Ive been looking forward to the second part!!! As an outside newly coming into the universe of conan I’m surprised on how much fascinating information there is. You are by far my favorite source of conan lore on RU-vid.
I feel that, i bought the conan comics online and just happened by the channel which was at the top on my search. I really love this universe so far and adimttly only just got into it cuz of conan exiles and as an IRL "pagan" (Asathru with anamisim tied in) I really like Derketo Goddess of sex and death is the circle of life and was like "nice!" I want to do a full on Derketo RP on exiles XP
Fun fact about Jhil. Jhil's role as the spy for Jhebbal Sag is taken from the real-life symbiotic relationship that exists between wolves and ravens which is often reflected in various mythologies around the world.
@@MrBrimbles 😂 Well in many legends the wolf and raven are one and the same, like two halves of the same coin. One is the hunter, warrior, and guardian and the other is the spy, sage, and mentor while both act as scouts and represent the mystical and mysterious aspect of nature and the wild. Wolf and raven deities are most often kings or queens of their respective pantheons or at the very least extremely high ranked and often depicted as archers. Examples are the Cherokee Kanate, the Egyptian Upuaut, the Norse Odin, the Greek Zeus, Artemis, and Apollo just to name a few.
Jhil is basically the Celtic goddess Morrigan, the triple goddess of War, Death and protection. As a pagan, she has a lot of incredible stories and legends tied to her, if you like the aspects of Jhil would recommend taking a look.
@@reverendmorgano9659 Odin, Zeus, Apollo and Artemis are not wolf and raven deities, where are you getting that from? Association with those animals does not make them those animals
Any of the gods that Lovecraft wrote specifically about are all public domain nyarlethotep, azathoth, yog-sothoth, shub-nigaroth, and yig all are free game.
Oh, can't wait to hear you cover Yag-Kosha! "Tower of the Elephant" is one of my favorite Conan stories. Would love to hear you go more in-depth about the winged humanoids that devolved into the Winged Ape of "Queen of the Black Coast."
Can I just say I fuckin love these episodes? As someone who got into Conan through Conan exiles, it's so interesting hearing about how absolutely *massive* this world is
If I came face to face with Cthulhu, I'd ask him: "those wings...are they for decoration, simply ornamental in nature or do they serve a purpose of some kind (other than flight that is...obviously)?
I just finished ranting on some one else channel about videos being to short. This other RU-vidr thought his videos were too long and was trying to make them shorter and I'm like "nah, make em loner, man." and then I find this hour long gem. :) Keep it up! I like em long. lol
My theory: Hanuman - God of the winged apes or the winges one and their old ruin city - and maybe also of the giants (although they probably also workshippes Seth or Yig)
Re: the Necronomicon, the original title given to it by Abdul Alhazred (sic) is Qitab al-Azif, which I've seen translated as "the book of whispers heard on the night wind." That would mean that it is a transcription of an aural tradition heard by Alhazred. IMO that matches up with your info.
The only criteria for something being high fantasy is that it take place in fictional world that has own sets of rules and physical laws. The world of Conan is for all extensive purposes does this and as such is high fantasy not low fantasy.
Bro you are speaking to my soul , I’ve been a Conan fan since my dad showed me the movie a few years after it’s release. I didn’t get into the lore of conan until much later. Love your work ! Keep the vids coming I am also a recent 40k convert. So your content is hitting on all cylinders for me lol. Much appreciation from another Texan.
I love that the 1982 conan movie with Schwarzenegger, and as much as I love it and without it many would not have got into conan. But at the end of the day it is a poor representation of the character that does not do the character justice. And yet I can’t stop watching it lol
Good news! I’m working on a Conan lore video on the ancient demon empire of Acheron right now! Plus the podcast style series on gods you’ve been listening too will be getting AT LEAST 4 more episodes! These will be: 3. Law Gods 4. Dark Gods 5. Future Gods 6. Cultural Pantheons 7. The Hyperborean Cycle 8. Expanded Cthulhu Mythos in Conan Check the community tab for classic Conan art and regular updates!
Man, you keep calling this “grimdark” when you really should be referring to it as “pulp” there’s much more dignity and class in Pulp than in grimdark… and the literature style is much different
i found a cave on top of a mountain in CE where i got my ass handed to me by harpies called "cave of Jhil" or something like that. from then on i've wondered who Jhil was, now i know. thanks dude.
I have just stumbled across your channel for the first time earlier today and I gotta say that I love your content. Your Conan lore videos are fantastic, and I would argue some of the best on RU-vid. Please keep up the fantastic work, I'm really looking forward to more.
funny how you bring up Kong while mentioning Hanuman. Considering the nature of Skull Island and Kong's psuedo-science fiction/Fantasy themes, I think it would fit right in with the Hyborian Age. Their both linked to that pulpy action/adventure mythos of the early 20th century and would be a match made in heaven. Most giant monsters would, tbh. Canon or otherwise, a Kaiju/Toho crossover with Conan would be awesome!
I have rewatched both of the Gods of Conan Videos, because I enjoy them. But also I am trying to figure out which God if I dropped into the world of Conan would follow. Mitra feels to easy, Crom and Ymir don't really grant much to their followers. I am not down for Set, but outside of Mitra I can honestly see Jhil as an option I would consider..... long and hard...... from a safe distance. But consider. She seems more like a Goddess that would grant me knowledge especially with the whole rolling dice to see fate. If there is a God of magic and knowledge that won't eat my face I'd probably head in that direction. Great video as always.
Great take. I like that Bokrug and his frog worshippers are actually the more on the nose aliens, not just mutated/cursed/deformed humans like most others. A complete contrast to the deep one, who were mostly human, and you have to theorize their brutality to increase their numbers. But for the forg people Lovecraft brings up their city in other stories (Ibb) but he's very on the nose of who they were in the "Doom of Sarnath". Frog people who came from the moon (space), set up a peaceful city made of grey stone, and worshipped Bokrug. But he never makes it mysterious, he tells you exactly what, and who they were. I do think they're sort of the perfect catalyst for dealing with water/ocean adventures, and cultures like Cuthulu, and the deep one's.
Awesome videos, I love the original Howard stories I discovered in highschool and got deeply into Lovecraft without knowing they were related. I'm glad someone is making quality video essays examining a world that the movies don't do justice in my opinion, I really wish we could get a more respectful adaptation of the "greatest hits" with a framing device story. I do think the 'noble savage' is more like "We live in small civilization, not overpowering the wilderness but living within it" post colonial romanticism of "a less complicated life" similar to how Lovecraft longed for the older more eloquent writing style of the 1700/1800's and Howard fantasized about a more savage untamed world filled with mysteries just outside of civilizations, (in many ways) insufficient protection.
Let’s gooooooooooooooooo Howard goated for having Hindu gods in Conan, as someone who is Hindu, the Conan hanumam is like a dark version of the original god, still a god of courage and strength, the winged ape design is awesome 😎🥶🦍🦅🇦🇱😤🙏😎
@@shaestroup2044 A native indo-european form of religion focusing on the gods of Greece as viewed by their reformations into the roman pantheon that also rejects the term neopagan and embraces platonic metaphysics as a form of theology.
Bokruk's "keep the peace" and "generational vengeance" may come into conflict. It may even conflict with "protect worshipers". Someone kill some worshippers and a vendetta start eventually leading to the extinction of a tribe.
Really hoping that with the sorcery update, Hanumans/Jullah shrine gets updated to. Would love to see stronger ape pets then the ones we have in the current version of Exiles and it would be pretty badass if we could learn a ritual that would allow to summon a Child of Gullah from the Siptah expansion.
It's always funny/interesting to see how Hindu and to some extent Eastern gods are treated in western media. Hanuman is one of the most benevolent gods (Sun Wu Kong is based off him), much closer to Mitra in Conan lore, yet he is some sort of evil eldritch God here. Kinda like naming a God Jesus and he is God of lust and wrath. A lot of it has to do with ignorance and xenophobia of the early authors and world builders. An interesting take none the less.
Well Jill, I hope you and Jhil can get along. Can’t have my Jhil fighting other Jills. Jhil on Jhil violence is a serious problem in the Jhil community.
Good eye! I needed the ultimate symbol of Lizard man degeneracy, so I did what all people looking for something horrifyingly awful do. I went to Bethesda.
Don’t worry we’ve already started on that! Our first episode was on the 5 types of dragons you can find in Conan. Next I might do Minotaurs as I’ve just done more research on them.
Hello my good man hope you are feeling okay for now I'm one of the subscribers you replied to who is also battling Cancer as well Colon Rectal it went away for awhile when I was on chemotherapy and Radiation treatments but I recently found out it's growing back so they have an upcoming surgery to try next bless you sir I hope and pray you can beat this very soon I feel for you and understand all the things most people go through now but I also realize some have it way worse than I do with more aggressive types of of it well anyway you are in my thoughts my favorite Conan lore friend! I was wondering if you could go back further on a video or two and teach the viewers a little bit about King Kull maybe a short video or 2 when you feel better and ready no hurry or worry I'm I'll be patient take care I'm very thankful for you and Robert E Howard both much appreciation take care and *"what is best in life"* good question and quote bye for now!😃😄
I am loving these videos, please keep up the great work. If you're looking for a good Cthulu/Dagon/Deep one story idea, You should take a look at the movie Cold Skin.
It would really help if you included a spelled out version of Moustier tools next time you bring that up. It's a cool subject, but when I went to the internet looking for "moisture tools", all my search engines were convinced I wanted to learn about those electric things you put on walls to see if water's leaking.
They really could, the chaos gods already work well in both fantasy and 40k, and the norsca and the warriors of chaos in fantasy are a lot like the people of the Conan universe

Historical precedent :D Awesome pair of videos Cheers mate
Do you by chance have any information about Nergal and how he falls under the pantheon? I made a huge Temple to Nergal under the tower of bats but other than he's a bat and possible outer dark connections I don't know anything else
He seemed to be in a similar situation to varnae in which he was a human of elder night living in acheronian civilization before the great exile of demons who himself became a demon through the mastery of magics and is now seen as on par with or equal in power to Dagon and Erlik depending on the culture. That's my loose knowledge so far, but honestly I should really do a video on all of Acheron next. I'll add it to the list, thanks!
I found you yesterday. This has been so fun and informative for the ttrpg. These gods might compliment my shaman character. Jhil also reminds me of the Morrigan or Morrigu. Irish Goddess of war, death, magic, prophecy and fertility.
I have a question. Since Elric and Conan had a crossover via the multiverse (and it's canon to Michael Moorcock, hell yeah), does it means that Arioch and the chaos Lords/ Law Lords such as Donblas are apart of Conan (and also the Marvel Universe by the way) ? And how would you classify them ?
Human worshipping dagon in shadow over innsmuth (or movie dagon) is not a bad deal from cultist perspective. Sure humans are turn into deep ones. However from an individual perspective thats value neutral. Your family will have gills from now on? So what?
Another idea of a good aligned Dagon cultists could be the one of elevation rather than extermination. With the idea of sharing the long life of deep ones and the wonders of the sea with all of humanity. This could especially fit if you want to use climate change or climate change analogies where the cultists see this as a way to save humanity from a slow and inevitable end.
Hell yes this is awesome thank you for what you do man and for the comment highlight. I'm always anxiously awaiting the next bit of Info for this wonderful universe especially the way you tell it. Cheers to grimdark 🍻
Jhil is my favorite for obvious reasons lol but just a little side note odins ravens are pronounced hue-in and mew-nin I'm very fond for norse mythology especially the raven symbolism which is said to be the constant search for wisdom and understanding. If you haven't heard of it I'd highly recommend researching the Valravn. The game hellblade does a very good job at depicting this and the valravn falls closely in line with who or what jhil is.
I was hoping to see Jukala listed on this part. He is listed as a god of basically dinosaurs in the book, Lord of the Black River by Leonard Carpenter.
Is there any information about the Four Winds spoken of in the original Conan the Barbarian movie? When asked, Subotai said he worshiped the Four Winds.
@@GrimDarkHalfOff Hats off for the fast reply! Currently playing Conan Exiles and concentrating certain thrall races in different parts of my city according to their beliefs and culture so I'm digesting all the information I can get my hands on. Looking forward to the video.
Gods. Celestial haters, from what I've learned here. Be they Devine, Great Old Ones or The 4 Ruinous Powers/Primordial Anihilators/Dieties of Chaos(can i get a Praise The *God-Emperor* from my 40k Loyalists out there), they seem to be envious and salty over Mankind's accomplishments and fervor for life. Ironic, really...as Mankind often covets immortality, omniscience, omnipotence and greater power in general. And someone hasn't ever thought to negotiate an exchange..?🤔
Honestly, I hope that after Age of Sorcery, Funcom brings to Conan Exiles Age of Gods, and bring us new religions including some of these. Also, if there is no such thing as "noble savage" in Conan's lore, then how should I call my Hyborian/Hyrkanian Yoggite ladies? Sure, they engage in such depravity as ritual cannibalism (which is probably considered anti-civilization), but only on those that strike first or provoke fight. K*lling and consuming flesh of innocent that means no harm (whether that would be man, beast or even demon) is considered taboo in their view of Yog-worshipping.
I'd just like to be the one to say: Not *ALL* brutal socialpaths want to free Zoroastrian Arch-Feinds, thus bringing and age of darkness, ending in the end of all things.
Dagon is in Conan Exiles. Not a patron you can follow, but you can help free him by finding a rowboat on the east coast that takes you to the remnants of Atlantis.
In your opinion, are Xotli and Ahriman the same, or not necessarily? Which do you think is the more powerful Demon God of destruction. Xotli or Ahriman?
I must ask, are Mitra and the other Divine gods actual deities? The Lovecraft gods are highly advanced god like ancient aliens so what is the dynamic between the two classes of Gods?
