Glad you mentioned there are different recipes. I used bees wax instead of the poo. I made some to secure sinue and goose feathers to stone axe shaft I made. Great video !!!

@@DonnyDustsPaleoTracks Thank you for this video!! A while ago I harvested a lot of resin from a big piece of cut lumber. I got really lucky and got a 6ft section of 2by12 from a jobsite because it had a complete vein of resin running through the middle of it from end to end that was ⅛"-½" thick making it unusable. Now I finally have a good recipie for some glue, I'm making a hatchet handle out of some maple, and I'm planning to use the resin to hot-seal the handle, and the glue to fill any gaps in the head when I go to wedge it. You might've answered it in another video, but if you do see this, where do you find all that obsidian for knapping?😳
@artsy_dragon_creations

So glad I finally found this. I’ve been really interested in trying to make pine pitch glue because I’ve heard it’s really durable, but I’ve wanted to avoid using animal droppings if I could just for convenience and sanitary purposes. Thanks Donny, I’m learning tons from your videos!

I don’t know how to thank properly for all the indo you share in your channel. Put that aside, only one sentence need a appreciation: (to imply not to damage the nature when gathering the resin) Just take what you need. Wish every man knew and behaved like that.

Fixed a leaking canoe with a pine resin mixture once ,,, up in the Boundry waters canoe area ,, it was an outfitter rental kevlar canoe,, older beat up, thin in spots from wear,, got pulled onto shore with a load in it and it folded in the middle, creating cracks on each side,, duct tape wouldnt stick to it, so ,, pine glue ,inside and out all over the cracks,put it in the water without a load ,,, and NO LEAKS ! still had to reinforce the floor in the middle with long sticks ,, put the backpacks over the sticks , and more sticks over the backpacks, and jamed under the outer ,upper frame rail, pushing down the packs in order to keep the hull from flexing .. made it 17 miles to get out,, without getting wet ! This stuff works! Cool video,,

The only thing I know: pine glue in former days smelled much better than some glues nowadays... 😆 No, I'm not a glue sniffer... ☝️ It is interessting to see how our ancestors 3-, 4-, 5000 years ago made their stuff like ordinary glue. And I'm impressed when I think about it, that they had no books or television who telled them how to do it. They had to find it out for herself! Sometimes I think people in former days where smarter than us, but they had not the knowledge we have today...

When i was about 19 or 20, i was gathering birch bark and pitch for a north american wigwam, or wiki-up depending on wich name and tribe you go with. Alot was trial and error, some was luck, but i did have a fairly large structure in 6-7 months. Used mostly blown down salvage birches from storms because i knew i'd mess up alot along the way. Started with bailing twine for sewing seems together, but quickly opted for spruce roots, pine roots, and fur roots. They are absolutely incredible actually- maybe its the pitch content in them. I started with an 8 foot diameter circle, but dropped it to about 6 or 5 when winter came. Modified it on the fly sort of speak. I had gathered spruce pitch from red norway sruce here in maine. There was a very old stand of about 2 acres. These things- come spring, would seep baseball sized portions of pitch from crotches, broken limbs, and sometimes around perfectly healthy limbs like the tree was just breaming full of it. It was rather amazing. Our black spruce produce much less in comparison but of what seems a higher quality. Higher melting point, harder, than the norway spruce. They both seem to mix very well together. Apon sewing and waterproofing the seems, i would take white ash and poor it all over the pitched seems. Bugs did not like it, and it added some resistance to the sun to keep it from further melting. After each time it rained i would dust it with ash just to keep up on it and give it some more thermal defense in summer. I learned alot working and crafting that shelter. This was before i ever had internet access in and of my home. I hope to build another on soon now that i have my own house and property close to my original project. I have a profound and deep intrest and fascination with our local indians of maine all starting from the fourth grade. I hope to apply all that i learned, and new things that i have learned to future projects. I hope to one day build a nice birch bark canoe using strict traditional methods and materials. Love your video's man! Any thoughts or observations on pitch and its various forms and properties and craft i'd love to hear. I am fascinated with it deeply

7:45, when the pitch ball is a bit too hot to handle comfortably, tend to dip the ball into the char-pile to thicken & cool the melted pitch a bit faster... which Donny probably does when not explaining things to a camera. Seriously neat content. Chel nok.
