I bought just for the size, I’m sure people don’t come around and watch this anymore but I love the small form factor/size of old paperwhites it’s perfect for taking every where!
There ads on the roads, there are ads in your hotel room, there are ads on the beach, there are ads in the elevator, there are ads on your personal phone UI, there ads on social media, there ads in your dreams, now there are ads on Kindle too. I foresee a day when publishers will find a way to put ads in paper books as well.
I can't tell if the last part is satire??? Because have you seen Paper books? Like the inside cover or back last page. They are always advertising other books by the author.
Thank you very much for this review. I bought a paperwhite kindle in 2017 and the 2022 basic kindle looks exactly like it. The only differences seem to be charging time (I swear I could spend months and months without charging my kindle the first 5 years) and the raised edges are a bit larger on the sides and at the top, and smaller at the bottom. And the micro usb of course. My kindle really is my prized possession.
This is perfect. I have one from 2007 and I am so glad to see that this one is pretty close. I love my 2007 but they won’t download to it anymore 😢. Great and perfect review!
I was planning on getting the Paperwhite, but I didn't want to shell out the extra cash for a 16gb model. Close to $200 for only 16gb of storage (even though it's MORE THAN PLENTY) I think all e-readers/kindles should just have a base storage of 16gb (since they don't use a micro SD card slot) and then the slightly higher priced variants with 32gb+. That being said, I ended up canceling my order on the Paperwhite after seeing this video. Not sure if it has 8gb of storage or 16, but for the cheaper price and smaller form factor, I'd say this is good until Amazon comes out with the "Color".
Also, definitely will check out your books once I get the Kindle. Sadly, with the new updates(?) I can't download it directly from my phone to my current tablet I use 💀
Got this for Christmas. Brilliant! My original keyboard model finally expired after 15 years! Rip for battery life: Turn off the WiFi if you done need it. Doubles the life! Happy reading everyone.
As usual a great video but I don't think you quite understand eInk displays. They are reflective so you don't need the backlight in sunlight only at night when there is no ambient light, also the only Paperwhite that has a light sensor is the Signature Edition.
There is no kindle with backlight. The frontlight is used in very bright areas. You reduce the light in darker environment. The kindle even tells you this when you first use the settings of the frontlight.
@@Desert371 Thank you for this information. The reason i bought my 4th gen Kindle back in the day was because there was no eye straining backlight. Now i know i can upgrade without worrying about backlight.
Why would you have the brightness on maximum in the sunlight? Its an E-ink display. The whole point is that its completely visible under bright conditions without the backlight.
I ordered it two days ago despite owning PocketBoook InkPad Color (7.8) .. Kindle has the best dictionaries including Oxford Advanced dictionary which makes it a great choice for me ..
Great video as always. Just wondering on yours or peoples thoughts on the following: Getting a Paperwhite 10th (2018) for around 50-60 quid second hand Vs this 2022 basic Kindle. The new kindle actually looks really good and in the above it boils down to (I think) the flush screen and waterproofing and how important this is to you
I bought a paperwhite in 2018 and is time to replace it. This model is perfect for my needs with better screen and same size with the old one. Thanks for review!
For comics, panel by panel is a better experience when you aren't using paper. On a phone, it is nicer to scroll each panel than zooming in or squinting.
Amazon needs to do something with the web browser. Many hotels and airports require the use of the web browser to log in their Wifi network, and that becomes difficult if the web browser does not support the necessary basic requirements to log in, such as simply selecting a check box to agree to the terms and conditions for that particular WiFi network. Amazon needs to think about these things when programming the web browser. I have the Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition, and I have that issue with the web browser pretty often when I travel.
@@LaForjaEspiritual No. It is just convenient for a $250 device to have working public access Internet. Also, I have an issue with both the Oasis and the Paperwhite Signature Edition not accessing the Kindle Store after the last update. I might have to reset both devices.
Pity that one has to pay extra for the power plug I have 5 kindles, each for a different language, and a paperwhite, the last one is ok. Still prefer my fire kindles, and the tablet. Being an avid reader in 5 languages, I need all . The older kindles have limited space. Pity some don't get updated. I also bought 1 e reader from Barnes and Noble because many ebooks books sold in Amazon in other countries are not sold in the USA, and one can't buy from an Amazon in the UK, Spain ,etc. I am looking forward to getting it delivered today.
Does Canadian Amazon Prime get you access to the kindle books or its a separate membership? Thank you for this review. Its very detailed and mega helpful!!!
Hey I'm Canadian also. Prime doesn't get you access to books for free if thats what you're asking, you either need to pay for the kindle subscription service in which case you don't need a kindle device and can download books on any device, or buy the books from the kindle store.
If 'enjoyment of use', was what matters to me the most at the moment, when picking an ideal e-book reader, I'd blindly pick what you adviced me to pick... just an opinion of a stoned man seing your channel for the first time. You're doing your s#!t perfect sir! Peace!
Hey Chris love the review. Just reading the comments and someone keeps replying to comments as you asking them to private chat them. If this is you cool, however if not thought I would let you know. Keep up the awesome reviews
I dislike the shorter charge capacity as I read for 6 or more hours straight . But the new kindle is a fantastic reading experience as ajustable larger fonts are comfortable for my 50 yr old eyes. The Kindle is lighter and more ergonomic than a book not to mention I often read a few books similtaniously and it's a liibrary not just one book.
off topic but I always get jealous when I hear the “fits in a pocket” claim about e-readers. only men would say this because pockets in womenswear are barely big enough to fit a standard sized phone. we are getting sooo scammed in the pockets department and I’m tired of it
I notice that after using the dictionary (by holding on the word), the display starts to have some "ink" reflection on the white area, it's hard to descibe, but it quite similar to a real paper inside a book, you can see the content of the page behind
nice video. I almost buy it as Amazon kindles are looking alike between versions, even not to mention about other countries' version. The only advantage of this version is low price.
I bought the 2015 kindle paperwhite refurbished and micro-usb aside, its been great! If you want an ereader on a budget, you can pick one up for less than 30usd
I wish I felt the need for this. But do you really need to carry hundreds of books with you in your pocket? Idk about you, but when I travel, I typically take just one book with me. Physical books are just unbeatable.
Nearly every Kindle, with the exception of the Oasis model, has been out of stock on Amazon India since March 2024. Strangely, there's been no news coverage or announcements regarding this situation. is it possible that Kindles are being phased out of the Indian market? Could you please investigate further and provide any relevant updates or news on this matter?
I agree. I've been looking for one. There's only like 3 brands that can get the Google play store. I found a boox poke 4 lite comparable to this, or maybe a meebook but I'm unsure of the reliability or continued support of these. So at this time I've decided to just get a Kindle. I discovered you can just share an epub with the Kindle app and it's immediately in your library so that makes it easier for me.
@@bencenagy4737 I haven't done it myself but I'm 99% sure you can. I rent books digitally from my library, and they have an option to download the file in kindle format to upload to your device from the PC
Chris, you've been repeating this mistake on every Kindle review. On bright ambient light you don't need the screen frontlight on! It's the opposite of LCD and OLED displays. eInk screens behave like paper.
It is not a mistake. He is right. Read Amazons description. The light should be turned on in bright environments. It doesn‘t make that much difference in sunlight (but it makes the screen appear more white) but it is very helpful in rooms with bright artificial lights. The frontlight reduces the glare. The darker a room gets, the less light you need on your screen (if any). The kindle tells you this when you adjust the light the first time.
Hi amazing video. But why is it available only in US. I want to buy it here in India but showing unavailable. When will it be available in other countries?
Very pleased with product. Not sure how to turn off Wifi or if I need to. It downloaded my purchase even though Aoroplane mode is off. Also opens automatically when I open cover. Is that right or am I not turning it off properly.
It may seem a little counterintuitive, but turning Aeroplane mode "On" will stop using wifi and extend your battery life (as it uses less power). Doing so does mean that if you buy a new e-book, it won't automatically download... that's the downside. Personally, I tend to buy e-books in batches, so I have Aeroplane mode "On" almost all the time and only turn it "Off" temporarily to sync my books. I hope this clarifies things for you.
6 inches wow why on earth does amazon think we need such a jumbo sized screen reader, honestly i would go as far as to say it's a little too much and they should make it smaller
Hey Chris, what do you think about the Kobo readers? This kindle can only read kindle books, right? No PDF, no ePub support, correct? Also, I've been playing with the very unconventional idea of just getting a tablet, because sometimes I like to read comics in color. Love to hear your view on the matter.
is kobo store (I believe that's how its called) comparable to kindle store? do they also have so many titles and most important - what about prices? are there any deals? im considering buying Clara 2e but I don't know anything about kobo!
In the UK, the Clara 2E costs the same as a Paperwhite (£130). Definitely not in the same price category as the kindle basic (£85). A price difference of about 50%.
@@Wiktoria-br1js The kobo store has just about the same selection and they do a thing where they price match books. It’s not as expansive and lacks a lot of self published kindle books and other obscure titles. For 99% this isn’t a problem but if you’re that 1% that buys books AND they’re obscure then you might want the kindle. You could always buy on the kindle store and side load to a kobo but it’s more work
As soon you buy this, you become a subscriber to amazon services, which is to sell ebooks to you. My question is below: 1. Can I access the Internet via a standard browser? 2. Can I transfer pdf from Laptop to Kindle? 3. If file transfer into Kindle is supported the what are the allowed extentions? Can you please help to clarify?
You can access Wikipedia page and stuff but the web browser is kinda slow in kindle devices. Yes you can transfer pdf and other files from laptop. But the screen of kindle 2022 is small and not ideal for pdf files. Kindle with larger screen might work better for pdf. They support mobi, azw, pdf and you can also side load epub.
If is 16 inch is the same size of my phone and I'm trying to change device because of studying many ours everyday on my phone I'm started getting pain on my wrist. If is the same thing I don't see a reason to buy it 😢☹️
Did y'all know that Kobo released an open version of this 5 years ago that you can actually put your own books on, no matter where you got them from? Same screen size, same resolution. Amazon readers suck lol. Who would buy an e-reader that can't even open EPUB books or any of the other popular formats??
@@charitysketches glad to be of help. The one I'm talking about is the Clara HD, that's the one I have, but all Kobo eReaders are able to read Epub books and all other common formats. The thing about Amazon eReaders, is they don't play so nice with your ebooks. Essentially forcing you to buy books through their store, which you only have access to through their eReaders or the mobile app, essentially locking you into using their service. Now well Kobo has a similar store, they don't lock you into it, you can put your own books on your eReader, legally obtained or otherwise. Personally if I was picking up an e-reader, I'd go for the Clara 2E, same screen as the Clara which is sharp, backlit, and the backlight is colour temperature adjustable. Different being it's faster, waterproof, and if it matters to you charges over USB-C. I'm sure this isn't something the average person would want, but I'm including it anyways because I don't know if you would. You can also listen to audiobooks on it over Bluetooth.
@@LindonSlaght you can use the calibre app to convert any ebooks into a format kindle can read. It's a little more hands on but not much, assuming the books don't have DRM. I believe the newer kindles can read epubs as well or at least accepts them via email to automatically convert. The Clara 2E is a better device but again it costs the same as a Paperwhite in the UK and I'm not sure why people keep comparing the kindle *basic* to it.
