Good morning Matti from the Hudson river valley of New York State, during the 15 plus years that I have been involved in digital photography I have collected a wide variety of cameras and glass,.i have never sold any of my cameras during this time and i use them for different purposes, during the time that I photographed events I had a bag set up with camera and lens just for this purpose, i also have bags set up with the different cameras from Panasonic, Olympus, Fujifilm and Pentax. I started digital photography with different Pentax DSLR's my first being a K100D super followed by K10d, Kr, K5 MKII, K3, K3 MKII and MKIII and a k1 MKII. Panasonic have S5, S5 MKII , FUJIFILM XT3, XT5 and XH2. Micro 4/3 Olympus OMD EM5 MKIII, OMD OM1 MKII AND MKIII. PANASONIC G9 AND G95 with prime and zoom lenses from Pentax, Panasonic, Olympus, Sigma and Viltrox. I will be passing on a Panasonic GH4 with a 12-35 f 2.8 and a Olympus 45 mm f 1.8 to a family member that is starting her career at a Airforce base here in the United states, i will slso donate some of my older DSLR'S to a local school.

Change can be a very positive thing. I feel it is many times a catalyst for getting out of our ‘ruts’ which can stifle creativity - we fall into the”That is the way I’ve always done it” mentality, which is not a good thing. I’m looking forward to your posts from Malaysia. Safe travels!

Thanks Matti for your usual honesty, modesty and clearness. I hope people who cannot shoot one picture if it is under 60 MP will watch this video. Bon courage with moving house. Bonne chance with your travel. From Helsinki, you cannot go very far North, so I assume it will be South. Very wise for a Finn in this season. I was a tiny bit surprised that you only showed digital cameras. Is film a thing of the past for you?

I always enjoy talking gear with photographers, thanks for sharing your story. At the time I jumped on the digital camera train was when CMOS sensors came to the forefront, depending on the lens was like playing with different film types. Lots and lots of cameras, but never preferring single lens cameras - until.. the Ricoh GRiii X. I agree, for EDC, it’s the thing and always with me.

40mm or equivalent is also my favourite angle of view. That's why I like the Lumix 20mm MFT so much, and why I bought a 28mm lens for my Pentax APSC DSLRs. I also own the Pentax 40mm pancake lens for my old Pentax MX film camera that I bought when I was 16 years old in 1980... I'd love to get the Ricoh GR3x as well, but for now I find it a little expensive...

Again thanks for sharing the tools in the photographer’s tool belt! You explained a little bit but I’m imagining there is something about each of the various cameras and lenses that you love that made you want to keep them. I’m interested in knowing about the compact Olympus XZ-1. This camera was released in 2011, so in 2023 there are 12 years of tech advancements. I know you had a ZV1 but got rid of it from your previous youtubes. Why go with the Olympus XZ-1 over the Somy ZV-1? The ZV-1 is every bit as small, great autofocus, shoots 4K video, has really good burst shooting(24fps), and a large 1in. sensor which should beat the XZ-1 in low light performance. Further, you can transfer photos to your phone with Sony’s imaging edge app, and stabilize shakey hand held video footage in post using Sony’s Catalyst browse software. You describe a certain indescribable magic from the XZ-1’s, nostalgic 1/1.63 in., CCD sensor but does this enchantment make one look past all this? Describe this magical enchantment?
@mattisulanto
@mattisulanto 11 месяцев назад
Like I said in the video, that camera has been in the family since new. I did not prefer this over the ZV-1. I also said in the video that some think a CCD sensor is something special. I did not say I think it's special.

An interesting collection of gear. I must admit, I have wondered often about the Ricoh, especially because it is so pocketable. But then I heard that it has a weakness in build quality. Maybe things improved... I am also tempted by the Sony 6700 as it would be great to make it the main camera alongside the 6400 I already have. My ideal setup is my 6400 with the Sigma 18-50 f2.8 zoom. Most of the time there is no need for anything else. It is so sharp that people often think I am using primes. In addition to that, you can focus much closer than expected and so have the additional bonus of macro photography without needing to go into a macro mode like I used to have to do with Tamron that I have sold on.
@mattisulanto
@mattisulanto 11 месяцев назад
Thanks for sharing. I've had no build quality issues with my GR3x, but I do not represent everyone. The A6700 is a really good camera in my opinion and actually I'm considering the Sigma 18-50mm as well. I have tested it when it was new and I liked it a lot.

Thanks for sharing! Noticing you seem to favor smaller sizes, (XZ1, the Micro 4/3 cameras: Panasonic GF6, GX880, & Lumix GX9, & the APSCs: Ricoh GR IIIx, Sony A6700), and apart from your Viltrox lenses and Sigma 70mm macro those are all teeny tiny little lenses! Your youtubes seem to be more centered on street and nature walks. The selections seem easier to carry on extended walks.

What and why you use for your photography is interesting. I do mostly wildlife and landscape, so I have different needs, but I try other genres of photography as well. So your mentions of "It works well for me" are quite appropriate. Just as a roofer has a different toolset than the framer and the electrician, they all are building houses and all of them are important. I don't think I could become a good street photographer because I always want to ask permission before I take anyone's picture.
@mattisulanto
@mattisulanto 11 месяцев назад
Thanks for your insights. If I go to someone's face I'll ask permission, but if it's a street scene it's impossible to ask anything and also not necessary. Street shooting or documentary as well requires some patience and practice as does wildlife too.

I used to have the Lumix 14-42 PZ, I had a lens cap that worked automatically. It was great for travel. When I got the 12-32, I sold the PZ. Sometimes I wish I had kept it. I am happy to see you hang on to your GX9, even if it is broken. Mine is working as new. It is an exceptional camera. Did you try the 14-140? I haven't used the 12-60 but from the images it looks about the same size. With the 14-140 nothing is out of range. Mind you, recently I went on a trip and took your advice, I used mostly one lens, the Oly 17 f1.8. There is a feeling of freedom that comes from not using a zoom.

Nice selection. Interesting to me is that the prettiest camera is also one of the oldest- the Olympus. I had the XZ-2 and while it is gorgeous and makes excellent photos and is amazingly tough, it was also the worst digital camera to use I've ever owned (that menu, man... :) I didn't buy it, a customer at my shop was threw it away cos they dropped it and dented the metal case, tho a little gentle persuasion with a small screwdriver fixed it and I used it on and off for over five years. Anyway, I sold it. I may buy another is the price is right tho ;)

Fun video Matti! It was great to see the Lumix GF-6 since I bought a GF-3 about 6 months ago because it came with the 14-42 power zoom --been wanting that lens for awhile. It is a fun run-around camera and I kind of like that old school "Klunk" noise it makes and the solid feel. Always enjoy your videos..Just curious if the newer Panasonic camera developments will bring you back to being a Micro 4/3 specialist again.. Good Luck in all--

Thanks for sharing. I thought you had a G9 (as well as an S1 or an S5--maybe those were only for reviews). In fact, as I recall, your reviews of the G9 helped me decide to get one and go MFT! I'm also planning to get a G9II as I find MFT to have by far the best balance of capability and portability and a larger system would require me to carry my massive LowePro AW450 pack to fit six lenses covering 12-800mm EFL (1,600 if I get the Leica 100-400 Mk II and 2X TC) and that's not always practical. If I only shot short FLs, I'd consider something like a GFX100S, but the longest you can get for the X-Mount is 265mm EFL with the 1.4X TC on the GF 250mm f/4 R LM. I'd also need an EDC, but my GX85, FZ1000, and Oly TG-5 all serve that purpose well, depending on the situation. Of course, everyone's needs/preferences are different, which is why it's nice to have so many great choices these days. I also plan to digitize my negatives and some prints and slides (30+ years worth), but I was planning to use my Epson V600 scanner for that (it's worked well so far). Do you see an advantage in actually photographing them rather than scanning (and how are you handling that logistically)?
@mattisulanto
@mattisulanto 11 месяцев назад
Thanks. I had a G9 and some other Lumix cameras, but not any more. If you already have a scanner, use that. I did not want buy a scanner and I thought a macro lens is more versatile and I can use it even after I'm finished with the films.

When discussing the Viltrox, 28mm, f1.8 (9:55) you compared it to the Sony, 28mm, f2.0 and said you didn’t like the Sony. I saw your youtube comparing the Sony 28mm, f2.0, to the fixed lens of the Leica Q series. You had a lot of nice things to say about the Sony 28mm, f2.0, so I’m disappointed hearing it didn’t actually work out, and that there are a lot of quality variations. I am a small lens fan also and was thinking about the Sony 28mm, f2.0, for a more compact setup for times I don’t want to shoot with my larger 24mm, f1.4 GM, “really nice lens”.

Thank you for this video. It is interesting to see what gear the people I watch on YT use and why. Nobody should purchase a camera because a YT content producer uses a particular bit of gear. Everyone has individual needs and financial resources. We all need to use the right tool for the right job. There is a reason there are so many manufacturers and models available for us to choose. I have some of the M43 lenses you mentioned. I just purchased the GX9 along with the P12-60 lens. A very nice small and light weight kit. I also use the PL15mm lens with this body. I came to the GX 9 independent from you. I’m sorry your IBIS isn’t working. It may be cheaper to purchase a new used body than get the camera fix. That is so sad. I also enjoy using bodies with an APSC sensor. I am firmly a crop sensor photographer .For me there is little benefit using full frame gear. Mask On Nurse Marty (Ret)

You are having to make difficult decisions on what to take and what to leave behind. You have older cameras that are part of your evolution as photographer and you have an enotional connection to them. I am sometimes amazed at what the engineers and designers at the beginning of mirrorless were able to create, so these cameras are still relavent today. I hope they don't sit in storage indefinitely! Even with your slimmed down equipment list, you are going to need multiple camera bags to get them where you are going! Bon voyage and I look forward to videos from Asia.

Nice video. No telezoom lens? By far my favorite lens for full-frame is the Tamron 70-180 f2.8 because at 180mm 2.8 it's so extremely awesome for portrait shoots outside. This look is so great, I love it. I definitely prefer this look over my Sigma 85mm f1.4 because of the less compressed background. But of course you don't always have the space for 180mm, then the 85mm is my 2nd choice. For traveling/ hiking I'm nowadays limiting myself to a small and lightweight 50mm f1.8. But I could also imagine to try out 40mm or the 45mm Samyang.

Digitising slides and negatives? Whilst I do have a slide duplicator lens (with a thread mount that can adapt to almost anything) I do find a negative scanner so much better and easier to use, especially as the software can be set up to restore faded colours and repair. Like 69Mp and 48-bit. When we have so many to work through, much quicker.
@mattisulanto
@mattisulanto 11 месяцев назад
I did not want to buy a scanner for that and I thought I may have some other use for the macro lens too. The lens was also a lot cheaper than a good scanner. Scanning with a camera is pretty swift once you get your set up and workflow sorted.
