*feel free to meme comment, but yes, there are 2 forced falls in Ghost of the Babe so it's technically 2 falls, but to those unaware it would be confusing and not get the point of the run across to title the video that way
The theoretical summit of all base Jump King challenges. final run time = 29:53.653
Months ago I put in maybe 20-30 hours practicing for this challenge and optimizing strategies, but I never improved that significantly, and it always felt like I could mess up anywhere. This legitimately came out of nowhere, I did not expect to get this quickly at ALL. It could have taken me dozens and dozens of hours easily, jump consistency can easily rise and fall day to day on certain jumps, but I've just been completely On It ever since getting the new PC. It seems I've barely lost any muscle memory for it as well.
The game just feels especially good to play now, it's like I have aimbot with my jumping lmao. This is very similar to the skill buff that pushed me over the edge to get high consistency at GotB b+r 0 falls originally because I figured out how to significantly improve the performance of my game (windows wasn't recognizing it as a high performance process or something like that, needed to manually add it using nvidia control panel.)
Several years ago I did each map individually with 0 falls b+r, never did I think I would get this. I don't know how or when I got so good. or again if I'm just the luckiest bastard there ever was. When I was streaming myself attempting to just Beat GotB b+r for the first time way back in the day, I seriously thought it was unrealistic to try and go for no falls even on that alone.
This really just goes to show that you don't know how good you can get at something until you try. Nobody does.
For the uninitiated, the "Boots + Ring" is in reference to the 2 challenge items jump king has that you unlock in new babe+, those being the Giant Boots and Snake Ring. The Giant Boots prevent you from walking/repositioning, forcing you to shuffle back and forth only with stationary jumps if you want a precise position. The Snake Ring makes all surfaces have ice physics, so you slide on them.
With both items equipped, it's a completely new game almost, you can't reposition and you always slide when you land; the only thing that makes this not impossible is the fact that you can do a quick jump in the opposite direction you're moving as you land, cancelling your previous jump momentum perfectly with good execution.
For newer players, it is extremely punishing and tedious to learn this new playstyle. I actually gave up trying to learn it several times on map 1 back in the day before I eventually pushed through; I soon found it to be a shockingly engaging and rewarding challenge to beat the main maps with. Then I became practically addicted to the playstyle and it became like my specialty...
I will admit though, I do have a decent advantage compared to the average player when it comes to this playstyle. You see, in Ghost of the Babe, there are several jumps where you need to land on the tiniest possible platform, but it's joined to a wall, meaning: you need to jump, bonk the wall barely just before you land, and perfectly stop your momentum as you land by doing an incredibly well-timed super small jump/bonk into the wall. I call this a "tiny ledge jump" or "tiny ledge stall", and on most input devices it is astronomically more difficult to perform than it is for me. The reason is because many if not most input devices (keyboard and especially controller) are incapable of producing a natural 1-frame press at 60fps; doing a 1-frame jump as you land and attempt a tiny ledge stall gives you a very good chance at a successful landing, and you barely need to worry about the jump Timing at all. If you input device is only capable of a 2-frame minimum, then you need to have basically a frame perfect jump setting up the landing on the tiny ledge, and possibly a frame perfect 2-frame jump timing in order to successfully land.
I'm fortunate enough to have a keyboard that is very accurate with it's input registration, and is capable of natural 1-frames. Don't get me wrong though, it's still not Easy to perform natural 1-frames on command, especially with good timing. That's because when going for a 1-frame jump, it's very possible (due to the tick rate of input recording in-game) that your press either doesn't register because the whole press occurred between frame loads, or that it instead becomes a 2-frame input because you barely caught the beginning or end of an adjacent frame's load. If that makes any sense at all.
All that being said, this challenge is almost certainly much harder than it looks. I encourage anyone with the game (who have the items) to just try and play a little bit with both equipped. It takes a lot of time to find your balance and become coordinated despite their inconvenience.
I'm interested to see if this challenge is ever replicated.
