You forgot Bavarian ending, where the Habsburgs manage to get their dynasty on the Bavarian throne, leading to the unification of the (culturally very similar) realms and ending in an independent, south German nation state.

As an Austrian, from my point of view only the United States of Austria solution could have maybe worked to keep the empire as one country, with everybody as equals and largely autonomous. But ultimately, probably the way it actually happened is the best one. Why keep people in a forced union everybody is unhappy with?
This is complete nonsense and also an insult to serious historians and the Austrians. E.g. there was never an alpine union of Austria in its current form and Switzerland. The Hapsburgs came from a territory that is Switzerland now, but shortly after Rudolf von Hapsburg became king of the Roman-German Empire in the 13th century, the family's interest moved to the lands east of their original home. Today, neither Eastern nor Western Austria has the slightest interest in dividing into two tiny countries, Austria being small enough already. Who has an interest in spreading this kind of malicious propaganda worldwide?
@Labroidas See Wikipedia, House of Habsburg, paragraph "Name". In the English-speaking world the writing Hapsburgs with a P is used too. You are obviously a typical Austrian, following the principle "Nua kane wön" (Don't stir up waves). This means that somebody who criticizes something negative should shut up. Well, this is the reason why we have the worst government in power since Adam and Eve (vgl. normal-Diskussion von Nehammer, Leitkultur-Gerede von Stocker u.v.a.).
