Over the past week, all of the more than 983 intact cars and some fire-damaged cars on board the Fremantle Highway freighter have been successfully removed. A spokesperson for the salvage company Boskalis, which was involved in removing the ship's cargo, said: "We have now handed the ship back to its owner." About 2,800 are still on the ship, destroyed by fire.
The ship, which was hit by a fire on the night of Tuesday 25 to Wednesday 26 July while on the high seas north of Ameland, is currently lying empty in the Eemshaven. It is expected to remain there for several weeks. It remains unclear for the time being what the owner's plans are regarding the ship and when exactly it will be removed. A spokesperson for Groningen Seaports previously stated that the ship must have left no later than October 14.
During the disembarkation process, an incident occurred on August 10 in which an electric car caught fire. Nevertheless, the remainder of the clearing operation proceeded without further incident.
The cause of the original fire, which caused one fatality and several injuries, still remains unknown. The ship had a crew of 23 people, 22 of whom were Indian nationals. There were a total of 3,784 cars on board, including almost five hundred electric vehicles.
