True. Even though I love Archie, they killed off Edith in the spinoff. They also had Mike & Gloria split up. There was the mid 90s show 704 Hauser. Maybe it could have lasted a full season unlike 704, due to Archie getting mad at Clinton. All In The Family is just WAY too much of a 70s show, I love how Archie would get so mad at Jimmy Carter.
He was great actor. I know back those days while be actor in All In The Family he had to say bad things. But off set he was great caring loving person. I have never for got him. God Bless You. Mr. O'Connor.
Mr. Lear, what I wouldn't have given for an "All in the Family-Sanford and Son" crossover! Archie and Fred would've cut one another to ribbons, and no telling how many people would've laughed themselves to death before the episode ended.
Different networks, but maybe. Might have been too weird. That said, when Carol O'Connor or Red Foxx opened their mouths, we were always guaranteed a laugh.
@@tylermorrison7051 Yeah, the network thing would've been awkward. Wonder if CBS and NBC could've put aside their differences for that? Or, could they have compromised by putting it on ABC? That probably would've been going too far, but still, what I wouldn't have given to see it!
I’d love to see this whole episode… it’s hard to find. The greatest television show of all time!!! All in the family! Carroll O’Connor my childhood hero! Miss him!
You absolutely said it. Would it have worked with Mickey Rooney in the part? (Mr. Rooney was the first choice) I am not too sure. The part of Archibald Bunker was made for Carroll O'Connor.
How many people can honestly say that they saw the first episode?I had it on in the background while I was reading the cover of the Neil Diamond's album I had just bought at Two Guys. Then, words I had never heard spoken on TV came out of the set.
Well, Edith should NEVER have been written out as having died. In her last season, she (her character) became ill; they should've let the series end there and left it up to the viewer what her fate was, be it death, a complete recovery, or something in between. I watched some (if not most) episodes of "Archie Bunker's Place", but it was a sorry excuse of a replacement for AITF.
@@TheBrooklynbodine Norman Lear wanted to keep Edith alive offscreen, Carroll O’Connor convinced him to kill her off, to give his new show more storylines. Archie Bunker’s place actually did very well in the ratings, it lasted 4 seasons.
@@TheEwing69 I watched "Archie Bunker's Place" myself, and I must say, I liked it well enough, but it just wan't the same without Edith. Ironically, Jean Stapleton, who played Edith, survived Carroll O'Connor in real life. Archie mentioned in the episode where he came to grips with Edith's death "it wasn't supposed to be this way. I was supposed to go first."
I like Norman Lear (RIP) but this was a bad call, Archie deserved a proper sendoff. We basically got an ending for everyone but him. Mike was a cheating deadbeat joining a commune, Gloria became a Veterinarian, Edith died... And we didn't see how Archie turned out. He deserves a last season or a continuation movie (that either showed what he was doing years later or retconned Edith's Death and they both living it up someplace nice). It would have been nice to see Archie's story have a conclusion
They could have retconned it for a revival season or movie. They could have retconned the entirety of Archie Bunker's Place and had it as a continuation from AITF Season 9. I personally only count season 1 of Archie Bunker's Place as canon and the rest as a hypothetical because it destroys what AITF was all about.
Carroll O'Connor was a brilliant actor. I think if they did like sn hour episode just as...a years later thing it wouldn't work. I mean it could have been funny but with out Edith i don't know
Yeah and then Lear and Kimmel come up with the stupid idea of doing the shows with new characters. So the irony of not letting Carroll O'Connor do it because it should stay nicely wrapped away and should stay there, sounds kinda dumb now, doesn't it Norman....
It would have been nice to have Carroll O'Connor play Archie again, but I have to agree with Norman Lear about letting "All in the Family" and Archie Bunker be!I agree with him that the classic last episode of Season 8, where The Stivics leave for California, should have been the end of the series!I like and admire Carroll O'Connor as an actor and human being, but writing off Edith the way he did on "Archie Bunker's Place" was a mistake! The show suffered without her!Long live "All in the Family"!
@@princesaguerrera5119 That's true, I am aware that she wanted to do other things "Archie Bunker's Place" was still watchable, but wasn't the same without Edith.I agree when Norman Lear told Carrol O'Connor that he should somehow keep Edith part of the show or cancel the show!He should have listened to Norman Lear!
