LEGO released 3 Mercedes-Benz Technic sets since 2011, the 8110 Mercedes-Benz Unimog U400, the 42043 Mercedes Benz Arocs 3245, and the 42129 4x4 Mercedes-Benz Zetros Trial Truck. I demonstrate all their features in this video and try to compare them to see which one is the ultimate LEGO Technic Mercedes-Benz set!

In my eyes, the Unimog is a perfect fit for Technic, and it was executed perfectly: It's not a vehicle, it's a tool. (In fact, that's what its name means: Universal-Motor-Gerät.) You can attach all kinds of stuff to it, to get your job done. In the Lego version, this is true as well, with the standardized connections in the front and back that provide mechanical and pneumatic power. You are encouraged to create your own attachments, and imo, this is what all Technic models should strive for. The Actros is more beautiful, more mechanically complex, and just better in almost every way, but it isn't modular like the Unimog. The Zetros, like so many "Technic" models nowadays, belongs in the Racers line. In other words, I think Technic has peaked with the Unimog. There's never been anything remotely like it since.

Arocs is definitely number one for me, followed by the unimog with the zetros in third.

Same order for me except Zetros comes 10th, even when comparing just 3 sets. :D It's quite junk. Arocs had so many novelties -> simulated leaf springs on the back etc. Unimog looked solid too.

As (kids) play set: Unimog As 'build set': Arocs As RC-set: Zetros - obviously As display-set/Vehicle-fleet-set: Arocs/Zetros. The Arocs is very good and all, but sitting there and realy loading the dump bed (almost) completely full with the pneumatic shovel is a pain in...... therefor the Unimog = best playset in my opinion Best set for me: None of those :D
@deathified

Nope, you can motorize arocs and that competes with the RC in zetros.

The Arocs is arguably the best Technic set ever made. There is so much clever design and well thought out space management throughout the build, even just looking through the instructions is interesting. The pneumatics also work really well and make crane operation smooth (unlike most other pneumatic sets). The set, at the time, was also really good value for its price, and looks great compared to similar real trucks. It really wasn't that hard to build imo, you just need to be careful with the complex gearbox. The amount of functionality in this set for the price just puts 95% of other technic sets to shame.

Arocs, then long, long nothing and then the other 2. Great building experience, interesting and sophisticated suspenision, a lot of functions, awesome looks. It has a B model and it has a ton of useful parts - pneumatics (pump, 4 valves, 4 cyliders) suspension parts, wheels, panels. With only one set you can build a lot of other trucks, cars and mechanical stuff. ... and it has an electric motor. One of the best Technic sets of all times.

@Tom55data
@Tom55data 3 года назад
Great video as always The Unimog is very easy to motorise, with a space in frame for a large motor under the tipper, and then gear down the portal axles. Fitting a servo motor, there is a space just behind the cab in the main frame, but you have to move the engine 1 stud forwards to fit the server in line with the fake engine; not too difficult once you know the changes and it requires little changes to the build. Then you have a RC Unimog. The Arocs benefits with changes to the springs to improve the suspension. For me, I prefer the Arocs as the as the design/build of the chassis is better as I find the Unimog is made of lots of small pieces and not very strong - still a great model of course and a true Technics build. Like you the, the Zetros is last, but a fun rock crawler.

I have the arocs and zetros and I’d say I prefer the arocs is better,even than unimog,I got it as a present in 2018 ,it was my first ever big technic set.It was brand new back then,sealed box I really enjoy the building experience of the arocs ,the tubing is the hardest part but I built it perfectly and the pneumatic system is still running smoothly and fast. Maybe u r just unlucky that the owner didn’t keep it in good conditions 🥲 Btw I got the arocs for 180 usd and I’d say I’m extremely lucky 😃 And r u gonna motorize the unimog?
@deathified
@deathified 2 года назад
Arocs is easily able to be motorized underneath the pneumatics, so it is 100% better than the Zetros, which sucks at obstacles. It also has a lot of playability with it’s motor so your rating only makes sense if you literally don’t test the set’s playability.

I only own the Unimog, got it in 2011 first big set I built (and is still my second largest, my largest is the Lamborghini I got recently). Great set with unique functions and look. Also to my shock I discovered that after over a decade (and after cleaning it with water) the set still somehow works. The suspension is weaker and the front doesn't work but the back powered by the air staff still works (gotta check if its the batteries in my other sets or that, that one my oldest somehow still functional)

Your Arrocs looks to be suffering from the blue pneumatic pump problem. It's difficult to spot visually, as it only tends to expand and leak when in operation and the internal pressure exposes the crack. Lego recognised this and will replace the old rounded version with the square, re-enforced version if you contact them, or alternatively, super glue works.

@nicolassilvagni7909
@nicolassilvagni7909 3 года назад
@@RacingBrick It is true but i do not want to imagine the amount of gearbox and motors to do so. For example, the tow trucks have 3 valves, and you would need at least a gearbox and two motors ( the valve commuter, and the gearbox commuter ). It is a lot of real estate, especially if you want the truck to also be RC movaeable.

I'm guessing that type of switch would use so little battery you could in theory power it with a button battery or other small battery and have the whole thing wireless. Doesn't seem likely that Lego would make something like that though but who knows. Maybe a 3rd party will make something like that.

I remember being very disappointed with the Unimog. It wouldn't stand up straight, the steering as you mentioned is very heavy and the turning circle is bigger than most kids rooms. I never bought the Arocs at the time but might give it a go when I come across one, or try and build it from parts I have. I'm totally done with Powered Up so that Zetros is definitely not on my shopping list. There are two more Mercedes sets in Technic but they weren't marketed/ branded as such. 8458 Silver Champion was a McLaren Mercedes and the Unimog had an earlier incarnation in 8848. I had that set as a child and loved it.

The unimog steers reallly badly not because of the big tires, but because of the terrible suspension geometry. Due to the portal axle hubs, the axis the wheel steers around is really far from the wheel, creating a massive lever effect. It also has negative caster, which doesn't help with the steering when moving. Here's a video on the front axle of the unimog: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-QT0YCePNB8o.html
