In this video I will walk through step by step how I made a tap follower to accurately tap holes by hand on the milling machine. I have wanted to make one of these for a while as they are really handy when it comes to tapping straight holes.
If you are new to machining like I am or just have a passion and are interested in it then why not considering Subscribing to my channel its completely free and who knows may just help you out. LINK BELOW

That looks like an insert for aluminium you have on that tool. Nothing wrong with that, I use them all the time for most everything including steel. Just need to be careful with them as they chip very easily as they are ground so sharp. (if that is what they are of course) Reamers tend to enjoy a bit of lube when they are working. Noticed you changed the insert to do the pointy bit, any reason?

Yeah you are completely right there the insert used is a CCGT insert and I found them great on the mini lathe. You are also right in saying they chip easy hence the different tool for doing the tip of the tap follower. Appreciate your input on the channel all the best.

Nice job Joe, definitely worth having in the tool box. I think a tap follower was the 2nd or 3rd thing I made on my lathe. Just one recommendation, it's worth making a second insert with a small inverted cone for smaller taps that have a point at the end instead of a centre. Keep up the good work mate.

Hi Dan thank you yeah definitely worth having. I didn’t even think about the taps with a point on the end great idea. All the best.

Metal has a 'skin' oh yes it does, you need to get under the skin or you will wear your tool away unnecessarily. you were going pretty slow anyway, but in general, if you have to just skim a bit off, drop your revs a bit and use coolant.

Thank you for the advise Garry, This is my first video where I flipped the image and if it’s hard to follow I won’t do it again. All the best.

You chipped your tool tip, swarf should come off bright and curly (is OK a bit blue with those carbide inserts) yours is coming off in stereo from 1 tool tip. But keep going, it's the only way to learn. (I started in Engineering in 1974 and I mill, turn, shape, slot, turn, jig bore, CNC, grind, tinsmith, blacksmith, and did I say turning?)

Yeah I have noticed the ccgt inserts I’ve been using give great finish but do chip very easy. Good to know about what colour chips I should be getting. Sounds like you have plenty of experience always good to hear from Experienced machinists.

@@MachiningwithJoe hss and brazed carbide are sharper, but with care the carbide inserts will last a lot longer. Just keep plodding along, you will pick stuff up on the way, if you do something not quite right there are plenty of idiots like me to put you right. Although we differ on a few points like English grammer and American grammer just to name 1 dispute Joe Pieczynski is a good machinist as is Aboms, and Blondie, my favourite though, is, This Old Tony. One thing I have not mentioned and others have but us very important....... Safety Glasses! How important is your eyesight to you. When I first started Engineering, my own optician would supply me with safety glasses that the company would pay for, and now I have to go to a big opticians in the town and they sort it for me. You do not have that luxury, go to Boots and have a chat with them about safety glasses, it is really really important to safeguard your eyesight. Ps. Off to Warco soon to have a look round 😜
