While the touch button is impressive, it would still be best if you have the button option. What happen if the touch button stop functioning and you want to bring back the roof?
you know you screwed up when a fellow german says that this feature is redundant and cumbersome🤣🤣.i love your reviews thomas.please keep up the good work and have a prosperous and happy new year😃
Very disappointed in this new SL....Was hoping they would go simpler, no screens, minimal crap on the dash, basic cloth top and available with a 6 cylinder 300hp without the AMG boy racer adds.
16:40 A few years ago, Mercedes announced a new safety feature. The car make loud noise using speakers just before collision to make your ears ready for the noisy crash. People are loosing their hearing after car accidents, Mercedes say. In this case the car probably didn’t believe you are in control when having a skid in sport+ mode :-D without realising you are a Thomas A in wide-open area.
Agreed. I am a 100% Mercedes-Benz guy, lifetime fan, driver, collector to very basic and never liked Porsche, nor BMW. There are a few older models that are nice, but I don't think I would never cheat on Mercedes-Benz.
@@autogefuehl what he means is that the Sl is above the 911, no matter if the current SL is sporty or not. Btw, the digital buttons on the wheel, werent they firstly used in a Merc car? I also dont really got your comprison with 911. the SL was and is something special no matter how the car is set up.
Thanks Thomas. A great review of a beautiful car. I haven’t been a big fan of more recent Mercedes designs, but this one looks instantly iconic. And you know you’re not on the German autobahn when you see a pickup truck in the side view mirror!
The ugliest SL ever. An angry toy for the rich but not a collectible by far. This car will lose all value very quickly. It breaks my heart how Wagener has managed to destroy all of the Mercedes design in 20 years. PS yes, because it's not an SL, it's a rebranded AMG GT roadster.
Is it impossible to make elegant interiors anymore? Like the w107 and w129 had. Why this cheap plastic arcade game look? It looks like some childrens toy...
I think the sound you heard was a safety measure from the sound system. The car thought you were going to crash and to reduce hearing damage (loud crash) it plays a sound which causes the insides of the ear to contract. Because of the contraction it lets less sound in and reduces the possibility of getting deaf.
Great review as always. Love the way things are honestly explained and tested. There are a lot of channels on car reviews but none like this. Congratulations. The car in this video also helps. It`s amazing. A big evolution on the SL.
Very good review. I feel like your honesty came through regardless of the effort flying thousands of miles coming to LA. One of the few reviewers with a solid working experience driving every generation SL. So your impression matters to actual SL drivers. Thomas and crew are always FIRST online and worldwide. Danke shön mein Herren.
Those juddering wiper blades are driving me NUTS. Also, I feel like this car is a little too hard. I agree with Thomas. Not a real SL. Too much of a sports car. Even in comfort it looks stiff.
That’s strange sound was a pre collision safety system. It’s play that noise from the audio system before you will be crash the car. It’s will be make you hear blind before actual crash and when will be happening that it’s doesn’t bother the crash sounds that match. Basically this system protect your hearing and leveling out the crash sounds and noises.
" ... but it's not a Mercedes SL" the car summed up in just a few words, well said Thomas! Am I the only one that thinks AMG is over dominating Mercedes these days? Let's hope the smaller engined variants bring back some of the elegance which this AMG has lost.
Well, few points: 1. Elegance does not sell, at least according to the OEMs, so they do this aggressive nonsense. Smaller engines won't bring elegance but cheapness instead because that's how germans do things. 2. The SL stands for Sport and Leicht, which is what 300SL actually was. None of the other SLs were that though. Some of them were good cruisers but lazy and too heavy. Only one true production SL actually exists and then the brand shifted towards old mans sofa somehow. At least first few generations were cool but not anymore. I agree that Mercedes is too obsessed with AMG but bringing the SL to the AMG was the right decision and they should have done that decades ago.
Thank you for that final verdict! Even if they ultimately had to change direction to bring the non-existing sales up again, this has become just another AMG. The SL had been in a class of it`s own as an elegant cross-continent land-yacht, with the added 365 day practicability of the hardtop and a proper boot. And also, to this day I haven't come across a digital tochscreen solution in a car, that would be more ergonomical and user-friendly than a simple dial or button to push.
Thanks for another great, and most of all, honest revue. As a big fan of r107 models, I agree with your verdict. But I also respect the opinion of it to be more sporty like its roots with the 300SL. I guess it is a matter of what type of car you prefer really. Personally I had hoped for more Mercedes-Benz Classic, and less AMG. Not all Mercedes-Benz have to be aggressive looking. Don't forget elegance!
An updated AMG GT roadster with an SL badge slapped on it, and not delivering enough that is expected from either model. Given this compromise, it's priced too high and will probably be a dud for Mercedes, especially since you can buy a used S-Class cabriolet if you want a top-down cruiser or a used AMG GTC roadster if you want a top-down bruiser.
Well it replaces the GT Roadster and S-Class Cabriolet at the same time. Clearly it isn't as sporty and also not as luxurious as the others but it's still a good (looking) derivative. Competition is now 911, BMW 8-Series and Lexus LS 500 Cabriolets. Not Bentley and Rolls-Royce anymore. The GT competitor has always been the 911 maybe even the R8/Huracan
Thanks Thomas, always informative and entertaining! It’s a beautiful cabrio - mixing the best of the 3 vehicles it replaces, except for the missing switches with only a few flimsy haptic? ones that made the cut. The steering wheel is also a step back from say the AMG wheel in my GLC 43, though it looks good. Overall, only a mix of existing Merc designs and parts, which isn’t bad; just expected something a bit more adventurous with this release. Still we should be happy that the glorious AMG V8 lives a few more years. 😀👏
not sure about this car "replacing the S-Class cabriolet", they are actually completely different otherwise as always one of the best reviews out there from Thomas!
Yes indeed, it is also way different than the outgoing SL that’s what I’m saying is that they are canceling basically three models and put one model instead
The new SL seems to be an updated AMG GT convertible. If you look at it, the GT was meant to be a 911 rival. Would like to see a comparison of the SL63 and the Lexus LC500 Convertible. Also Tony! Toni! Toné! was wrong! It does rain in Southern California. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Yp_5pQGTAtI.html
Not sure what you are speaking of “the windows don”t go up” when operating the SL top? I have an SL (R231) and the windows go up and down with the top, or separately with the remote, or inside. Do you mean on the 2022 version they no longer do it? I am in the USA as well. Also you don’t have to point the remote, or get that close to the car for the remote to work. I have operated the remote while it was still in my pocket and not as close as you keep getting. FYI
Hi, I've never seen a new and impressive 2021 adventure and I love the new 2022 adventures the new Mercedes AMG SL 63 test drive in California was really cool!
Nice vehicle, but it seems to cater to the American market where there were complaints about the SLs handling and looks (oddly enough). I rather prefer the previous generations that were comfortable with some sporting elements. It makes so much more sense to me. I don't understand why so many reviewers only value cars for their sporting handling, exhaust note and 0-100 km/h time when there so many other good experiences to be had with vehicles like these. Thank goodness for Autogefuhl. Also in these expensive vehicles please add functional physical buttons for certain things like for climate controls and raise/lowering cabs, it is just more practical and we are all physical beings that like to hear a satisifying click or feel the push of a button. I think this looks like a really cool car, just not the direction I like the SL to take. Anyway, thanks again for the great content from Thomas and crew!
AGAIN.Thomas really is reliable for reviews. I'm glad I came here i'm glad I'm subscribed! Great content man Keep up the good work! My eye literally lit Up when I saw your face and that headliner! :X
911 is not going to be killed - it is a legend (and I am not fan of it). But this is really really great car. It has lost some of SL character (comfy grand touring specially) but that will probably save the SL sub-brand. Times are changing. Great review.
I agree I’m a big 911 fan and my dad had one growing up but this looks like it is just way more luxurious and a better car to drive daily in real life.
Oh my god! you activated the "You're about to crash", white noise, ear preparation noise from the Pre-Safe package! I've never heard it before. you must have done quite a launch!
Nice car.. am I the only finding it odd the row buttons and door button panels move when you push them? I'm assuming a little give helps relieve pressure. but it comes off very cheap to see the whole panel moving with light touch.
Looks are ok. But "SL"=Super Light=2000kg??? And then it's bloated best used as a boulevard/city and highway cruiser but seriously handicapped on a twisty, narrow mountain road.
That sound you heard is because it protect your ear drums. When the car thinks it will go into a accident, that sound is produced in case of a crash and helping you not to loose hearing after. Something like noise cancellation in case of accident.
What is an SL? A sporting car or a luxury cruiser? Way back in the day it was "sports light" nowadays it's a classy cruiser. And as the S-class coupe/cabriolet have gone and the AMG GT will return should SL not have remained a luxury cruiser placed above the E class?
It was heavy and complicated but I would only ever want the hard top version... I personally do not like this styling makeover of the SL.. The round headlamp version still remains the most elegant..
Just acquired 992 cab and would have considered this car as an alternative had it been available. It is very different than 911. Prefer the V8 power and sound as compared to 911, but interior appearance, Tesla like infotainment interface, not my taste. Maybe I’m not ready to adapt and this is the way forward. I’m a bit disappointed.
As a former SL Klass owner (R129-R230) i really don't understand the need to make it chasing a Porsche 911 even in the design. SL Klass should be the Mercedes flagship of elegance and confort. But despite this it looks nice, definitely better than the previous model (the ugliest SL ever)....good review as usual
nice look but many drawbacks: soft-top far less fancy than the original vario roof; ridiculous small boot not enough even for a shopping run, invasive infotainment screen, ...
I would take the AMG GT 63 4 door over this any day to be honest. These back seats are basically useless + all these capacitive BS makes the 4 door a much better value for money.
For the price of the car, it is disappointing there is so much gimmick, manual wind deflector, small boot despite soft top and wind noise from the windows. Good on you Thomas, struggling to keep a straight face.
by the time it is boring that all mercedes have the same v8 biturbo engine.. nothing new. Doesnt matter what amg u buy all is same except the appearance. No matter you buy a c63 amg or s63 amg sl63 amg.. all has the same hp, same stats.. why should i spend more cas for "higher" class if i can get the same hp in the cheapest amg too...
it is ironic that this model was usually driven by older people and MB by trying to appeal to younger buyers most likely lost their base customer... re: looks way too gimmicky. Hard pass
it is not a ugly car, far from that but the class of the previous model is gone....it looks like every other racy Mercedes. No special design elements.....and it is heavy
such a disappointment... they could have built anything else... so sad they built a bigger amg gt with cls headlights... they got this very wrong. they should have just cancelled the sl for a car cycle. the sl gave mercedes its brand identity and to be handled in such a way seems almost disrespectful.
I know there is some nonsense US regulation that dictates it but the insistence on slapping ugly "extensions" at the rear of nice European cars just smacks of jealousy!
@@herbst963 it's a feature on all models it's part of pre safe it does it to protect your ears. It triggers your ears to do something that protects you from hearing loss in an accident
Agree with comparisons to Porsche 911. That's the market they are going for. Most people are buying suvs doing city driving. If you want a convertible with lots of hp you have to pay. Mercedes is smart to stay with their roots. Just look at the 911. There is no question when you see one. For the interior, its another step back. It's unergonomic and not driver friendly. You can't use hey mercedes with the top down, or see the screen on a sunny day. It was clearly not made by someone who was a driving enthusiast. If I had to decide between 911 or AMG... sorry Mercedes.
Defo Porsche inspired rear ..they are exhaust tips ..I've no idea why they use tip surly the real pipes can incorporate these tips ..? however on cold mornings you can spot cars that have fake twin as the condensation is only on one side lol
Mercedes's fake exhaust system (which seems to be more or less across the whole mercedes range) ensures I will not buy any of their cars until they stop doing this.
Why are a lot of German car reviews you make Thomas with Michigan license plates , no or less taxes ? Just asking . Great looking car BTW , mean , aggressive , very sporty . Love that engine sound, very nice interior too. Super review Thomas , a lot of detail you said there , bye , bye !
The noise you heard at 16:35 is a white noise to close/contract your eardrums so that airbag deployment doesn't hurt them. Mercedes calls it "PRESAFE Sound".
