Just one Oscar nomination...for sound editing. Redford was ignored for Best Actor. Proof, if needed, that the Academy has absolutely no idea about films.
it was a remarkable performance, arguably the finest in a superb career...it's pitched brilliantly, subtle and reticent on the outside but still very moving and full of emotion...he drives the film despite uttering hardly a word...and then in the background you have what the actor (in his mid-70s) had to endure during the exhausting and gruelling shoot, spending weeks in water...sorry, it was crazy he was overlooked
Great acting, reminded me of his Jeremiah Johnson, that silent scene in the cabin when he lost everything that matters in his life. Acting without a word, that sadness... he should have got an oscar just for that scene...
I have just watched this film. I can't believe it took him so long to shout "FUCK!!!'... I would've shouted that right at the start when I first saw the hole in the boat!
lol script, the only script he needs is his facial expressions - its up to the audience to know what he's thinking and this interestingly works both ways and that we'll be thinking about what we would be feeling in the dire situation that he is in as well
Amazing movie! The most realistic survival movie ever! Loved it! Finally no crazy effects, bombs, jumping over roofs, overreacting, "heroes" saving the world bullshit! One man carries the whole movie with his amazing acting, nothing is overplayed, perfect.
I didn't like it. I felt it was both boring, and depressing. As for bombs, heros, etc., well, to point out the obvious, to each his own. If that's not your thing, cool, but if it is someone's thing, cool. Don't put people down just because their tastes are different than yours. I'd rather watch a good Tom Crusie action film over this one any day. This is just too depressing. Life is hard enough, without watching depressing movies, in m opinion. Tom Hanks carried all of Cast Away, long before this movie, and he did it better. I feel that this movie is a bit of a copy cat. Plus it's not an original idea. I wouldn't recommend to anyone to watch this movie. The old 'lost at sea' plot has been done so many times already, and better than this.
This is one of those movies it takes a certain level of maturity to like. At least in my opinion! I loved it but younger people seem to think it’s boring.
Seems a lot of hate for the 'unrealism' in the film, but then there would be no film right. Soundtrack was breathtaking and captured the feeling of being alone, helpless in the middle of the ocean. great film
I loved it. Robert Redford looks as great as ever and it really reminded me to never go out on the high seas again. Not after what happened last time! Why do people put themselves through it? Just hope to meet him on 'Dinner Date' sometime.
Cheryl Rubin i'm sorry but if you depend on anything at all in this movie to teach you about survival at sea, you better notify your next of kin that all is lost. Believe me all of us who have spent our life on the ocean watch this and realize that it is less realistic than some of the Donald Duck cartoons I remember as a child. Liking Robert Redford is one thing but believing anything in this movie is being even plausible is another
Regardless of how much truth there may be in the negative comments re: practical things involving sailing, there is quite a bit of exciting action. The amazing part of this film for me is Redford's acting with no supporting cast and almost no dialogue. To carry an entire film using only body movements and facial expressions is a great achievement. He should have won an Oscar for Best Actor. Of course, people who only want car chases, gun play, explosions, fighting, and so on are sure to be bored.
LOVE these type of movies! Where one guy is stranded/stuck somewhere and goes full survival XD watched few ones in snow, jungle, castaway-type etc. If anyone got any suggestions please reply maybe I missed some!!
Not exactly a castaway type situation, but there's the show "The Terror" by AMC, which focuses on the Franklin Expedition on the Northwest Passage. There's also "Into the wild", which focuses on Christopher McCandless, someone who decides to put everything on the side to explore the wild, and "The way back". This one's more debated, but allegedly it focuses on Russian POW Janusz Wieszczek, and a group of other survivors who escape the Gulag and have to walk all the way across Asia to escape the Soviet Union.
This is actually based on a true story it would not allow me to add the link. The man drifted at sea in that raft for 76 days. Robert Redford is amazing.
This is one motion picture which I certainly hope you make time for on your viewing schedule. Robert Redford offers us his fans a magnificent performance.
MY RATING - 7 out of 10 - There are very few screen legends left plying their trade in Hollywood now but Robert Redford has to be up there with the all time greats and he's still got what it takes. All is Lost is a gripping film , and despite hardly any dialogue , it keeps you engrossed at all times. You feel like you are involved in proceeding even though the only character on screen through out , remains , for the most part , very calm. Beautifully shot and with some nice anti corporate messages , i can recommend All is Lost.
How the HECK did this movie not get better promotion? I only heard about it for the first time literally 5 minutes ago! And searched it immediately. Maybe I had my head under a rock back then, but I doubt it......... You gotta spend money to make money, that's the rule.
After Robert Redford saw Cast Away, he was heard mumbling critical remarks to himself, "too many actors and too much dialogue...I'll show 'em how it's done!!"
@dayum son Be careful what you mean by fun. Castaway was a good movie, sure, but All Is Lost has a real human element to it, largely because of the lack of dialogue tbh. Makes the audience have to read his face, and the camera shots have to be more creative. I like this movie as much if not better than castaway honestly
Amazing movie. But almost nowhere avail ...not on NETFLIX, du, Etis. I wish there would be a platform that has all movies, pay or not. In 2020 one still has to have several providers to find a certain movie. Or is there one that got all?
Bill Lois this movie couldn't teach you how to survive in a bathtub, sorry Bill but it couldn't be further from the truth. It's nice that you enjoyed it though
Ok so this is IMPORTANT... my sis and i are fighting whether or not those scenes in the storm were all CGI or was he filmed and the storm backround was added. Somebody Help Me Pleasee.

Much derided by the cruising community. I don't sail, but I know enough about it from being around cruisers and reading to spot every single thing wrong with this film. And there are many.
1. He do not take life buoyant from his own yancht when he leave his yacht 2. He don't care water bags and not tight with rope on the life raft 3. He do not drink nor collect rain water 4. If he want fire somethings for signal he should make in water not in life raft 5 he should need to stay in water sometime for cooling body 6 he throw sharp knife on the life raft floor 7 he always calculate where his raft reach and noted. Life raft don't have navagiation so no need to calculate. If calculate he must duty to watch cargo ships in near cargo ship route
Hah! Hah! That is ridiculously funny, but yeah, its hard not to feel compassion for someone so utterly screwed. The only way he could have been more screwed is if he was raped by Somali pirates before the boat was damaged.
Had seen this awhile back but not the beginning ..I thought ...so I picked the dvd up used and watched it again..well I did see all of it...turns out the movie doesn't really have a good beginning as you would think....it need a little footage planning the trip and saying farewell to family...so really it sucks!
the annoying thing about trailers...I don't give a crap about what other movies the director directed or the producer produced. I also don't give a darn about what newspaper reviews had to say about the movie. For all I know, they're paid to give their reviews. Just get to the movie and show me why I should watch it.
