Man, the Lynx was really ahead of it's time. Check out those early Sega Saturn multiplat quality cameras, pixelation, and frame rate.

Haha! Even still it was pretty cool to have a colorized handheld in '89 despite all of its flaws.

To me most but not all of the gameboy games have better pixel art and details but the Lynx color and backlight made it nice for the time. Sound was a mix sometimes depending on each game.

The Lynx was a remarkable system for its time, with some capabilities equivalent to the Super NES, but there were so many hard limits on a portable color screen and its drivers in the late eighties that prevented it from fully exploiting those capabilities. If the Lynx had even had, say, the same screen as the TurboExpress did a few years later, it could have really pushed the envelope.
@RetroComparisons
@RetroComparisons 5 месяцев назад
The GB had some really great pixel art that outdid the Lynx and Game Gear in many cases. The Lynx was ahead of its time but the technology just wasn't quite there yet for it to really shine.

I KNOW YOU'VE WAITED FOR THIS ONE TO POP UP, SO I'M DELIVERING)) GB WINS: Prophecy 1: The Viking Child (Lynx' one looked way better, but...that SPEED though) Super Off Road (oh....I've forgot about this one. No contest at all, obviously. XDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD) Lynx WINS: Asteroids (even though the GB's one had a sic end of the level music) Desert Strike (it was ALMOST a tie, but...colors done their thing, I guess) The Humans (bigger sprites and colors suits this game) Klax (GB smashed here for sure - colors+faster gameplay+better sound) Lemmings (gawd dang it, colors made me do this) Pit-Fighter (for some reason, here colors done their thing unlike the Batman Forever, hehe...also it had fighters' portraits!) Qix (MAH GOSH, those sounds in BOTH versions though, ffs... o0) TIE: Double Dragon (completely different games, completely different feel) Ishido: The Way Of Stones (colorful graphics VS music intact...well, at least till the moment your ears gone bleeding, hehe) Jimmy Connor's Tennis (cute music+bigger sprites+DAT ASS VS colorful graphics and the actual clear voice clips) Joust (the Lynx' one would have won if it hadn't that attrocious sound) Missile Command (better background VS actual colors) Ms. Pac-Man (GB almost got it 'cause of the bigger sprites, but I dunno, Pac-Man just needs to be colorful...) Paperboy (better music VS colors) Rampart (interesting style choices+presentation VS colors+voice clips) Shanghai (better music VS better visuals) P.S. You know...somewhere in the middle I've started to feel bad for Nintendo, and even considered to rethink the Prophecy 1: The Viking Child placing (it was a tie originally), just so it wouldn't be a NO WIN situation, but, as I've said, I've completely forgot how bad the Super Off Road one ended up)) And after all, I thought that the Prophecy 1 was indeed kinda better on GB, even w/o the colors.

Another incredible assessment my friend!! I don't think there's much to disagree with for any of your evaluations as you've pretty much summed these up really well. Super Off Road on the Lynx is one of the worst ports of anything I've ever played and it's a shame because it looks pretty nice. While Prophecy 1 is at least playable the framerate issue is too major of an issue for it to beat out the GB. I think I'd give the win to the GB for Double Dragon because the screen crunch on the Lynx was just too much to really enjoy. One of the coolest things of all of these was the version of Klax that allows the game to be played in a way that's more suited to the game layout which is pretty unusual for something around that time.

@@RetroComparisons wow, I'm glad we have so much in common in terms of the games' quality understanding)) it's a rare thing novadays, sadly... I have a question...do you have Steam? @@oldfan4049 It really is a rarity these days. And if there's a difference of opinion it seems to be even rarer to not see a shouting match online. I don't have Steam unfortunately. To be honest, I haven't played anything for the sheer fun of it in a long, long time. I've been sitting on Mario Wonder since Christmas and the TMNT Cowabunga collection since the Christmas prior but I've been so busy with this channel that it's almost always a decision between regular relaxing gaming and getting footage for the youtube channel.

Nice vid! Ahh the dreaded off road controls haha must have been fun on GB and GG haha 😅 I like how some gamea are entiirely different othera the same except for the color differences. Alao Pit-Fighter for both looks so bad. I'm surprised they even ported that to either 😅it wasnt exactly great on 16 bit from what i recall nevermind GB and GG haha.
@RetroComparisons
@RetroComparisons 5 месяцев назад
Lmao! Ugh Off Road on the Lynx may have been the worst controlling game of everything from the series between every Game Boy, Game Gear and Lynx port. Truly terrible. I can see Pit-Fighter going to the Lynx in theory since it was an Atari arcade game but outside of the arcade original every port is pretty bad and shouldn't have ever been tried on an 8 bit system.
@MKF30
@MKF30 5 месяцев назад
@@RetroComparisons lol yeah that's true. Probably wouldn't play much better on the Lynx but since it was an Atari game which later Midway got the rights but that was later on in Midway Arcade Treasures, that would make sense for sure. I didn't even know they ported this game on those 8 bit consoles and handhelds lol

@@RetroComparisons haha I know right? Yeah I'm surprised too, it's funny some people will go on about Pit-Fighter being the first digital used actors game which was before MK but not the very first. The very first was some weird japanese puppet digitized game lol I just forget the name but I think it's safe to say MK did it the best and properly lol. Pit-Fighter always felt more like a wrestling/beat em up game in a locked arena given the movement was up and down and sideways where as a traditional fighter is just on a 2D and just move right and left you know? lol
@RetroComparisons
@RetroComparisons 5 месяцев назад
@@MKF30 You're so right! I get that it was an early game in the genre but it wasn't the first and MK did it so much better, hence why it created a franchise that's just as strong today as it was over 30 years ago.

I noticed that some games like Paperboy were have a better frame rate on the Gameboy. Some games like Prophecy 1 Viking child are noticibly playing slower on the Lynx. Lynx games also seem to suffer from screen crunch a lot more than on Gameboy. 3 winners on the Lynx were Rampart, Klax and Ms Pacman IMO. But generally the Gameboy faired well for a monochrome 8bit. The lynx should have blown it out the water as it boasted 16bit graphics

I still find it very impressive….and in 2024 I play my steam deck OLED over my switch OLED….both are great. it’s just one ages better….and having both lcd models for the switch and deck as well…I find the switch has people appeal but nothing overall in the long run and as a single dad of 4 with custody….im more in it for me . Plus my steam account from 2009 is still fully there titles and everything.

The framerate on some of these is really bad like Super Off Road and Prophecy 1 to the point where they're borderline unplayable. The Lynx did have some really cool games but on a lot of these mutli gen ports it suffered quite a bit from various issues.
