Today on Project GT6, we modify our LS4's intake, remove the body, break down the old drivetrain, and go over some more BIG decisions we need to make!
So far, we have revealed that we are swapping out our old Triumph drivetrain for a 5.3L aluminum LS4 V8 from a 2006 Pontiac GXP, a 2004 Mustang V6 T5 and will be connecting them with a bellhousing from a 1980s Jeep with the AMC 2.5L engine.
Today we'll go over the new differential we will be using and why we're using it!
We're only just getting started, so subscribe so you don't miss anything!

In Regards to your rear suspension, depending on what the actual goal of the car is, you would want some suspension lift under hard acceleration. Back in the old days, Chrysler corporation cars had a device called a "pinion snubber". It was a rubber piece mounted to the nose of the differential. Under hard acceleration, the axle would wrap a predetermined amount, making the snubber come in contact with a reinforced section of the cars floor. This would have the reaction of lifting the car slightly, but at the same time pressing the tires more firmly against the ground. AMC did the same thing with devices it called "Torque Links" and these were bars similar to the Corvette suspension parallel bars that bolted to each side of the differential and provided some lift while quelling axle wrap. Usually found on the hotter cars like AMX's, SC/Rambler, SC/360 and early V8 Gremlins. You might have also seen good old school "slapper bars" on the cheaper stuff like Camaros and Firebirds. Same principal, just goofball execution. Granted, you don't want a ton of lift, but you want some. However I suspect this car will never see the drag strip anyway.

Turn a top hat boss with a blind threaded hole that you can fit from inside the manifold & then bond + screw into from outside with a washer / cap to seal and retain. Have you thought about using subframes from other cars such as Miata, E46 or E36 BMW etc? Simple chassis to pick up necessary points & link the subframes? Another thing to consider is where the exhausts will go as I guess it will not go under the new chassis.

To plug that PVC hole, I would just tap it and run a straight thread o-ring plug into it. Just measure the hole and go to any hydraulics shop and select an appropriately sized plug. Then drill and tap the manifold for the plug and screw it. When it’s done, that is going to be a very cool little car - with quite a bite!

Hope that ls doesn't move the coolant through the plastic intake manifold like a ford modular.
@FanatikBuilds
@FanatikBuilds 3 года назад
Nope, it's a really slick setup! All the coolant is directed through the block to the heads and back again, keeping the intake strictly for air. The front and back of the heads have steam ports which allow for small tubing to carry any possible air bubbles in the coolant back to an expansion tank which prevents hot spots. A very well thought out design! 👍

My standard MK2 gt6 without any lowering is hardly 12cm off the ground so your might not have as much clearance as it appears. The sill (or rocker as i think the Americans call it) is structurally important to the original chassis design. They replaced the herald larger outriggers when the design changed. i would have thought you could somehow tie the new chassis into some reinforced sills without loosing as much ground clearance.
@FanatikBuilds
@FanatikBuilds 4 года назад
We're not too worried about the ground clearance, the new frame only sits about 2.5" closer to the ground than the lowest point of the old setup! Will make more sense in the next episode! Cheers 👍

Go with a thicker walled steel tube that will not hold up to the torque it would if you were going to weld it into the body turning it into a unibody but alone it will only be a death trap
@18robsmith
@18robsmith 4 года назад
3x3 tube will distort far more than 4x2. The asymmetry of the 4x2 gives a better torsional and bend stiffness. several solutions that will improve the situation, first, as Jeremy suggests go with a thicker tube, second, and not quite so obvious is to go with a pair of 3x1 (or 3x1.5) with he same wall thickness as the 3x3 spaced about 0.5 inches apart with a few gusset plates to keep them parallel - this will improve the torsional stiffness dramatically, as well as increasing the bend stiffness somewhat.
@FanatikBuilds
@FanatikBuilds 4 года назад
We're a little further along than it might appear, so unfortunately we'll be sticking with the 3x3 ... But don't worry, it's going to work out alright! Thanks for the heads up!
@jeremygenslinger4874
@jeremygenslinger4874 4 года назад
Had a friend who used that same box tube to build a frame for a stockcar was killed first time out one small crash that shouldn't have hurt anything the car crumpled like a smashed pop can if you continue your nuts and we will probably be seeing you in the next life.
@jeremygenslinger4874
@jeremygenslinger4874 4 года назад
It also had a full roll cage that didn't help a thing and could have made it worse but we will never know now.
@aussiebloke609
@aussiebloke609 4 года назад
Any reason you can't spread the new frame against the rocker panels (or even inside the sills, like Binky's sill stiffening tubes), instead of trying to connect front and rear in a straight line? That should keep your usable floor area at a workable height, give plenty of width to the frame itself, and if needed, you can always bolt on a crossmember to act as a stiffener once the drivetrain is installed.
@FanatikBuilds
@FanatikBuilds 4 года назад
Thanks for the ideas sir! If we did it as a unibody like binky we definitely would have run a tube through the sills - as it sits though we wanted to stay with a body on frame, but we will be heavily integrating the two parts so it will (act) more like a unibody. All will be clearer in episode 12 :) cheers! 👍

A lot of the C4 Community are talking about this. The D36 is not very strong and it can handle not more than 300 HP. That is the absolute limit. However Zip Corvette has a solution. www.zip-corvette.com/84-96-3-73-heavy-duty-dana-36-differential-w-cover.html I am currently looking into this myself.
@FanatikBuilds
@FanatikBuilds 4 года назад
Thanks Adam, I've seen that product! We just picked up a Tig welder and may try to mimic the design at a point ... From what I understand though, the 36 mostly doesn't like launches on the dragstrip. Us, with street tires and a light car will hopefully be ok. Worst case, everything is a direct bolt in to upgrade to a 44 diff someday! Cheers 👍

@@FanatikBuilds Could you potentially do a 2x3 (possible thicker wall) tubing on the outer rails to gain some ground clearance over the 3x3? I see 2x3 used a lot on body dropped mini trucks. Might gain you an inch without having to encroach on the floor pan.
@FanatikBuilds
@FanatikBuilds 4 года назад
Good suggestion, we're actually quite a bit further along than it seems so it's already built in 3x3, but we've taken a few extra steps to minimize the size and keep it strong. Only lost 2.5" of clearance and the car had tons to begin with so we're pretty pleased! 👍 cheers!
