well. Anyway, thanks in advance.
My search continues. I remember a top down game. Flat color backgrounds. Could move any direction. I remember a human shaped character. Only one time I made it to some screen with a diagonal rain type effect for the background. I died there and never made it back.
I'm searching the name of a very cool game that I can't find anywhere. You play with 5 large triangle shaped planes in formation. The background is rolling down, and you have to avoid enemies or obstacles. Imho one of the best 2600 game.
There was this game it had a chef who used a ladder to build a cake and when he reaches the skies a helicopter picks him up. If he didn't do the right shape it drops back to ground or get hits by a lightening but I don't remember the name of the game.
And remember, it wasn't about the graphics it was about the gameplay. In the 70s and 80s this is what you had. That doesn't count for the homebrew games though. A lot of these games i owned and played regularly and still do
Didn't know that the xbox classic halo begun here that was one of my childhood games growing up on the xbox360 other then the remakes of banjo kazooie and banjo tooie sonic qnd minecraft
Be honest, who the hell could figure out what to do in ET and Indiana Jones among other Atari games? You had to get lucky to figure out what you were supposed to be doing.
Really interesting backstory about Custer's Revenge, it was probably the first video game controversy that ever made the national news. For those that don't know, the plot of the game was, you play General Custer and you have to kill Indians and make your way to an Indian women at which point you...ah...have your way with her. Needless to say not very politically correct even by 1982 standards....
Ghostbusters,Pitfall, Yars revenge, centipede. No clue where they are on here. Cause of the sound couldn't watch it now 😂 how the fxxk did we put up with that.
These may be all Classic games, however new games have been made for the VCS 2600 for years - these are missing here. RETURN magazine reports on these new games for this system and many other systems (NES/ SNES, Commodore 64, PlayStation, Sinclair, Sega Master System / Genesis, Atari 8-bit & 16-bit and a lot of more). If you want to know more about new games for classic computers and consoles, you should subscribe to RETURN magazine: www.return-magazin.de
I don't understand why this vid looks so good.. The 2600 game don't look good on a HD tv.. And the old box tv's have big pixels???.. What are you playing these through???
Man some these games are bad, it is hard to describe what it was like to wait all year long for Christmas to roll a round and get a video game and pop it into the 2600 just to see how bad it was... they were so expensive and back then all you had to go off was the box art from the Sears or JC Penny catalog.
Unfortunately, of the 500 or so titles released for the system only about a hundred are any good, thanks to effective use of sound, simplicity, and tight programming. Between all the companies that were just jumping on the bandwagon and lacklustre programming, it's no wonder so many games look awful, sound awful, and are as dry as the Gobi desert.
Yeah pretty much. There were maybe 25 games that were truly great and innovative. Another 50-75 that were pretty solid and the rest were varying degrees of boring, repetitive, near unplayable or just cheap clones of the good games.
Some games are very agressive with there sounds fx😔. There are many games identical with only the name change? For exemple : karate = kung fu. Some games are just uggly and bad/sad to play😩.
