Excellent playing . Kevin Loughlin always had an interest in having a bit of decent harmony round about him . Im afraid some of the sparce noise( and that's all that it is ) that we are subjected to nowadays leaves me totally bemused.
Irish Accordionist Unusual accordion/melodeon he's playing there; a full Stradella bass-button setup on a 3-row. I was always under the impression that 3-row melodeons aren't usually tuned properly for Irish music. Is it a specially-tuned box he's got there? Also I have a *QUESTION for a MUSICIAN:* Are there certain 3-row tunings which allow for playing Irish tunes (like A-D-G)? My Hohner Panther, a 3-row tuned G-C-F, does not have the proper tuning to play traditional 2-row style Irish jigs & reels (most commonly tuned B-C), I can only play songs that have all their notes on one row. Is it best to simply get a B-C melodeon or are there other options concerning diatonic accordions? Thanks & Happy St. Patrick's Day!
Brandon Veracka The accordion being played is tuned B/C/C# thus giving you a full range of keys. It's known as a British Chromatic as opposed to a five row Continental Chromatic. You use B and C fingering. Could I recommend you Google Brandon McPhee and watch a young maestro playing a three row with the same tuning..........
Kevin McDermott Thank you *so much* for that bit of advice & info! I live in an area where almost nobody plays accordion (I live just outside of Boston), and if they do, they play piano accordion. So naturally I've been teaching myself, starting with a Hohner Panther. After about 5 years at it now, I'm definitely starting to pick it up (I play other instruments as well; mainly different disciplines of guitar but other instruments too). In my case, any solid information about diatonic accordions/melodeons is always helpful, so thanks again, and Regards from Boston!
Brandon Veracka Hope you won't mind, but I saw your post and decided to comment. There are some brilliant Irish button accordion players living in the Boston area (some of the best in the world in fact) as well as not too far away in NY. Send me a message if you like and I will do my best to put you in touch with some of the box players in your area if you are not finding them. Trad music needs community and there are few communities as strong as the Boston Irish trad scene!:) You also have the Button Box in MA, one of the best button accordion shops in the western hemisphere! Brandon Veracka Oh, and for playing Irish music, you are going to want a semi-tone box, either B/C or C#/D. These give you a full chromatic range. Not all of the keys are exactly the easiest fingering to master (especially on the B/C) but well worth the versatility. There is almost nothing you cannot play on a 23 button two row B/C, within reason.
Zac Leger Yes it does seem that the B/C tuning is super-versatile, and that's partly the reason why I want to get an accordion with that tuning instead of the three-row G-C-F tuning I'm working with now; it's nice but so very limited. I also have a nice 120 bass piano accordion but I just hate the feel of those big chromatics. Time to sell the 120 and buy a decent B/C! What's a good B/C accordion for a man on a budget. Maybe a used Hohner Double-Ray?
