Not a lot of folks "deserve" an experience like that, but you indeed deserved it for all the good press you've given the model line over the years. I'm really glad they did this for you in return. Memories for a lifetime, no doubt!
You mean constantly pointing out how unreliable & expensive to repair modern Mercedes are? The old sl300 though, that was a lovely piece of craftmanship - this new POS, it'll never make it to 30 years old let alone 60 - hell you won't even be able to buy OEM parts for it in 10 years & you'll be having to refurbish or buy 3rd party knock-off parts. I'm sure it's lovely to drive and a bunch of fun, but it's just like everything MB make now - disposable & abandoned by the company as soon as they can get away with it.
What I really love about Hoovie is the fact that he enjoys and appreciates cars. Too many rich tossers view all the luxury items they have as disposable status symbols, used to show off their wealth. Not to Hoovie, he loves the cars for what they are and he shares his experience with us. He is something that is becoming rare. A lovely, genuine guy. I'd have the old gull-wing any day over the new one
Disagree. He flips cars. Anyone who does this is not someone who has appreciation for cars. Harry's garage is someone who truly loves cars. He keeps vehicles
I agree. Most reviews are all about specs and rich tossers. Seeing the enjoyment of the car without being so materialistic about it is probably the reason I enjoy Hoovie’s vids. This one was good. No problem mixing up the content.
@@hickhunter2303 I argue that’s an ignorant statement imo. Plenty of enthusiasts buy cars and own them for a few months before flipping them. If you want to get experience/own as many cool cars as possible over your lifetime, you won’t get there by keeping everything you buy. Hoovie gets very excited about vehicles, and people just don’t get his dry sense of humor I think.

This is a great episode! I personally would love to see more of this. Maybe you could do a hybrid where you travel around the world, visit amazing places, buy a car, then import it back home. Then have the Wizard/Car Ninja fix it. Take the wife and kid...and the Wizard!

M189 in the 300SL is single Overhead cam. The twincam 6 cilinder came first in the W114 280E with the also awesome M110 engine. Still agree on the sound. Its so good. And later Mercedes models with straight 6’s have the same soundtrack altho little less throaty. For Example W111 230 w108 250-280SE And the W114 models especially carburated cars
"loss of the clutch pedal". That's just preference. I for one, the last time I had that damn thing was in driving school. To most, it's good riddance. Before you even try saying otherwise, try looking at automatic sales vs manual sales. Manual doesn't come even close. In the end of the day, sales is what moves things. The less money there is in manuals, the less models there will be.
300SL with period racing history. Karl Wendlinger as your co-driver. Mrs. Hoovie able to attend and play navigator in the SL. Dude I award you 1 trillion points, you have won the game. PS: The plastic shield is a big/rain/debris deflector. The Mille Miglia, like the Targa Florio was run on open roads. In the 20’s-50’s there were errant farm and wild animals roaming the countryside. The deflector kept big and little things from impacting the windshield. It’s made from heavy, thick plexiglass or perspex with strong supports. The idea was the driver could mow down small animals that crossed their path and the deflector would send the guts over the roof instead into the windshield. It worked surprisingly well and was a common feature on open road race cars of the era.
Dont get too caught up on the views of this video Hoovie! A lot of the time it will be an algorythm thing. I personally love driving videos. You mentioned you dont like how your cars are sitting around i the garage, i would love to see a bi-weekly drive/road trip vlog with some of the cars in your collection. perhaps some in depth reviews (not just troubleshooting and repair videos), but just an idea. I love your currrent content, but i dont want you to get disheartened just because you tried something a little different!

Just watched your latest video, talking about this one. I enjoyed this - you did mangle up mille miglia, but hey it’s not easy 😁. Some track exploits with the GT350H would be pretty entertaining but it you can pick up an original gull wing and use that as it should be… THAT would be entertainment 😉

As a subscriber and follower to you Hoovie since the early days - this was so heartfelt. Thank you for sharing with us, and as a fellow Mercedes fan, I know what you mean. I saw many of these cars and the 722 with Stirling Moss at Goodwood 10 years ago or so, courtesy of Mercedes, the work that Mercedes-Benz Classic put into keeping these cars, driving them, often hard and as they were intended to, is mind-boggling. I hope that they keep on doing it even though the cars get older and astronomically more valuable for each year passing. Cheers buddy!
I bet that cat which came behind the car can run faster than this junk. Let me explain: the car can obviously go very fast, but after driving it for 2 mins 19 sec suddenly you will see an engine management light on your dash and the whole junk will go in 'limp mode'. After wasting 1 hour checking what's wrong, you find out that apparently a fly passed through the grille and hit a sensor, that sensor (being so cheap and unreliable and made up of snow-flakes) is now sending error message to the EMU and thus disabling the entire car. By that time the cat has already won the race! And the name SL means nothing because greedy Mercedes has flooded the market with endless models and letters i.e. CL, CLS, CLK, SL, SLS, SLC, D1CK, VA61NA, VOMIT, Ph.D, LLB... too many silly letters, no one knows which is special and why!
Driving a 300SL is the ultimate dream. Aside from the 500k/540k, that’s the most beautiful car of all time. Cars that are so perfect they take your breath away. For me, the real dream now is to get my 560 running again

What an opportunity to spend that time in Italy with the wife and the overall experience of meeting Karl and forging that kind of relationship with Mercedes/AMG. You can tell Karl is all business, with the only smiles really coming when you pushed on the accelerator and when the patrol officers went flying by. I don't know if I'd rather drive the car, or just watch Karl drive and learn the little nuances of experience. One for the memory books.
Wow, Congrats Hoovie! You know you've made it in the Automotive industry when major manufacturers start inviting you to come drive their newest vehicles and attend special events.
These SCREENS EVERYWHERE are a real turn off! I'm deciding between this an a LC500 and although the Merc has a gorgeous design outside, I simply can't invest in a car which have screens which will be outdated in 4 years! Screw that!
@Hoovies Garage -- The problem with this video wasn't the content, it was the title. I'm going to be blunt: I don't care about the new SLs and I barely care about Mercedes as a modern brand because like so many luxury brands, they're disposable eye candy cars with too much stimuli, designed to last for 5 years and then retire as a cost prohibitive brick. Maybe Merc is turning the SL beat around but in recent history, SLs have become over-priced SLKs that appeal to 60-somethings with more money than brains. I haven't liked what the brand has done with their styling since the late 90s and like you, I miss what luxury used to be, not what it has become. If you would have hinted you were going to compare the new SL with the old, I might have cared to click.

great Video but I must say the new sl is everything I hate about new cars with all its displays, non tactile buttons, mini screens on the steering wheel etc. all that really doesn't get me and probably never will
Those Mazda-inspired headlights are such a downgrade for the car, IMO. Mercedes is going in a direction that is an aesthetic downgrade. They did the same thing for the new S-Class, the entire exterior just looks cheaper and less stately than its predecessor.

Forget all about the v8 dual turbo. The sound when you let the old straight 6 in 300sl breathe, even if just a little tickling of its full register makes the whole thing worth watching!

Having done sparkplugs on a 14 e350. And having to pull the entire ecm/pcm to do it. I question why anyone spends the money on something designed against being serviced by the user so badly. Its one thing to have a cramped bay because of a massive engine. Its another when you start tossing things in the way with no reason
