For the younger generations that have not seen any of these hysterical classic tv shows, it can be a shock of the things that were said in all the episodes. The Jeffersons, All in the Family, Sanford and Son, the characters were black, white, Hispanics, etc and the one liners with the insults were just plain hysterical because we were able to laugh at each other and our differences. Miss those times so much !!!

It's so great to look back at these shows. As you had said clearly, this was a time when we were able to look at ourselves and not take ourselves so seriously. One of my favorite shows of this time was the Jefferson's. Superb! Acting, superb writing. All in the family was also a favorite of mine and my father's.

Fun fact, Carrol O'Connor and Sherman Hemsley were very good friends from their days doing theater. When Sherman was in the mix for the character of George Jefferson, he leaned heavily on Carrol for guidance on how to act like a full blown racists. Neither man were like that in real life; both were highly educated men. They both brought to life two of TV's most iconic characters.

One of the reasons that the show worked so well was that aside from the legendary and experienced writing team the cast were all veteran stage actors and the best of the best. I don’t think I’ll ever see another human chameleon like Carrol O’Connor again. He always played rolled that were nothing like him.

You don't understand, Norman Lear and his shows and actors WERE social justice warriors (sjws). They proved that a diverse community is a goal, not a threat. These kinds of programs were extremely popular in the 70s ans could be again now if snowflake reactionary Republicans weren't so totally invested in divisiveness and hatred. for God's sake, All in the Family, The Jeffersons,.Maude, etc., were liberal programming that broke down racial and sexual barriers. People today are MORE prudish and reactionary than they were 50 yeara ago, as crazy as that sounds.
@cjonesufc
@cjonesufc Год назад
Archie Bunker was intended to be ignorant in order to highlight casual (and sometimes not so casual) racism, sexism, sexuality, as well as many other important social issues. The show, while divisive, was actually a big proponent of civil and personal rights and sparked national discussion about the use of comedy to highlight these issue and whether or not it was appropriate. The show was definitely well written and funny for the time and it’s worth checking out.

Right..Archie was intended to be the "butt of the joke" to show just how ridiculous his bigotry was. He was not intended to be the "hero ". George was the same man from the opposite perspective. But every once in awhile..Archie's hidden humanity would rise to the surface. He was very fond of Lionel Jefferson, even "proud" of him as a young man. Their "banter" back and forth was always fun.. And with Beverly Lasalle (the drag queen Archie saves) in the 2nd episode when he dies from a "gay bashing" you can see how unsettling it is to Archie. His "bigotry" came from a place of ignorance..not from hatred or malice. 😮

I'm so glad you're reacting to the sitcom "All In the Family" . . . it was one of the most funny, well--written, well-acted sitcoms in the history of TV. Just to give you a little background . . . the first night the show premiered on CBS, it started with a disclaimer to viewers that said, "“The program you are about to see is ‘All in the Family.’ It seeks to throw a humorous spotlight on our frailties, prejudices and concerns. By making them a source of laughter, we hope to show - in a mature fashion - just how absurd they are.”

Archie was played by Carroll O'Connor, who was the opposite of Archie in real life. The actress playing Mrs. Willis later married a white actor named Werner Klemperer (Col. Sherman Hemsley played George Jefferson via sitcom The Jeffersons. It was a spinoff from the sitcom All In The Family, which starred Carol O’Connor as Archie Bunker. The Jeffersons and the Bunkers were originally next-door neighbors. However, the Jeffersons moved on up & out of the neighborhood. Due to George’s dry cleaning business doing very very well.

These guys were awesome! Even though they started all this trouble amongst their family members bickering and calling each other names, they were two sides of the same coin. They'd get everyone around them all upset and then begin being civil to each other because they didn't understand what everyone else's problem was. They would never admit that they enjoyed tormenting each other. Neither of them was truly racist, just ignorant and insensitive. I always felt like they liked each other but would never admit it. The poor wives !

Well, at the end they came together as good friends and made a toast to the good old days. They had more in common with each other than with their own people. Like two old army combatants from opposite sides sitting down for a drink years after war ended reminiscing with respect for one another. Though in this case, it's just a quick pause; the war is far from over.

That was a different time. The shows were not just trying to be comedies, they were trying to start conversations about race, gender, sex, etc. I think it's a good thing that many of the words and situations they had would not be allowed today (that means that these programs were at least somewhat successful). We've made some progress. If we were still making these shows today, it would be a sad commentary on how far we've come.
@timward3116

Sherman Hemsley was actually the black father, George Jefferson, who later starred in a spin-off show called The Jefferson, which was also EXTREMELY popular among people of all races. Back in those days, there was much racial tension and some terrible discrimination but there was also much humor about that tension and the discrimination could be mocked humorously. Back then, no group presumed to tell another group what it could or could not think or say --and there wasn't an effort to root out racism where it didn't exist. Nobody pretended to be offended, either, by jokes. Jokes don't hurt anyone, but hatred inspires hatred in everyone. We were able to laugh at others and at ourselves. All in the Family, though the TV network was afraid of airing it, was VERY popular because we could all see our common humanity in all of the characters... and we could laugh together at ourselves and each other. I think that's why we all loved The Jeffersons as well. So sad humor that was never racist is now assumed to be racist, though - and we are all being trained to be afraid of talking with one another for fear of severe punishment if we "say the wrong thing."

Archie is correct here...he hadn't used the N word for 3 years when this episode from the 4th season aired. Archie was actually becoming more mellow as the years went on. He was much coarser during the 1st season, and I think in a much later episode of AITF or Archie Bunker's Place he actually DEFENDS his black housekeeper when someone calls her a N in the supermarket. And when Sammy Davis Jr. makes a return appearance on ABP, ARCHIE KISSES SAMMY this time!

Brutal Truth in comedy and music is the remedy. These two characters were opening eyes and bringing more folks together in laughter than any politician ever did with the truth. ~ If you watched them over the years, there was a brilliant evolution in their affection for each other and neither of them had to compromise their individual characters. ~ Today this would never make it on prime time TV and we're worse off for it. ~ It's seems we've taken steps backwards in relationships because everything is either sugar coated, or hidden and dishonest.

I consider All in the family, the greatest show in television history.

Norman Lear was not afraid to go there on these shows....The Jeffersons, All In The Family, Good Times, Maude, etc. If you do another Family reaction, check out. the Sammy Davis Jr episode

The funny part is when The Jeffersons came on the air, all the Willis actors were played by different people.

If you get around to watching Sanford an Son, there is a scene in the traffic court where Fred Sanford goes off and blurts out the word. You hafta dip into that show as well.

George and Archie were 'peas in a pod' when it came to bigotry! Can you imagine the uproar if this were to air today? AND, back in those days was the ending of segregation, civil rights protests, and the occasional riot in the street. STILL, we all got it that the joke was on bigotry! It was laid bare for all of its' nastiness to see, and the show worked! I'm 73 now but remember those days very vividly.

The great thing about that era 70´s and 80´s everyone made fun of serious issues and we learnt that we were all the same. It was just laugh at stupidity and have fun. Archie was great and George Jefferson was awesome. Sad that today is so WOKE.

Carroll O'Connor did a great job in this comedy tv show, i believe he didn't act for some time because he was pigeon holed for this Archie Bunker character, but did a much better job in the tv drama ... In The Heat Of The Night... his character there was much the opposite of Archie Bunker. Archie was quick to open his mouth and show his ignorance, where Chief Gillespie was slow to speak and more cerebral, Archie was a bigotted racist, and Chief Gillespie was inclusive. Carroll O'Connor really got to show his acting prowess in both shows, an amazing actor

All in the Family and the Jeffersons were considered satires instead of sit-coms. The scripts were written to bring awareness to various issues with humor.

It is funny just watching you laugh. My 20 year old son laughs like this when he started watching some of these old shows.

In response to what George using the "N" word to Louise, Archie told Edith, "In a few seconds, she is going to call him "Honky". But anyway dude now you are seeing and hearing for yourself the comparison between yesteryear's comedy and today's whatever that is everything but funny. Good Evening Sir. Have a Blessed Evening. Adios.
