Parrt 3 of our DIY Concrete Countertop series, the finishing touches! Bryan discusses the important aspects of polishing, acid staining and the epoxy final coat for our kitchen counters.
This video is a bit a longer to show all three steps, so we save the fun part, installing into our kitchen for the next video!

@@ColoradoMountainLiving Thanks for video. I have an outdoor countertop that is red but faded. the clearcoat is peeling. Question: if I sand with 100 grit, you believe that will take off the red finish? Perhaps I need to re-color anyway :-) I was hoping I could take off clear coat layer and reapply without losing the red finish.

The countertops turned out nice. I’ve never seen this done and it does take an artistic eye to decide when to apply the neutralizer. When applying the epoxy is it better to use the trawl or roller on the top surfaces, I’m sure you guys know why the trawl would be better but the roller seemed to make the application a lot easier. Either way they turned out great, getting them up to the kitchen may take a couple “hunks” to help you.
@ColoradoMountainLiving
@ColoradoMountainLiving 5 лет назад
Thanks! I think we were wanting to keep the "thickness" on top, but perhaps a light touch with the roller would have worked. The edges just have a bare coating.

Amy and Brian the counter tops look amazing well done on a good job. Maybe if you were to fill In the dimples before staining and the apoxy pour it would of got rid of the dimples but in saying that it is absolutely beautiful job all round. love the colour and I love the effects of the apoxy. sending big hugs from The Land Down Under . God bless you both.
@ColoradoMountainLiving
@ColoradoMountainLiving 5 лет назад
Thank you. Bryan discussed the idea of using a slurry to fill in the dimples (like we did on previous countertop job) but he was afraid the color would be off. So we tried to fill in with epoxy instead. The epoxy is great but it won't be scratch proof.

I like the counter tops, unique. Glade that the fumes from the epoxy were not that bad. So you have decided on a concrete retaining wall. It should look dramatic coming up your drive with the stain.
@ColoradoMountainLiving
@ColoradoMountainLiving 5 лет назад
Yes, low volatility with this brand. Bryan worked his decision around to the concrete and I think I-beams for supports. I'm still unclear on how tall it will be.
@johnclements6614
@johnclements6614 5 лет назад
@@ColoradoMountainLiving The I beam posts will have to be buried quite deep because of the downhill slope and unless you can keep it away the phase two construction traffic. The posts may have to be buried the same depth below ground as the wall height. I assume that Bryan wants to make the wall high enough so that you can get rid of some of the material excavated from the phase two basement behind it. If you are making your own precast boards I would make the concrete in your mixer because higher quality is required than you could get by mixing with your backhoe. Backhoe is good for mixing mass concrete for I beams.
@ColoradoMountainLiving
@ColoradoMountainLiving 5 лет назад
Ah! Great tips. I think the wall should be far enough away from phase 2 construction. It will be on the other side of the septic, but again, I'm not sure how far he's planning to go with it. Looks like we'll be shopping for some LONG beams!
@DirtDDigler
@DirtDDigler 4 года назад
Wow looks great. I have seen a lot of other videos that leave the acid stain on for 4-12 hours, I guess it depends on what kind of concrete your using?
@ColoradoMountainLiving
@ColoradoMountainLiving 4 года назад
Yes-depends on how dark you want your coloring. it's sort of like a "wait and see" how it develops. Also depends on the concrete mix (rock content vs. lime)
@meuass
@meuass 4 года назад
A soft plastic trowel may work alil smoother with the finish.. I'm assuming 😊 I'm not at that stage yet. Amazing work y'all.

The epoxy sort of levels itself out, so the tool used doesn't matter too much. Have fun!

Really looks awesome! One question though, if you epoxy the top, was all of the polishing necessary? Wouldn't that give you a smooth surface anyway?
@ColoradoMountainLiving
@ColoradoMountainLiving 4 года назад
Probably not, but depends on the thickness of the epoxy.

I don't understand the question entirely. You can skip the polishing steps, I suppose, and pour a very thick epoxy layer.
@larsonpr04
@larsonpr04 4 года назад
You need to use heat to release the bubbles while pouring
@codetech5598

Since the top surface of the countertop is epoxy, what is the point of using concrete? Couldn't you have achieved the same results with epoxy over a wooden surface? (If the wood was appropriately painted with various hues of metallic spray paint you can get the look you wanted.)
@ColoradoMountainLiving
@ColoradoMountainLiving 3 года назад
We did do a wooden surface for the vanity- did you see that video?
@codetech5598
@codetech5598 3 года назад
@@ColoradoMountainLiving That's a slice of a tree and is finished to preserve its form. I'm talking about making a piece of plywood look like marble, stone, etc by using specific paints and painting techniques and then putting on the clear epoxy. (Unlike using acid stain on concrete, which is somewhat a gamble because the results are not always predictable, using these paints lets you see exactly what's happening, and a mistake can be corrected by painting over it.) The concrete is heavy-duty, but if you coat it with epoxy, then the work surface is no longer the heavy-duty concrete but is now the epoxy, so why not just put the epoxy over wood instead?
