After only hearing this song one the radio, had no idea the piano concerto in the middle even existed. Beautiful. We were ripped off.

ERIC CARMEN wrote and sang this song in 1975. he is 73 years old now. Bonnie Tyler did a cover of this song and so did Celine Dion in the 90s. one more thing, Eric Carmen is a pianist. you have to watch Eric Carmen sing this live in his concert.

I was hanging out on Twitter a few years ago, and ran across Eric…he used to post on the platform! I grew up six miles outside of a small town of 800 people in the middle of nowhere in Wyoming…this is one of the songs that strongly resonated with me, and was a companion of sorts. I related that to Eric, thanking him for being such an important part of my young life…..and he answered me!! 😊👍🎉 His response was a highlight for me in this life…. I closed a circle 😊❤

I bought the album in 1975 and still listen to it. There is no other version of this song for me. The guitar sounds like George Harrison but it's studio musician Hugh McCracken. Back in the day, the only way you could hear the full version of the song was on the FM stations. AM would only play the radio edit version which I won't listen to.

Starting around 4:18, that is literally taken from Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2, second movement. Eric is a classically trained pianist. He thought the concerto was in the public domain, by the point he wrote this song. He found out differently. $$$

The verse is taken directly from Piano Concerto No. 2 in C minor, Op. 18: Adagio Sostenuto (the second movement). So it's recognizable immediately as soon as he starts singing after the piano intro. The settlement with the Rachmaninov estate was for 12% profits from all the sales of "All By Myself" and "Never Gonna Fall In Love Again," which was based on Rachmaninov's third movement of his Symphony No. 2. Celine Dion has a lot to answer for. The song has been reduced to a top note. The poignancy of the lyrics (which Carmen sings with exemplary clarity - Dimash please note) and the beauty of Rachmaninov's composition get lost in a vocal high-jump competition.

Celine has nothing to answer for or apologize for. Eric's version is his version and yes, it is perfection and not to be surpassed. CD has a beautiful voice and I love her version too. Sure, I can't love anyone's like Eric's because I frickin WORE OUT THAT 45 in the 70s. :-)

@@Ozymandi_as Totally get it. I feel like there are some singers who rely on their voice as a tool and use it that way (Celine does fall into this category, Mariah Carey, Christina Aguilera). They tend to try to show you they can hit certain notes. But I still like her. hehe But I can see why you feel that way and it certainly is different than the feeling you get when Eric sings this song. You feel like he is living this. You feel like Celine may just be singing about what it would feel like to feel these feelings.

Carmen was trying to carve out a solo career after splitting from the Raspberries, so wrote this song. You might find the story behind the song interesting. Just one note from the vid link, that the testing centre determined 97% that this song would NOT be a hit (so Arista execs didn't want it to be the first single off the album). 🙏🙏 you are right Matt, this interpretation is magnificent. This song is for him. I came to listen after your reaction to Dimash. On the one hand, this 'worl's best' show is almost ridiculous, it mistreats artists, it lies. And on the other hand, Dimash's soul is not really there in this performance. 💐💐💐💐💐 😲 Oh I just found out it's HIS song. The musical arrangement is absolutely perfect, you are still right Matt
