Best Lumix camera ever? LX7 with flawless 24-90mm f1.4 - 2.3 Leica brand lens. ND filter built-in. Really good 1080p video performance with O.I.S. 10MPX multi aspect ratio sensor. Hot shoe with availability to put external EVF. 37mm filter mount (with adapter). And everything with extreme small package. I use this camera even today and make an A4 printouts. There is a lot to love 📸
I own the GX8 and for me it is maybe the most underrated camera on the market. I'm still impressed by this small but super solid model and I will never give it away.
GX80 / 85 fills the gap perfectly for me for street and travel photography. compact handsome body, 16MP is plenty, beautiful jpeg profiles, image stabilization, even 4k. Though I am curious what a gx10 might offer ;-)
May I suggest that by implying that the best were the previous. except S1 which is current it implies no progress has been made? Maybe if a particular individual feature of old models was identified (buttons, layout, menu, ect) and it's present form on current Panasonic's was considered inferior perhaps that could be discussed...May purists are returning to older lenses for the effect/style they produce perhaps that merits discussion? Always interesting videos... and much enjoyed Thank you
You may suggest. It's only a list of cameras that I think are or were really good. I think it's obvious that a ten year old camera would not be the best today, but of course you are free to interpret whatever you like😀
I have a GM1 (smallest of all mft cameras), a GH2 (there were many hacks to improve video quality at the time), a GX8 (which like the olympus PEN-F is still considered as superb) and a GX800 (great photo and video features for a small travel camera). Next on my wish list is the G9; just waiting for prices to drop some more.
Good list of great cameras. I used to have an LX-1, but it was soaked with saltwater during sailing. I got an LX-2 after that and still have it. I have used it for many years. I have also a GH-4 for video work. I agree that it still could be used with no problem. It has very good video quality and features.
My S1R is for me the most impressive and versatile creative tool I ever have... (I don't do videos) Lots of pixels to play with (especially for someone like me who wanted to play with aspect ratios like XPan and still retain enough MP), very good low light capabilities (thanks to the IBIS who helps a lot more than I thought to keep the ISO down... but still ISO 6400 is great and even 12800 can be used sometimes, especially in black and white), great ergonomics and menus, excellent evf and screen (who tilt just the way I like) etc... It tick all the boxes for the camera I wanted (alongside my Fuji X-pro3), except maybe the weight, but it makes it more secure in the hands and make me more stable so not really a problem. As I didn't have any other Panasonic cameras before (beside a bridge longtime ago...) and my S1R is few months new, I am a little biased of course... 😅
That was my list and yours is probably different. No need to get upset😀 Olympus product, no matter how awesome, does not belong on any Panasonic Lumix list.
My first Lumix cmera the G85 is an good hybrid. The G9 is capable for stills and vids. Now I’ve got the S5 too which is grerat for the price. I surely thought the S5 would make this list.
My list would be the G1, love that camera, still have it, converted to infrared. The GX1, love the rangefinder style. The FZ200, this was my grab and go camera. The GH3, I don't do video and this camera got me to do a bit of it and still have great stills. The LX100, great compact camera with lots of control. The GX8, fantastic all around great shooter. The G9, like you this is my absolute favorite Micro Four Thirds camera. The S5, my first full frame digital camera. Our lists are very similar, thank you for doing this. p.s. I still have all these cameras, I go back to the older ones from time to time just for fun.
The S5 offers pro style video features in a micro four thirds size body, at a street price that matches m43 and aps-c cameras. Plus comprehensive stills capability for hybrid shooters. My favourites are the true micro cameras of the m43 range, like the LX3.
Fun video content. My first ever camera - at 68 years old was the fz300 bridge. It was an absolute dream to learn on. I now have a g85. It is light, easy to use and does everything I need for a fun hobby. Lumix makes wonderful, usable cameras. I love the ergonomics of my g85 and I tried several other brands before buying..
Great video, congratulations! 👏🏿👏🏽👏🏿👏🏼I think there are three other cameras that must be part of "the best Panasonic cameras of all time": LX-100, LX-100II and GH-5!😉
G9 is my all day, everyday go to with the excellent G80 in support... Used for all types of still photography & occasionally the odd video.. Good selection Matti...!
I use the G85 (Canada), and it's a really nice compromise in the Lumix line up. Yes, I could afford the G9, but all the features it has would be hard for me to justify (plus heavier body). My only issue with it is that it does not support USB charging. It annoys me how practically all 'modern' Lumix cameras have touch screen AF because when I use my Sony RX100 III, I just want to touch the screen (nothing happens though haha)!
Looking for a good streetphotography camera and with my limited budget I went for the DC-GX9 and the Leica 15mm F1.7. Can't wait till the lockdown and curfew are over. Stay safe you all. Cheers from the Netherlands.
G9; High grade Micro 4/3s camera. LX10; direct competitor to the RX100. LX100; A competitive compact camera with a Micro 4/3 sensor. GX85; A compact rangefinder style camera FT7; First rugged/waterproof camera with EVF. S5; An entry level Full Frame that carries the best features from the micro 4/3 format (Live Composite and High Res Shot). G100; Hated by most for removing features, but the video ratios and vertical video are a step in the right direction.
FZ1000 was far ahead of its time and I am on my second. I am a rank JPG amateur and I love it. That and the LX100ii are all I need. Thank you Panasonic.
Hi Matti, good one! I'm enjoy & learning my G9 and still shooting on my LX100 & ZS100 is very nice also (and share same battery type) Sometime it would be great if you could make a video with your advice about how to shoot / digitize old 35mm slides & film in to Lumix camera - now we all have more time to do such projects! Thanks, @Jon Hammond
I wish that Panasonic would do an advanced but simple camera. Like a an LX100 and a G9 combined with focus on knobs to turn and fewer menu choices more like settings. Let me be in charge of the photos. High technology: AF, sensor, 1.4 lens super quality zoom, but let me do the fiddling of the knobs. Take away PASM and replace it with White Balance knob and ISO Knob. The “LUMIX In Charge” camera.
That would be cool! However, because it doesn't cost any more to add those features you wanted leave out, we are not likely to see such a camera. Most people want more even though they are never going to use all those features😀
In my opinion, it is not relevant to list the "best" Lumix cameras. Almost all Panasonic cameras were good for their time. And Panasonic didn't start from scratch, many years before they made their first photo camera they were making excellent video cameras. But if I have to mention one camera it is the FZ 20. (5 MP bridge camera) It revitalized my photography. I used it for almost 10 years.
Panasonic is a religion :) Everyone who started with Panasonic cameras stops at this brand. They (Panasonic) are always ahead and think about the people who use their products. He himself started in 2007 with Panasonic FZ8 and until 2019 shot on it, almost always in automatic mode, to such an extent he has smart "brains". I had to switch to other modes only in special cases, for example, in the dark. In 2019, I "came across" Lumix G6 with which I felt the full power of manual shooting and the possibility of interchangeable lenses. And it turned me on! The next device was Lumix G9, the top of technology at the present time. What a picture he has! In 99% of cases, there is no need to shoot in RAW. Thanks to Matti and other tech bloggers for similar and detailed reviews to help you make the right choice for everyone!
Good list Matti. I have only used a handful of Lumix, but my favorite is the GF-1. I like it so much I bought two bodies in case one broke, but it never did. Panasonic cameras and lenses are the only system I have used in my 58 years that never needed a repair or service ever. Stay safe.
I dusted off my GF1 recently and I've been loving it's output. Truly was a game changer for me- my first digital camera and I took that thing everywhere... John Muir Trail, all across the Sierras, up Yosemite big walls and it still works like the day I bought it. I scoff at those who claim they need weather sealing...
Hah ! OK My list is as follows :- LX3, GF1, GM1, LX100, and GX9. Tested the G9 but did not like the bulky form factor, thus, bought the GX9 instead. I wonder from now on wheter Lumix would introduce more Micro4/3 cameras since they have moved on to full frame. Hope the don't sbandon the format. I can say it is still my favourite format due to its size for street snd travel photography. For most use, I am still very impressed by the GM1 which is very unique. Extremely small yet it can perform very well in image quality. Hope Lumix can return to make an update version of this which I doubt they will. Only drawnack of this camera is the rather slow mechanical shutter speed of 1/500 sec shutter speed.
I haven't used more than 3 Lumix cameras. GH5, G9 and G100 cameras. I think they all have great qualities and offer much to those of us who are on a budget. I buy all my lens used, with a few exceptions. I should clarify, my work bought the GH5, I was so impressed, I bought a G9, thinking that camera was more geared toward photography. My daughter was so impressed that she bought a G100, hoping to use that for her RU-vid projects. I am a videographer getting into photography as a hobby, and something to pursue during retirement. Also it might be a good side job after retirement.
Very interesting list, but I find the title misleading. The cameras listed are perhaps the most IMPRESSIVE, but clearly NOT the BEST, as in all cases (except the G9) the successor camera is significantly better than the "original" one in the series. Also, I think the GF1 is missing from this list introducing a smaller format (than the DLSR design) of the camera.
It is a list of MY favorite Lumix cameras, it's an opinion and can't be misleading. You may have a different opinion and YOUR list can be totally different, but it's still as valid as mine. It's just a list of cameras, after all😀
@@mattisulanto Hi, Thanks for your comment. I fully accept what you are saying, It's just the title that I found a bit misleading. I think it would have been more accurate to put My FAVORITE Lumix cameras, or something like that. In any way I value and appreciate your blogs and opinions as I follow my favorite Finish photographer's (you and Peter Forsgard) blogs.
I started with a Lumix G2 in 2012 or so, upgraded to G7 in 2022 and if I had some money to spare, I´d definitely get a G9... But I also wanted to try a full-frame, so these days I mostly play with a Canon 6D (original) with a 1.8 nifty-fifty on it...
I really like this video Matti. Excellent 👍🏽. I don't have even 5 favourite camera's to choose but just 3. First, I picked up my first love again and that is photography. I was a amature photographer ln the beginning of the 80s. I stopped when my daughter was born in 1993. I started with the Canon T90. This model was the topline of Canon in the 80s and later on I changed gear to Minolta Dynax 7000i. So just for few years ago I picked up the Photography again, as everthing is digital so I had to learn the things again. So I started with the Fujifilm X-E1, later on I picked up a cheap Samsung NX300M. After these models I choose or switched to Panasonic and bought a cheap Lumix GX1. A very compact camera with a small grip but very useable as a street camera. It has a fixed screen but other than that a great camera to start with. Next one is another compact camera the LumixGF7. I started to use this camera for my RU-vid content and it works fine. For a minor upgrade and to stay in the compact corner, I choose the GX800. And this camera can shoot to 4k. It's more like a vlog camera but is suits my channel. And for the next step and biggest change for my channel I have purchased the Lumix G90. I don't know how it feels in my hand but according to your review on this camera it must be good. Will be continued 😉👍🏽
I hereby nominate this video for inclusion in the Lumix Hall Of Fame Museum. I've been without a camera (other than my cell phone) for about seven years. I had a Canon Rebel and several very good lenses. But living here in the tropics, mold etched the mirror and the inside of the lenses. And so they sat, in their sad state, in the closet for all these years. Now the photography bug has bitten me again and, thanks to your wonderful videos, I'm about to assemble a G9 kit. And this one I will keep in a closet with a dehumidifier! Thank you for all your videos!
@@mattisulanto the previous g95 listed as discontinued at BNH with this new model coming soon. Other then IP straming I do not see anything else new. Hoping they updated the EVF and eliminated the 4k crop. Since leaving M43 I've missed the lenses, handling and those menus greatly. Might re invest
Thanks. Well, the "only 1080" in this case was, because virtually all new cameras can do 4K, which is the standard today. There is nothing wrong with 1080p, of course and it's still enough for many purposes.
The only difference for me would be choosing the GH2 over the GH1. The GH2 had such a tremendous impact on the video world, and especially so with the many hacks that were created for it. There are still people today who use the GH2 to shoot video. I never had one, but I'd still like to purchase one. The G9 is definitely a camera I'd like to have, as well as the S1. Thanks for all the great videos you have produced for us.
Very well said. Exactly my point and I use both the GH2 and the G9. To see a private person’s firmware knowledge completely change the interest for the GH2 and revolutionize the usage, must have been exciting for anyone.
I actually really love my LX100, it's a great compromise. Excepts that dust gets easily inside and cleaning the sensor is kinda beyond my technical abilities
Hi, I started with Lumix TZ7, then learnt a lot on the FZ200 before my g9. The G9 has held its own for nearly 5 years especially with the firmware upgrades. One point I will make is that it is ergonomically lovely just to pick up and my sized hands find it very comfortable to use, I think that anyone buying a new camera should try the camera out in a shop or otherwise because if. camera doesn't feel good in your hand you may well use it less often.I would rather have a camera that may not be quite as good as others but "feel right", The g9 is quite a large bodied m4/3 which makes it well balanced with larger lenses attached.
In 2014 I bought my first Lumix camera GX7. I really loved it. Now this camera is used by my son. From 2018 I moved to G9. It's my favourite Lumix camera.
Tusen tack för ditt svar , trevligt & så kul du kunde förstå Svenska . Jag kan gå in på Google översätt för att få det på Svenska , men förstår rätt mycket Engelska . Säg gärna vad du tycker om FZ 2000 . Önskar dig en trevlig fortsatt dag Hasse I Angered The Sheriff ha ha .
I got a gx85 a couple years ago and think its an excellent camera once you work it out. So many bells and whistles. I also have an olympus em5 which is also excellent. Its a little older but it has a unique character and I feel better for photography. That said the gx85 has the more modern features such as focus peaking and silent shutter and much more. I love them all..
I'm surprised you didn't mention the GH2, its video capabilities - especially with all the hacks available - were outstanding and renowned and acknowledged worldwide. The masterpiece film 'Upstream Color' that I saw on a big screen in the cinema was filmed with a hacked GH2 (see trailer-> ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-5U9KmAlrEXU.html) , it shows what this camera was capable of with regard to film/video. I still do have two GH2 cameras, but nowadays I use the GX9, a perfect small camera, especially great for street photography, but also delivering great video.
My top2: GH1 and GM1. My only Lumixes! Purchased the GH1 for video work, but paired with the miniscule 14/2.5 it quickly became my daily all-around camera. Especially loved the multi-aspect ratio sensor and the onboard mics on it. The GM1 is a lovely pocket cam, and still sees occasional use due to size. One aspect I noticed.. you talked a lot in past tense. Makes me wonder; do new cameras make older ones obsolete?
Of the ones I’ve owned, the GX7 well-built and the perfect size for a rangefinder style camera. The GX8 was a joy to use thanks to the better EVF over its predecessor. The GX800 is ultra-portable, great twinned with a pancake lens and surprisingly good image quality. I now have the G9 which is superb. Tempted of course by the S-series.
Despite having 2 sony bridge cameras and a sony slt77 I bought FZ1000 because of ıt!s 1" sensor. and it never disappointed me. Even in 2022 ı still use it as my main travel camera.
For me, I still video conference using the g85, for long hikes it is the G9 in my bag, and the S1R for photo trips (with tripod mostly). On my daily bike rides, it is an older ZS70 compact camera, 30x optical zoom, I can take it out of my coat pocket, turn it on, zoom, take photos, and put it back in one handed. The larger size for a modern point and shoot actually helps with that.
One of my first cameras was the Lumix LC-1 back in 2004. I only shot JPG because there was mostly Photoshop and no, for me intuitiv RAW-converters/editors at that time. At ISO 100 the colors was very nice. ISO 400 was just too much for my use. No 2 was the Lumix LF1 a small sensor 1.1/7 and an EVF! and a 28-200mm! eq lens. NO 3 most be the Lumix GX8 and with the old 7-14mm f4 lens it was very nice. That's about it. I do not think I appriciate the M43 cameras for what it really was back then because there was coming newer and "better" cameras all the time and someone always shouted how bad the previous cameras was and it was kind of parroting all over internet. To me it seams like smaller sensor is the way to go. We just have to learn more how to process the files and how to use them.
After years of Minolta film cameras, I got an FZ50. to back it up. a TZ10, an FZ 47 was added later. I then got interested in mirrorless cameras and bought a G2 and a G10 as a backup, these two are my current workhorses, the TZ10 sits in the car glove box for emergencies. I am more than satisfied with these and a few assorted lenses with no desire to upgrade. Thanks for your numerous videos.
I'm still using the G3. Still like the body, really captures the small build, despite hinting at DSLR style. Had everything I wanted from a camera back in 2011. Currently thinking of upgrading to a GX9 or G100. But been enjoying playing around with it again just recently. It served me well a couple of years ago when travelling. Just got the Panasonic 20mm which I can't wait to properly test.
Keep using the G3... IMO 5 years ago the G3 would feel highly outdated, but its so old now and MFT as evolved so much that the G3 maybe quite fun to use. I have a G9 but recently picked back up my GF1 and it's an absolute blast to use!
Are you going to do a video on the G100? I think the best camera is the one you have with you when there is a picture to take. That’s one spot where the G100 shines. Pair it with a super wide angle and it’s dynamite.
i've taken probably several thousand pics with my lumix cameras, starting with the zs3, then the zs6 (which i still have!), then the zs19/20; then had to get the 1000, great addition - loved it; finally - almost i got the g85, probably the best, most versatile camera i'd ever owned! then, looking at some of your you tube videos and others, out went the 1000 and the 85, traded for my newishbest ever camera- the g9. i'm just starting to get into this camera but it's fantastic. keep those videos coming matti, they're all very helpful. norm
Honourable mentions: the LC1: the first rangefinder inspired digital camera, the FZ35: a classic bridge camera with a super zoom lens and the TZi: the first compact travel zoom camera.
Only own one Panasonic Camera (FZ300) currently. Did own the FZ2500 but like the 300 for its weather proof system. I like watching your channel because I wish to purchase a Micro Third one.
The first ever camera I've ever owned and bought with my own money was the FZ8. Great camera, but yes, the image noise was atrocious. Still, I made so many memorable pictures with that camera.
I tried the GX8 but I preferred to buy the Olympus Pen F, I couldn't resist its look. I have the Panasonic Lumix GM1, i think the GM1 should be in tehe list because is the smallest interchangeable lens camera ever built. For years it has been in my pocket and I was never disappointed. It is ideal as a second camera due to its small size but allowing us to use all the micro 4/3 lenses that we have in our backpack.
One should mention the innovative Panasonic L1. A 7.5MP range finder styled DSLR with, as a 'kit lens', a 14-50mm, image stabilised Leica Panasonic, zoom.
My best 5 would be 5.GF1 - my first m4/3 camrea. 4.GX8 - lots of technology packed m4/3 camera at that moment. 3. G85 - best budget video camera IMO. 2.LX100II - good camera with small package, best compact camera I've ever used. 1.G9 - need nothing to say about it.
I use a GH5 and GH5s, but the most fun I have with the GX9. Small, handsome, instant ready for all opportunities with a big picture quality and it's excellent b/w profiles...
My all-time favourite was my GF1 which had superb ergonomics. I've also owned a G3 and LX5. My current cameras are a G90 and GX80. I was so impressed by the GX80 (which replaced my GF1) that I sold off all my Nikon gear then bought the G90 and more lenses. I thought the G9 was physically too large for my liking and did contemplate buying an E-M1mkii instead, but decided the G90 would be a better choice due to Dual IS with my lenses and same menu system. I'm very happy with the G90/GX80 combination
My Lumix cameras are as follows: FZ1000 (which I sold) My favorite small camera which I still have as it fits easily into my pocket is the Lumix GX85, Then the Lumix G85, bought for the great stabilization which I still have. Then the GH4 which I gave to my daughter when I bought the GH5. These cameras have been primarily for video. I also have the Olympus OM-D-M1 ii. Since most reviewers seemed to think there was a slight edge to the Olympus over the G9, that is what I amusing for pictures only. So that's my list.
I like my G9 with the Panasonic Leica 10-25 f/1.7 lens for everyday shooting. I have gained enough confidence in this camera that I am buying the fast f/1.2 Nocticron lens for portrait photography. I am practical enough not to spend ten times the money on a 90 mm Summilux f/1.5 lens for my M camera and not getting acceptable images knowing my imperfect focusing skill.
From ergonomic point of view the best camera for me has been the GX8. I liked its non-professional look (no problem to take the camera to a concert, to take people on the streets, etc). The grip of the GX8 doesn’t look (or feel) so good like of the G9, but (contrary to the G9) I had never had any cramping with it holding the camera for hours. But the best of the camera was its tilting viewfinder which I have been missing badly since I have a G9 (and an S5 now). As for the G9, I like the pictures’ quality of the camera. It is so good that I’m not sure I should keep my S5 (which provides an incremental quality improvement visible in 100% view only).
I agree, The GX8 was the perfect embodiment of MFT. Many people thought the rangefinder design is an aesthetic one but the touchscreen implementation AF while looking through the tilting viewfinder is one of the most highly underrated features of any camera ever. I am faster and more accurate at single point AF on the GX8 than I am with AFC + Face/Eye/Body/Animal detection + joystick on the G9. I love the G9, it's a beast. But IMO the traditional DSLR design doesn't work as well- why limit a mirrorless camera to a faux prism and center mounted viewfinder?
